4.3 out of 5 stars 1,016 ratings

Four desperate men. One dangerous gamble. No easy outcome.
When PI Evan Buckley wins a free trip for two to an exclusive luxury hotel buried in the mountains of upstate New York, a well-earned rest should be guaranteed. But when an armed gang on the run from a botched robbery that left a man dead invade the hotel and take Evan’s partner Gina hostage along with the other guests and their spirited seven-year-old daughter, Evan’s got his work cut out.
As the armed men become increasingly desperate and more violent, one of them develops an unhealthy obsession with Gina. Cut off from help, Evan will do anything to save her and the other hostages, but his daring plan could get them all killed if she fails to play her perilous and crucial role.
And as if that wasn’t enough, the old hotel has got a few shameful secrets of its own. Only one thing’s for sure - there ain’t no such thing as free.

Fast paced action. A little of the timing seems coincidental, but after all it is a short story. Evan is hard to describe; a little bit Jack Reacher and a few others.
Perfect mind candy as I lay in this hospital bed after surgery to fix a broken ankle.

This stand-alone novella is easy to follow. No editing errors or drag-you-down drama. There is gratuitous violence. Not all questions are answered.

The storyline is almost a plug and play. There is descriptive writing that draws the reader into each scene. N The gang of thieves has a low IQ sexual psycho in the group? Believable dialogue and characters with distinct personalities.

'Behind Todd, Mason squared up to Sonny. He was a lot older, in his mid-forties, and getting heavy around the middle, but he carried himself with the same kind of quiet violence you see in grizzly bears.'

    'We the unwilling
    Led by the unqualified
    To kill the unfortunate
    Die for the ungrateful'

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

No Rest For The Wicked: An Evan Buckley Short Story (Evan Buckley Thrillers Book 4) The New Even Buckley Story: No Rest for the Wicked is based on the principle that if something seems too good to be true then it usually is. Evan unexpectedly wins a ‘free all-expense paid weekend” to a high end mountain resort in upstate New York. The too- good- to- be- true- part is that the resort is open with a minimum staff and armed robbers have overtaken the resort. No rest for the Wicked is well written and keeps the reader involved in the action. I received an ARC [Advanced Readers Copy] of the book from Mr. Harper. I have read all of the books written by James Harper and this one is as good as all of the other ones. I purchased this one [crazy I know when I've read it for free] because I like to reread certain books and to have them in my home library. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fast paced book.

I love the Evan Buckley series. Each book is better than the previous. His character is well done without any unbelievable superhero nonsense. He has the right mix of toughness, male thick-headless and emotion to make you wish all men were like him. I especially enjoyed this story with the setting in the woods near Lake Placid. I look forward to seeing his relationship with Gina progress. She is a strong woman and I think more interesting than the police detective, Kate.

Loved this book. It diverts from previous books in the series and the main storyline. Action, action, action. The only thing I did not like about this book is that it is too short. And development of new characters was not well done.

Very poor compared to first 3 books. Too short, unlikely story that seemed lifted from old school slasher films or even Deliverance. I loved the first 3, looking forward to book 5!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book in the Evan Buckley Series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2018
I received an ARC of this book from the author for an honest review. I am already a fan of Evan Buckley and his trials and tribulations. I thought that perhaps he might be able to enjoy his well earned R & R with Gina at a hotel break he had won in a competition. Alas it was not to be..... Both Evan and Gina turn up at the hotel to find out that they along with two other couples have been invited to a taster weekend break. As it turns out only two of the winning couples turn up and much to the manager Luca's annoyance, the other couple have brought their seven year old daughter who is full of energy. So as the weekend starts off, disaster looms in the shape and form of four criminals who are seeking refuge at the hotel after a botched robbery on a liquor warehouse. As they arrive at the hotel and take their hostages. Evan is out in the woods for his morning practice of tai chi unaware of the dilemma unfolding. And so the quiet weekend slips into oblivion as Evan works to rescue the hostages. Another great book about Evan, the author keeping you on edge until the exciting ending.

I have enjoyed all of James Harpers stories and No Rest for the Wicked lived up to my expectations. I really like the character of Evan Buckley, including his sense of humour. Mr. Harper brings it all to life and if you like thrills, action and suspense, with laughs and love thrown in....you’ll not be disappointed with his books!
