Nothing New Under the Sun: An Archaeological Thriller Where Ancient Secrets and Deadly Conspiracies Collide (A Carter Devereux Mystery Thriller Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 861 ratings

What if everything we know about history is wrong?

Archaeologist Carter Devereux's research leads him to an unsettling conclusion: our ancestors may have been far more advanced than we ever imagined.

Following an ancient trail across South America, India and the Middle East, he uncovers evidence of prehistoric civilizations with technologies that rival—or even surpass—our own.

Most disturbing are the texts that describe nuclear devastation thousands of years ago. As Carter races to uncover these ancient weapons, he finds himself caught between powerful forces who would kill to possess such artifacts. His discoveries challenge everything we thought we knew about human history, but they might also hold the key to humanity's future—or its destruction.

Nothing New Under the Sun is the first book in J.C. Ryan's Carter Devereux Mystery Thriller series, blending archaeological adventure with a race against time to prevent history's deadliest weapons from falling into the wrong hands.

Kindle Customer M A N - Anticipating. I found this novel because it was about searching for the past. I enjoy trips into the past times. I do admit to being lost in some of the narration, but I don't claim to have any kind of a, scientific mind. I will assume that the given. Info is reasonable, so Y look forward to Dee what future mayhem Carter can fall into.

Amazon Customer - One of my favorite authors. Over the past 2 years JC Ryan has become my one of my favorite authors. Nothing New Under The Sun is the first book in JC Ryan's new Carter Devereux series. A fascinating read about an alternative history to the origins of the human species. It is obvious that a lot of research went into this book and certainly is a captivating page turner.

K. Jones Amazon Reviewer - Great story! This is going to be another great series! I was very excited to read the first book in JC Ryan's new series! Since this is an archeological mystery, I was concerned that I would see the same type of characters as those that appear in the Rossler Foundation Mysteries. I was happy to discover that these are entirely new and different characters, and that this story doesn't have 'counter-parts' to the Rossler Foundation series.

'Nothing New Under The Sun' is the first book in the new series, and lays the foundation for the series. As such, the first few chapters have a lot of information in them that tested my patience a little, but I figured there was a reason he put it in there, and kept reading, and I was right. Once the foundation was laid, the book picked up speed and I became intrigued. The more I read, the more captivated I became with the story and it was hard to put book the book down.

The main characters are likeable and engaging, the plot mystifying, and the subject matter thought provoking. The facts of the book are well researched, and the fiction of the book is imaginative. I believe this is going to be another great series by JC Ryan!

Without giving away anything, I will say that the first book is continued in the second book, 'The Wolves of Freydis'. I am glad they were released together, because at the end of the "Nothing New Under The Sun"

OldArcher Amazon Reviewer - Get out your well-worn fedora, jacket with many pockets, brushes and dentist tools, and prepare for adventure... WOW!!! J.C. Ryan has eclipsed all of my other favorites-period... As a kid, I read books on archeology expeditions around the world, back in the days before WW II. It truly was a different world then, with adventure and intrigue abounding. Mr. Ryan has captured that feeling, taking from the headlines of today, blending real world events and giving his writing a legitimacy that few writers of fiction, any fiction, can equal... It's as if the late Richard Halliburton had met the heroes of Clive Cussler, and Carter Devereux steps off of the page... Indiana Jones is fun and flashy, but Devereux is more "real." Character development, pace, authenticity, dialog, and written for all audiences...

Mr. Ryan doesn't use gratuitous sex, profanity, or violence in his writing. His talents and quality of writing preclude such crutches. Like the late Louis L'Amour, what isn't necessary to telling a story, isn't included. Mr. Ryan's encyclopedic knowledge encompasses many areas of interest.I affirm, that nobody could possibly be bored, for there is more than enough,to satiate any reader of what Heinlein coined, "speculative fiction."I hope and pray that Mr. Ryan will continue to write as much, as often, and as quickly as possible. His work is amongst my greatest joys...

Think of it as special as a snifter of Grand Marnier, a cup of the finest coffee or tea, the ambience of a study with a merry fire in the fireplace, and you have the new Carter Devereux Mysteries... Enjoy, and like me, await his new works, with bated breath...

Do I endorse Mr. Ryan's works, especially the Carter Devereux Mysteries, Absolutely! Five out of Five Stars!!!

This is a good book. JC Ryan is steadily improving his writing. At least that's how I feel.
The plot is very well built, the characters well formed and the background idea (elders that commanded technology to a high degree) really thrilling. The author has conducted an extensive research on the concepts he is basing his work upon. This is an added bonus, I could not stop checking the internet to review related information just to find there is a whole lot of facts supporting it.
He has kept romance at check (how Mackie and Carter meet is a funny story in itself and I did not find that annoying at all) while on some earlier books this was a problem.
There are two sentences in Spanish which unfortunately are not properly knitted. As a native speaking boy I would recommend the author a better Spanish consultant for the next ventures.
Being a Catalan I was happily surprised by a reference to "Catalan Conquistadores" which although being nice it probably is not faithful with what really happened in those ancient times.
It's a pity the story has a "cliffhanger" at the end. This will surely be resolved on the next book. I understand this as a common problem when you have to split a book due to its extension. Good news as this means the author will hopefully keep delighting us.

To summarise, this is a very entertaining book which I strongly recommend. Four and a half stars which, as this reviewing tool has no decimal possibilities get rounded to five.

Carter Devereux is an archeologist, and the more he studies the history of humanity, the more he’s convinced that ancient, more advanced civilizations once lived on the earth. Worse, he’s convinced that these people had knowledge of, and used, nuclear weapons. As evidence mounts that his suspicions are correct, the government calls upon him to find these ancient weapons of mass destruction before they fall into the wrong hands. Unknown to him, just such a pair of wrong hands is following his every move and trying to get one step ahead. The question is; can he succeed before those who would use these weapons to destroy civilization as we know it?
There is Nothing New Under the Sun by J.C. Ryan is a relatively well-written, tense thriller that, but for the fact that it ends with too many issues unresolved, would be a great read. The author has a masterful way with words, despite a tendency to stop the narrative flow to dump tons of historical and archeological information on the reader. To the author’s credit, this information is informative and interestingly written.
I am, unfortunately only able to give this book three and a half stars, though, because of the aforementioned (to me, at least) weaknesses.

Nothing New Under The Sun is the first book in JC Ryan's new Carter Devereux series. A fascinating read about an alternative history to the origins of the human species. It is obvious that a lot of research went into this book and certainly is a captivating page turner.

Initially I thought the book was slow and lacked suspense and action but then I realized it is the the first book and sets the background for the rest of the series. Once I got over that I sat back and really enjoyed the read.

I was disappointed when the book ended on a massive cliffhanger - I hate cliffhangers, but Ryan must have read my mind and published the sequel, The Wolves of Freydis, at the same time as this book.

I am already 1/3 of the way through the sequel - The Wolves of Freydis - and I find I just can't put it down.

All in all the first 2 books in the Carter Devereux series are on par with Ryan's Rossler Foundation and I am looking forward to read the rest of this series.

<Spoiler Alert - plot elements will be discussed> I am admittedly undecided about this book. I found the background story very enveloping, and the archaeological mysteries and alternative theories of Human history to be especially though-provoking. But it all got lost in the story pace and style, and the characters. In sum, everything is too perfect. The hero is too perfect - tall, handsome, intelligent with perfect memory recall, speaks many languages, martial arts master, independently wealthy, never fails to find the lost archaeological wonder lost for centuries, etc. The retreat in the Canadian woods is also perfect and idyllic. The hero meets the perfect woman who is intelligent, beautiful, bears him a son, and is able to commune with wild animals with her thoughts. The hero always flies to the idyllic ranch in Canada in his own private plane, and sometimes commutes to his archaeological job when the mood strikes. This was another odd feature of the story - the plot is that there may be terrible weapons of mass destruction laying about under the sands of ancient lost cities, and if evil people (terrorists) were to find them, it could spell the doom of all mankind. But there is no sense of urgency to discover the weapons or stop the enemy. There are often weeks between events, vacations, or side trips of several weeks before any action to deter the enemy is taken. The hero and his brainy wife are both recruited into a secret government organization to thwart enemies of the country, and proceed to fly to their ranch retreat for a few weeks, then back to the city for meetings, then back to the ranch - and so on. While there are some interesting discussions and archaeological speculative theories tossed about during these week long time outs, the whole pace of it is unexpected in a plot as dire as the one presented. Near the end of this first book, the perfect hero and his perfect family are on their six week perfect vacation when the cliffhanger ending occurs. We don't know the specifics of what happened, but we do know the animals at the Canadian ranch were upset and howling because of it. A bit too supernatural for me. While this review is a bit unflattering, I am nonetheless intrigued at the archaeological theories and human history speculative theories that were offered. I am as yet undecided if I will pursue the second book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars JC Ryan pulls it off once more!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2016
JC Ryan has done it again! A taut thriller, a knowledgeable archaeological mystery, an experience-based military/Government spooks caper, and
a heartwarming family saga and love story, all rolled into one.
After the successful Rossler Foundation Mysteries Series, JC has pulled off introducing us to new characters that the reader cares about, well-
researched, sensitively written, and packed with information, theories, and conjecture. The book needs to be read in conjunction with its sequel,
'The Wolves of Freydis', and this introduces us to the literary ploy of ending the book on a cliff-hanger. Like many readers I hate this procedure,
but it is a small price to pay in this instance for the details and thrills Ryan provides for us in his denouement in the second of the duo of books, and
he certainly gives value for money in both volumes. On reflection, I truly feel that this series not only equals the best of the early Rossler series, but
in many ways exceeds them. The characters live on in the memory, and obviously provide the potential for future thrills and adventure. Well done,
    Mr. Ryan!

Conspiracy theories, ancient mysteries and a tale of good versus evil. It doesn't matter whether you believe in what the book is about - super intelligent humans from thousands of years ago - or not, it is still a great story. Maybe a little long-winded, but otherwise it's excellent.

This is the first JC Ryan book that I've read and very much look forward to reading the other three in this series. The characters are believable with the storyline developing at a pace that keeps the reader focused on the plot. I would recommend to anyone who has a liking for ancient history blended with fringe archeology and a plot line involving government spooks.

1.0 out of 5 stars complete and utter garbage! Actually there is a mystery
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 2, 2017
No mystery here, complete and utter garbage! Actually there is a mystery; how on earth did I convince myself to read half of this nonsense. This is a feeble attempt to turn Cremo's Forbidden Archeology into an action mystery trying to link together every crackpot theory going. To make matters worse JC Ryan ( sounds like a serious author ) throws in a romantic interlude that my wife ( who considers Mills and Boon to be the source of top romantic novels ) found completely cringe-worthy. I would give this book no stars if I could.
