Oath Forger (Book 1): A Sci-fi Romance Kindle Edition
"If you like “no-choice-necessary” stories, meet your next binge-read… Grab this completed bestselling sci-fi series.
“OMG, I think I just found a new favorite series. This one is definitely up there!”
I'm a scavenger. So what? With society's collapse on Earth, I do what I have to for survival. Especially after I'm kidnapped by space pirates. I have no idea why the five most powerful rulers in the universe decide that I'm the Oath Forger, the one foretold to fuse their royal houses together. But I'm going to play along. Because, hey, it's better than probes in uncomfortable places. Now let's just hope they don't find out I'm lying.
Excerpt: Oh God, I'm cracking. The stress of the abduction has done me in. Next, I will be crying in a heap on the floor like Dee. Krek Koah stands, a fierce expression on his face.
The buzz in the room immediately dies. Every single person falls silent. All attention is on him. Without moving his gaze from mine, he says,
"I need this room cleared." Here is where I'm seriously glad for the translator in my neck because if I didn't understand what he said, I would have thought it was 'Off with her head.' And I'm pretty sure I would have peed my pants.
People file for the exits, no questions, no protest. I'm ready to go. I'm backing away already.
“Not you,” Krek Koah pronounces, looking straight at me.
“I loved this book! The world-building was excellent, and the whole premise is very interesting. I’m so intrigued with the story and definitely hooked!”
“A fascinating post-apocalyptic story with an intelligent heroine. Ms. Mars' writing style is fluid, and the pace of her book is fast enough for an easy read, but has just enough depth to the characters so you don't feel it's rushed.”

From the Back Cover
There's no room for fairy tales like romantic love in Ava Smith's life. No, she's spent the past five years keeping her younger sister Lily alive--a demanding job in a world with a sandstorm climate that's continually threatened by alien space pirates who enter Earth's crappy atmosphere and kidnap humans by sucking them up in tractor beams. Ava and Lily live in the tunnels, are governed by comm unit surveys, and survive by scavenging and trading bits and pieces of old Earth culture. Until the day they find a real paper magazine that should buy them food for a month. Yep, good times, happy times until Ava is caught by a space pirate tractor beam--kidnapped.
Koah is a battle-weary warlord, king or Krek of an alliance made up of several hundred planets. There are five alliances, five Kreks - The Five - and they have been at war for a hundred years. Fighting will continue until the Oath Forger arrives to unify The Five through her body, mind, and spirit, and bring peace to the Federation. Koah doesn't doubt the Oath Forger is coming, but he's losing hope she will arrive during his lifetime. Then one day he attends another amazingly boring Zebet meeting of planet counselors to listen to stories told by former pirate captives, and who walks in? The Oath Forger. The Oath Forger!
Sure, Ava is happy to be the Oath Forger, if the pretense frees up The Five and their armies to clear the pirates away from Earth. But sharing her body with five warlords? Not on this scavenger's to-do list. Of course if all five look like Koah, it wouldn't be a completely distasteful chore. Perhaps not even a chore at all.
And sure, Koah is happy to promise Ava he'll rescue her planet from the space pirates. He'd promise the Oath Forger anything because every little thing about this woman attracts him--from her wild red hair to her battered boots, this woman is hot. And of course, peace - yeah, Federation peace.
A new Reverse Harem story from Nia Mars, a writer who might inhale air, but who definitely exhales seduction with every breath and key stroke. A strong story full of action, suspense and world-building detail that brings to life space ships, aliens, Scavengers, Kreks and whole new worlds. Over five books, this funny, clever heroine matches wits against five very different sexy heroes who will steam windows and explode thermometers as they all try to out-do each other seducing Ava, the Oath Forger.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2018OMG I think I just found a new favorite series. This one is definitely up there!
Ava is a great character. She's a caring older sister, a sassy scavenger, and according to the alien king who found her after she was kidnapped by pirates, she is the oath forger. Ava just wants to return to Earth and the sister she left behind, but according to the rest of the galaxy, she is meant to accept five alien kings, stop an ongoing war/feuds between them, and allow them to band together to defeat the pirates targeting the Milky Way. Not wanting to be stranded in space and desperate to return to earth, she plays along, bargaining for her eventual return after meeting with all five men.
Unfortunately for Ava, these guys have no intention of letting her go ;)
This story was such a fun read and I can't wait to see where Ava's adventure will take us.
Bonus: the author finished all five books and is releasing them every week so I don't have to wait months/years to finish this amazing story!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2018I got this free on Kindle. This might be a good series of novellas. Ava Smith has constant internal dialogue, which I normally don't care for, that makes me laugh. This RH first installment has no sex. Ava, thanks to alien space pirates kidnapping her and others, is meeting four of the five rulers that she is expected to accept. Thank goodness Ava is made of stronger stuff. She resists temptation. That might be for the best because they think that she is the Oath Forger and she doesn't believe that she is. Will she do anything to save what's left of Earth and get home to her younger sister?
My problem with this series is that it is actually a serial, one book broken into five parts. Although Nia did not force me to buy the remaining four parts for more than I pay for the majority of the author's I always purchase, wait, yes, she did. How? By ending this with a cliffhanger and writing well enough to make me want to continue the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2018Disclaimer: If you are used to short romance novellas that have a cliffhanger, you will most likely love this novella. Just be sure to go check the release dates of the next two pieces of the story and be sure you are okay with waiting. If you hate cliffhangers and enjoy picky, intellectual dissection of plotlines, read on. If you are just in it for a bit of fun, go buy the book already and enjoy yourself.
Still here? Okay...
I was really, really conflicted about how to rate this book. There were parts where the quality of the writing was amazing, absolutely 5 star, parts that had me engrossed and laughing in delight. And then there were parts that I could barely read because my eyes were rolling so hard, and plot holes that kept me distracted from the story. And then it ended abruptly with no lead up or wind down. The abrupt ending made me want to give this one-star, but the quality of the writing deserved much more than that.
I absolutely hate feeling manipulated by the author. At the same time, I am an author, and I am intimately familiar with the strategy Nia is using to make a living for herself, and there is nothing inherently wrong with it. Everyone deserves to make a living for themselves, and if anyone doesn't like it (like me) they can go buy books elsewhere.
I just wish she had put a disclaimer in the description stating how short it was, a novella really, not a full novel. At least then I could have gone in expecting to only read part of a story and I wouldn't have had such an emotional let down (seriously Nia, go put a disclaimer at the bottom, something as simple as "Part 1 of 3" would be fine, because all the "1" on the cover implies is that there is more to the series, but people expect FULL BOOKS, not fragment 1 of a 3 piece story). I bought the book expecting a full story, and got 1/3 of a story instead.
I refuse to pre-order the next parts, and I won't even think about this again until they are both out, and possibly I won't even buy them then, as the first part dealt with a lot of really great worldbuilding and deep character from the heroine, but it looks like the rest of the story is going to be ridiculous, unrealistic, and eye-roll-worthy sex from a bunch of big alien hunks. Every girl's wet dream, right? Well this girl hopes Nia keeps the writing quality, worldbuilding, and character strong and doesn't fall into the trap of letting dumb sex derail a fascinating plot-line she has set up.
***SPOILERS AGHEAD***
Seriously, Nia, you're writing is great, I LOVE Ava's practical, dry internal voice and focus on survival, plus her loyalty to her sister and her world. I honestly think you shouldn't have written a RH romance, just a straight scifi/dystopian novel that would have been GREAT. The five princes? Absolute cut-out characters as flat as a piece of paper, even Koah (okay, so he's kind and brave, that's nice, but he's attracted to her by instinct or fate or whatever, so those qualities means nothing to the reader. Show us some real character! Struggles and demons he has, choices he has to make that actually COST him something). None of those men deserve to even stand in Ava's shadow, and unless you give them more than one dimension, the romantic relationships will be an insult to the storyline.
(slight plot hole rant)
The biggest plot hole that kept me constantly distracted was Ava's fear that everyone would realize she's just a scavenger and not actually the Oath Forger, AND YET THEN SHE GOES AND TELLS EVERYONE ALL ABOUT HER SCAVENGING LIFE, HER SISTER ALL ALONE, HER MOTHER'S TROUBLES ETC. It is pretty obvious to the reader (at least this is the impression that I get) that being the Oath Forger has nothing to do with species or background, but is randomly picked by...the gods? Smys or whoever, so none of the princes care where she is from, they know she is the Oath Forger because they can FEEL it. And yet if Ava is so worried about being found out, then why is she openly admitting she's a poor nobody who doesn't even know who her father is? If she were really that worried, she should be making up some sort of story to fit the background she thinks she is supposed to have and/or trying to find out more about who the Oath Forger is so she knows who to pretend to be. Everything else about Ava is great, I love her personality, but this one thing seems completely out of character and makes her seem rather dumb compared to all the other clever things she is doing.
There are a few other places where the things happening are just too convenient and easy for the MC, but hey, this is the romance genre, and the story is already much deeper and better written then I've come to expect in romance novels, so good on you Nia.
Good luck, and keep writing!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025This was a fun enjoyable read. The main character isn’t in your face. Instead she’s a logical woman who is looking out for herself in the safest way possible, just trying to use the situation to get back to her sister on Earth. I admired that about her. She had brains and used them.
The men in the book are all a bit too lovestuck for my liking but I enjoyed the way she handled them. That part was realistic and honestly funny in a lot of places.
This book had me bursting out a laugh on several occasions.
It was quite short though and definitely ends with you wanting more.

This is definitely a nice start to a scifi-dystopian reverse harem series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written short Story
This book is well writen and has a good story line. The characters are easy to like and the main character is strong yet slightly vulnerable. Took a chance reading this book and am really looking forward to the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant sci-fi/reverse harem series that won’t disappoint
I have read the first four books in this series and have loved each and every one of them.
Nia Mars would probably appreciate my review more if I actually wrote one for each book but I read them in such quick succession that I honestly can’t remember where one book finished and the next one started. She only has herself to blame of course for releasing each book over such a short space of time.
In the Oath Forger series we are introduced to Ava Smith, a young woman trying to survive the harsh realities of what is left of the barren wasteland formally known as Earth. No surprise that we ended up destroying it ourselves. And they said global warming was a myth. Pfft!
Ava risks her life each day, scavenging what she can just to survive another day, which all comes to an end when she is abducted by pirates, ALIEN SPACE pirates. Is there any other kind?
Kidnapped and ready to face the unknown, Ava’s life is about to change in a way she never could have imagined when after being rescued by a Federation run by, you guess it... more aliens, a powerful leader/warlord steps forth and claims that she is the Oath Forger, a much revered being who will bring peace to the five governing bodies of the universe. Oh yeah...and she is also his.
Now Ava’s no idiot and pretty sure it’s a simple case of mistaken identity but if pretending to be this... Oath Forger person gets her back to Earth then well you can’t blame a girl for not denying his claim and as for the ‘his’ part well...she'll deal with that later.
Taken to a foreign planet, Ava is told that to fulfil her role as the Oath Forger she has to meet the four other leaders and accept them. Ava’s not really sure what this entails but it cant be hard right however, the moment she meets Tiam, Dason, Uthan and Roax, she immediately knows they want more from her than just a simple handshake. Plus the almost instant connection she feels towards them all is one she doesn’t know if she can or wants to deny.
I won’t go into anymore about the story line but you won’t be disappointed on how the story plays out or how the events unfold. Each book was well written and was not bogged down by information overload. I could never really predict what would happened next which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Ava was a refreshing heroine. She was a survivor with a 'I've had hard life' backstory but she didn't dwell on it nor was she closed off emotionally. I also enjoyed the fact that she was open to many of the possibilities presented to her. I thought this made her a rather complex and fascinating character. Probably one of my favourites in a series.
The guys...well apart from being totally gorgeous, sexy and oozing confidence; they each brought something unique to the dynamic of the group. I really enjoyed the way Nia Mars made them vulnerable to Ava like she was their whole world, no one existed before her. Their feelings for her were unconditional and beyond question even the dominating Roax, man that guy...I didn’t know if I wanted to kiss him or slap him.
Brilliant series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice
Good book, nice story however less detailed concerning surroundings, worlds, action, how the heroine looks etc. (other than she has long red hair) etc etc. The whole story is concentrated on Ava and her 5 admiring hunks, which is nice and works just fine for me but it would have been nice if Ava had something ' special' about her like some abilities or something instead of just existing for this role. WHY they are attractef to her. Ok she dreamt about them before meeting them.. and I hope there is more to it in the following books in this serie. It still deserves a good noting since it was great reading and I will continue to read the next book in this serie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A-mazing!!!!
A short book for me and I didn’t mind. So good, so much fun, so great, amazing and well written. I really liked this concept of space and their lords. Strong man and a girl who needs to safe the universe. I usually don’t read much space books, only I’m happy to make an exception for this series. I like Ava she is a strong person and I love how she reacts to everything around her, going with the flow and keeps strong, her head held high and I can respect someone like that.
The first Krek you meet in the book is so great, a manly man. And I have a weakness for strong man who knows what he wants, so hello Krek Koah.
It is a fun read and the first three books come out shortly after each other so that makes it easier to read them, you don’t have to wait to long for the next book.
If you like space, strong man and a strong willed girl read these books. They are great and they sucked me in, I was in their world for the duration of the book and I loved it.

I’ve finished all 5 books and I’m just amazed that more people aren’t recommending this series more!! It’s such a good story and the character are amazing!! I Love the main character, and her humour & sarcasm. I hope the author does a spin-off of this series. 🤓💜‼️
