Red Julie (An Olivia Miller Mystery Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3,341 ratings

This is Book 2 in the Olivia Miller Mystery series. Olivia was raised by her aunt Aggie from the time she was a year old. Several weeks before Olivia graduates from college, Aggie dies suddenly and unexpectedly, riding a bicycle at night near her home in Ogunquit, Maine. The death certificate lists the cause of death as a massive heart attack, but Olivia doesn’t believe it. Soon after her graduation, Olivia is on the highway, late at night, heading home to Ogunquit when she comes upon an accident. A man is on his back, in the middle of the road, his legs caught in the wreckage of his overturned Mercedes. He grabs at Olivia’s jacket and frantically mumbles to her something that sounds like, ‘red Julie’. The man dies at the scene, but not before he slips something into Olivia’s jacket pocket. Will Olivia figure out what ‘red Julie’ means and how her aunt really died that night before it is too late?

J.A. Whiting, the author of Red Julie (An Olivia Miller Mystery Book 2), has written books for at least four other series. All of these other series have ‘cozy mystery’ in the title. This series doesn’t. And while the change in title might imply a clean break from the style and characters of a cozy, the book doesn’t quite achieve it. It still has the syrup typical of the genre, e.g., “Olivia nodded as she slathered the jam on her scone and took a chomp out of it. She laughed and wiped her mouth with her napkin. ‘Yum,’ she managed.” I’m not sure eating a scone is worth a chuckle in any other genre. But it also has gore that no cozy would condone, with gruesome deaths, torture, and mutilation. Yeah, no kidding. I’m not saying the mixture is bad, but it’s…unusual.

The characters of Red Julie are quite likeable, although perhaps a bit stereotypic…or maybe, cozy-typic. The men are sensitive, thoughtful, and for some reason, always want to cook something for Olivia to eat. Olivia is smart and spunky. But there are inconsistencies as well. For example, at one point, Olivia is going to impersonate a police officer to get information. Even if she isn’t in law school yet, she should know better.

The pacing is somewhat inconsistent, being fast during the scenes of violence, but not so much in the other three-quarters of the book. Part of the reason is the repetition of clues. The mumbled phrases, discovered papers, and overheard rumors that create uncertainty about the culprits are repeated a lot. Also, the transition from action back to speculation disrupts the flow a bit. After a high-speed chase in heavy traffic, including an escape that involved a last-minute, cut-across-lanes to a rest area ploy, the story nearly stops when Olivia passes it off as nothing, wondering if “…she misperceived that the car was following her.” That’s a head scratcher of the type the author probably didn’t intend.

And finally, there’s the question that’s common to a lot of amateur sleuth novels: why is this untrained, ill-prepared amateur is investigating rather than the authorities? The answer – because the police won’t – seems a bit unbelievable after the brutal killing of a very well-to-do individual. But its fiction, after all.

Overall, much of Red Julie reads like the too-good-to-be-true characters and dialog of a cozy. Just don’t get too comfortable with it, because you never know when and how the next person will die.

A great story with twists and turns involving Olivia, Joe and Brad. Olivia is heading to her Aunt Aggies home to settle the estate and decide what to do with her home and antique shop. She stumbles into the aftermath of a horrendous car accident where she tries to help a man the seems to barely be surviving. She later discovers the man put an antique cross necklace in her pocket before he died. Olivia and a dear friend are both grieving the sudden death of her aunt Aggie and as events unfold it looks like her aunt Aggie and the mans death may be related. So Olivia, Joe and Brad who is an old schoolboy crush that has moved back to town put their heads together to figure out how the deaths are related and the hunt becomes really interesting

Why do authors write heroines so clueless? Olivia comes across an accident and there is a bystander who terrifies her. And then she thinks the accident and her aunt's death are related. So she should investigate? What? And then the ending was all neatly wrapped up with a bow.

This is sort of a pre-review review. When I look for Kindle books, I naturally first look at the title and cover. Not to say that the book is out if both are not interesting, but it's not looking good. Then I read the description. Only then do I check out the "Look Inside" preview. Regardless of story line and plot, the style and quality of writing must be good. If good here and story line and plot are compelling, then I may try the book, depending upon the price. And, if the book grabs me in the first few paragraphs or pages, then that virtually guarantees a purchase. That's what this one did. The rest of the book may not be great, but the first few pages are, at least in my opinion. I can't wait to read the rest. When I do, I'll post here my opinion.

If you aren't able to go anywhere this summer you can read this book and feel like you visited the small village in Maine where this story takes place. The descriptions of parties, swimming, the houses- made me feel like I was really there. Except that my friends and family were all pretty safe, unlike the heroine's situation where some unknown group was killing people. The uncertainty keeps the book interesting. Is it the mean thugs who
are the bad guys, or could it be the police or the guy who is like a father to her? You'll have to read to the very end to find out!

I couldn’t put this down. Following the story and all the clues. Waiting for all the tidbits to fall in place. Olivia is a really strong young lady.
