No Vacation From Murder (Pollard & Toye Investigations Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 335 ratings

Another thrilling mystery for Pollard & Toye to solve! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, M C Beaton, Sophie Hannah and Faith Martin.

Someone in the village is lying…

The summer letting of exclusive St Julitta’s School to Horner’s Holidays has caused a rift between the governors of the school. The money was welcome, but they didn’t want any old ‘riffraff’ contaminating their public image.

But when a girl’s body is found just outside the grounds, more than just their reputation is at stake.

It is soon clear that one of the residents must be the killer.

With his aunt being one of the school governors,
Detective Superintendent Pollard is called in to help, along with his partner, Detective Sergeant Toye.

Is someone from Horner’s Holidays involved? Can they narrow down the suspects?

For the two inspectors, there is No Vacation From Murder…

No Vacation From Murder is the sixth cosy village mystery in the Pollard & Toye crime series: an intriguing police procedural set in rural England.

This is one of my favorite of Lemarchand's books. A babysitter disappears from a beautiful house on the sea. But get the hardback with the map in the front which makes reading it much more fun.

Another wonderful read in this series.
These first books have fun reading and looking forward to more books in the series.
Maybe the prices of on going books in series, may be just a little high.

I am glad that I have found Elizabeth Lemarchand to read

The protagonists are most appealing, the detectives engaging and credible, the setting interesting, and the plot realistic. We are not fairly prepared for the solution, but it is tidy.

The mysteries of Elizabeth Lemarchand are utterly charming. Excellent character development and a detailed sense of place adds much to well thought out and plausible plot lines. I have loved these books for years.

Truly tedious. Very repetitive and too many characters. I had to review who was who constantly. A waste of time. Earlier books were more enjoyable.

Slightly different from the previous novels in the series. Well written and the lead characters are firmly set and fleshed out.

An easy-to-read entry in the series with two decent, intelligent investigators who deal with the death of a young woman in an English coastal town hosting a nature convention at a school empty for the summer.

I appreciate these books with maps of the area, and although you could infer from directions ("turned left on the Biddle Bay Road") where some locales were, I thought more places could have been added to the map. (I know, a little nit-picky).

P.S. Don't let the fact that this is Book 6 in the series deter you: these's no real background plot through the series you need to be aware of to enjoy each entry.

A superbly entertaining murder mystery, in the classic style. As ever in this delightful series, featured are Det Sup Pollard and recently promoted DI Toye who painstakingly follow all the twists and turns to solve the crime.

Over all a very interesting plot and characters. I did think, though, that the board meeting in progress at the beginning of Ch 1 introduces a lot of names at once, hard to sort and remember.
If ever the book is redone, Chapter 1 could be condensed into a few bits of back story and the book started on the second chapter.

At first my heart sank a bit when I saw this book was another set in a private school in ...clearly Devon/Cornwall. However all the action takes place in the summer holidays so at least we don't have to wade through the shortcomings of staff members . !!

The partnership of Pollard and Toye moves along very easily. There are clearly no issues at all with regards to manpower shortages. In many respects large chunks of the book could have been set in the 1930's...women swoon when they see a reasonable man and there is no shortage of domestic help . Even Pollard has an au pair to help in his Wimbledon house.

However ,look beneath the surface and there is some very good plotting going on . The interrogations do have real bite and lest anyone thinks this is a " cosy " ( ugh ) book ,the murdered girl meets a terrible end after a pretty dire life .
There are some knowing references to Croft's 1939 Fatal Venture and I find it is these little details which give a well written book further interest.

A nursery nurse is missing when the parents and grandparent return home, she is eventually found in a cave dead and has been strangled. The local police call in Scotland Yard and Chief Superintendent Pollard and Inspector Toye are sent to investigate. Follow the investigation to its climax, a thoroughly entertaining read.
