THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY.Beth Murray was a prostitute who worked on the streets of Manchester,UK back in the early noughties, a destiny that seemed to have been written from a very early age. When Beth was a mere seven years old her beloved father passed away, a tragic event that would quickly and adversely change Beth's whole life. Her mother Karen, devastated by the loss of her husband, became tormented by depression and developed a spurious yearning to replace the love that had been taken away from her so abruptly. Thus, less than a year later, Karen married Ray and gained a new husband whilst an 8 year old Beth gained a step-father. Unfortunately, Ray's only display of support and love towards his newly acquired step-daughter was to abuse her on a regular basis. When his abominable behaviour was eventually discovered, Ray committed suicide before his case even got to trial. This resulted in Karen not only brandishing Beth a liar and blaming her for Ray's death but later abandoning her duties as a mother completely and leaving her daughter to the devices of the social services ... Beth was 11yrs old when she first went into care.By the time she was just seventeen years old, Beth was working as a prostitute, lured onto the dark side of life by the beguilement and unscrupulous cunning of a hapless drug dealer-turned-user, Darren Taylor. At twenty-three years of age, she had little to look forward to in her life, sitting in a deep rut that to her, seemed positively inescapable. Despite that sense of dire inevitability however, Beth always held on to the belief that things would get better, that one day there might just be a fairy tale outcome to her miserable existence. An impossible fantasy perhaps but whilst she had been stripped of many hopes and dreams throughout her life, this was one dream that nobody could take from her.Douglas Mann was a respectable head teacher and family man living in a respectable superb of Manchester. For all intents and purposes, he had it all. But the truth of the matter was, Douglas was incredibly bored with his lot.Spurred on by a dubious seed of alternative excitement sown by a close friend, Douglas found himself parked on a particular back street of Manchester that, after dark, played host to an array of sex workers, drug dealers and other shady miscreants of society. It was here that he first saw Beth. It was here that Beth first approached Douglas' car and asked if he was looking for business and it was here that the merciless collapse of Douglas' respectable status began. As a result of that one evening of inexplicable madness, that one decision to search for something a little more thrilling than his own version of a rut, Douglas lost his liberty (arrested for kerb-crawling) his driving licence (charged with drink driving the same night) his marriage, his family and his job. In short, Douglas Mann lost everything and found himself exposed to a harsh reality that he only believed existed in fictional TV dramas. Now, some might say that the man got exactly what he deserved whilst others might view it as an overly severe consequence to a stupid mistake. But regardless of public opinion, the one thing that nobody could ever have predicted, was the unimaginable relationship that subsequently formed between Douglas and Beth after that first encounter.Understandably, one might question the morality of any such relationship (he being twice her age, she being a prostitute etc) or one might wonder perhaps, if such an incredulous event could or actually did take place? However, despite your initial muse, I feel that the question here shouldn't actually be about morality or truth of the matter, the pertinent question in this fact based scenario should be this:Did Beth Murray, having borne such an insufferable life, eventually find the fairy tale ending that she so longed for?NOBODY HEARD ME CRY ... a novel based on actual events ... will answer that question for you!

P.A.Davies was born in Manchester, UK, a city he has lived in and around all his life. He loves Manchester and is proud to be part of the multi-cultural, modern city that houses two Premiership football teams and is the birthplace of many a famous band, such as Oasis, the Stone Roses, Take That and Simply Red.

For most of his life, he has dabbled with writing various pieces - from poems to short fictional stories - but this was always just for fun. However, following advice from a good friend he decided to have a go at writing a novel. Thus, his first novel ‘Letterbox’ was conceived, a fictional take on the infamous IRA bombing of Manchester in 1996. It took him over a year to complete but while doing so, he found it to be one of the most satisfying and interesting paths he had ever followed. It came as no surprise that the writing bug subsequently became firmly embedded within him.

P.A.Davies’ second book - George: A gentleman of the road - was published in May 2013 and is a true story about one of Manchester’s homeless. His third novel - The Good in Mister Philips - is an erotic novel (arguably set to rival Fifty Shades…!) and his fourth - Nobody Heard Me Cry (Dec. 2015) - is again a fact-based tale about Manchester’s darker side. The thriller ‘Absolution’ (Oct. 2017) is his fifth novel.

To label P.A.Davies’ writings would be difficult because his works range from thrillers to touching novels to true-to-life tales embedded in a captivating story, making P.A.Davies an imaginative and versatile storyteller.

An impressive, touching and heartbreaking story, based on true events and characters. Set in Manchester, this is Beth’s life story, a young woman who, despite seeing the dark side of life, manages to keep an undaunted spirit whilst staying true to herself.

This novel is based on true events and characters, although, for the purpose of this story, embedded in the author’s tale. I shudder to think what Beth lived through and how she had no one to turn to. Nobody heard her cry – nobody came to her rescue. She had to go through it all by herself and to live through all that and still keep faith in mankind, staying true to herself and loyal to her friends .. remarkable and touching. Just one more thing: I loved seeing George (George, a Gentleman of the Road, P.A. Davies, 2013) appear in a few scenes and was glad Beth had made his acquaintance, considered him a friend.

P.A. Davies harrowing novel deals with the fascinating topic of how you are influenced by what you experienced growing up and how it takes a strong character not to copy the (sometimes only) examples they know but follow their independent moral compass. How can personal responsibility apply when you have no idea, have never been taught, right from wrong? I find the topic of nature and nurture very intriguing and it shows the skill of the author that he does not just portray the ‘bad guy/woman’, but also gives us insight into how they became who they are. There are no black and whites, only shades of grey and, although it is very easy to judge others, we have no idea what makes others behave and act the way they do. This is what the author is showing us – there are no characteristic types in his novel but real-life people, each with their own, often tragic, story.

I loved the character of Beth, she is such a plucky girl who has seen the darkest side of mankind. Most remarkably, despite everything, she stays true to herself, almost never gives up her positiveness or looses her inner strength. I felt for her and could not help wondering why mankind can act so horribly, why children are not protected in our society. Not enough, anyway. In Nobody Heard Me Cry, the author is the narrator who uses a dark sarcasm to shine his light on everything that happens; it is his voice we hear in the description of the events we are witness to. This gives a certain edge to the story and, although I always like to form my own opinion, I must say that this made for an entertaining read, made me chuckle in spite of the feelings of anger, sadness and grief I experienced. The ending is so poignant, it is simply beautiful and makes you close the book with a wistful smile.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A STORY! WHAT A WRITER!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 20, 2016
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Truth IS definitely stranger than fiction. I started reading this book with great trepidation - due to the subject matter - and after the first couple of chapters I doubted that I would be able to complete all 564 pages, not because it isn't brilliantly written but because of the number of F words in there! But, as with the last book I read by this author, I soon found myself organising my day around the book in order to make sure I had time to read at least a couple of chapters. It's not a pretty story, that much is true but it delves deeply into the darker side of human nature and even has you empathising - at times - with some of the nastiest characters. In fact it actually shows some of life's worst characters from a different perspective by telling their back stories which helps you to understand - but not condone - their behaviour.

Every single chapter leaves you wanting to know more. Other reviewers have said that this authour is 'one to watch' and I completely agree. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see his books made into films. Whenever you read one of his books you are left feeling that you know the characters, he is such a descriptive writer. As for the ending of the book, well I didn't see it coming for one minute and he leaves it until the last page to reveal the answer to one of the 'mysteries' that he introduced early in the book. He is very skilled at keeping you on the edge of your seat!

There is also a very tender love story which builds throughout the book and although the two characters are a complete mismatch you find yourself willing them to have a happy ending.

Like one of the characters in the book, I don't like 'gutter language' and the book is littered with it so I surprise myself when I say This is one of the best books I've ever read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes 'Gritty' true life stories.

Superb book, brilliantly written! The detailed descriptions of the characters and places throughout the story are so imaginable, you get drawn in from the very beginning and as like the rest of P A Davies novels, impossible to put down!
