A Candidate For Murder: 2nd Book in the Old Maids of Mercer Island series Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 393 ratings

Someone is out to kill the detestable Dana Finkle, and she wants Julia to help save her!

Dana Finkle is running for mayor of Mercer Island. When someone tries to kill her, they kill her campaign assistant instead.

Dana wants Julia Applegate’s help in finding the murderer before he hits his mark. But these two women hate each other. When Julia succeeds in getting Dana to drop her mayoral campaign (because who would want Dana as their mayor?) she agrees. As she fights to save her budding romance with Detective Franks, Julia teams up once again with her book club (Yes, Doe, Rudy, and Blair are back!) to solve the crime. All hell breaks loose, however, as the girls almost get arrested, steal Dana's trash, engage in a public food fight, confront the killer on a rainy night in a graveyard as he's trying to bury Dana. But with the help of Julia's dead mother and the resident ghosts, they do whatever it takes to bring the doer of the dastardly deed to justice.

What people are saying about A Candidate for Murder.
"Despite never having written a review before, I felt compelled to stop and share my thoughts about this book. The characters really leap out of the page to me, their humor and development are some of the best that I've ever read. The suspense was exceptionally well-paced, so much so that I found my suspicions flying from one character to the next."

"The characters in the Old Maids of Mercer Island books are just exactly that - characters. They are well developed and described and their antics lead them into endless situations which are funny and on occasion, hazardous."

"The story holds a lot of appeal as all the main gals are just normal women with keen wits and minds. Put them all together and they are a powerhouse."

Join Julia's two Dachshunds, her talking parrot, and the resident ghosts as they once again solve a murder.

Ms. Bohart kills people for fun and profit (on paper, that is).

She holds a master's degree in theater (directing) and has taught both acting and directing. She has been published in “Woman's World” and "Dead on Demand", an anthology of ghost stories that was on the Library Journal Bestsellers List. She also wrote for the Renton Reporter and has taught writing classes through Kent Parks & Recreation and currently through Green River College.

As an avid dog lover and canine rescue advocate, she weaves dogs into all her novels. In fact, they play major roles. "I want the dogs to be realistic, though," she says. "I don't like books that make animals seem like cartoon figures."

Ms. Bohart now has ten paranormal mystery novels on Amazon, along with two short story books, and two nonfiction books. Her most popular series is the Old Maids of Mercer Island. The first book in that series, "Inn Keeping With Murder" remained on Amazon's top ghost story list for over ten months.

She recently launched the NO ALIBI ZONE on her website as a resource for both mystery writers and mystery fans. The No Alibi Zone takes a deep dive into how homicides are investigated. Through her newsletter “Let’s Talk About Murder,” she interviews police officers, mystery writers, forensic technicians, and others who work in the field of murder investigations. She also writes the MURDER BRIEF, which are blog posts on topics like the serial killer gene, the Body Farm, whether eyewitness testimony is reliable, and more.

I totally enjoyed this book. It’s part of a series, but you don’t have to read the books in order. I read book 4 first, then I read this one (book 2).

The story was generally light-hearted but you might be bowled over by all the very tough motivations of some of the characters (sadistic child abuse, spousal abuse, elder abuse). I liked the writing style and very natural dialog. I liked the relationships and nearly every character in the story, except the bad guys/gals. The story revolved around people who are largely in their 60s and their relationships with each other, which I found really charming. The ladies are in good health, competent, confidant, and amusing. They are a group of book club friends who happen to have a talent and curiosity for investigation.

There was an added paranormal element to the story which was cute. I could have done without it, but I acknowledge it added a little zest to the story. I’m not a fan of real-life pets for myself (which would apparently horrify the author), but I enjoyed reading about them in this story (dachshunds, Great Dane, and African gray parrot). The main character claims a dog’s saliva is cleaner than a human’s; that’s not something I believe, but believe what you will.

There was also a lovely budding romance between an almost-retired detective and the main character. It was adult and sweet. Romance is romance whether you’re 15 or 65.

There was no graphic violence, sex, or eff word in this story. There was implied violence.

Nice cozy mystery, and as the owner of the B&B with the help of friendly ghosts, and friends, with all the mayhem and near misses, turns into a pleasant reading story.

Despite never having written a review before, I felt compelled to stop and share my thoughts about this book. The characters really leap out of the page to me, their humor and development are some of the best that I've ever read. The suspense was exceptionally well paced, so much so that I found my suspicions flying from one character to the next. I'd recommend the first of the series prior to this one, however, as it introduces many of the characters from this novel. Meddling neighbors, a bird that mimes movie dialogue, ghosts, and more. 100% buy this book, you'll thouroughly enjoy it.

I loved this story and the wait for the second book in the series was well worth it! The story holds a lot of appeal as all the main gals are just normal women with keen wits and minds. Put them all together and they are a powerhouse. I won't recall the plot, but the case is gripping with a victim you love to hate. If you are new to the series, it has a bit of everything...humor, romance, intrigue and even a few ghosts. But apart from that, it's a good whodunit with a cat of characters all worthy of being guilty. Kept me guessing and I was very wrong about who was behind the murder! To the author.....write faster! I can't wait to see what mischief the ladies get caught up in next!

A light, humorous read!! Lynn Bohart writes well and her work is edited well. The characters in the Old Maids of Mercer Island books are just exactly that - characters. They are well developed and described and their antics lead them into endless situations which are funny and on occasion, hazardous. There are many twists and turns in reaching the end, although the primary villain is suspect from fairly early on. That does not detract from the journey, however, and this is a delightful read on a cold winter's day. There are a few resident ghosts which play into the story but do not overwhelm it. Fun and recommended.

Lynn Bohart’s A CANDIDATE FOR MURDER is book two in the series that began with Inn Keeping With Murder. Book one was a lot of fun so I thought I would give this continuing saga of Julie Applegate and her fellow old maids another whirl. This time around Julia’s friends have convinced her to run for the office of Mayor of Mercer Island but Julia is much more interested in cultivating her promising romance with the local Police Detective.

Her opponent in the race is Dana Finkle, an abrasive woman who enjoys collecting dirt on people and filing law suits. Needless to say Dana is not likely to win a popularity contest but she’s running for Mayor anyway…….that is until someone kills her campaign assistant. It was a case of mistaken identity……they were really after Dana. Now Dana is running scared and enlists the help of Julia and her friends to find out who is trying to “bump her off”. There is no lack of potential suspects so Julia and the gang have their work cut out for them.

In addition to untangling the murder there is also the case of the stolen parrot, not to mention a cadre of guests currently staying at the inn. The odd assortment of personalities includes everything from ghost hunters to a family named Kohl whose young son is not above pranking other guests by pretending to be a ghost. Of course the young prankster and his skeptical father get their just deserts when confronted by the actual ghosts who call the INN home. The ghost of Julia’s mother also makes a most opportune return appearance in this delightful tale of malice and murder.

If during your teen years you, like I, were hooked on the likes of Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton and Trixie Belden it is entirely possible that “grown up you” will find the old maids of Mercer Island equally delightful.

I have read what I think are all Lynn Boharts' novels and my favourites are the Old maids of Mercer Island. They are entertaining, humerous and thoroughly good mystery novels with extremely engaging and likeable characters. I have read all the books several times, and wish she would write some more of their escapades.
