One Night in Havana: City Nights Series: #34 Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

A desperate competition and sizzling attraction leads to dangerous desire.

New York Marine biologist Veronica “Roni” Keane is attending the Havana Bay Conference in Cuba. Tomorrow only one grant will be awarded which will provide the winner with professional recognition, resources for a project, and living expenses for two years. She hopes to continue her deceased father’s work, but smooth operator, Carlos Montoya, has won many grants in the past.

Carlos, a freelancer for the Havana Port Authority, works to help protect Havana’s reputation as a bastion of safety. As international travelers flock to the island, attracted by its 1950’s time-warp and colonial architecture, the drug business is running rampant, particularly on Roni’s cruise ship. Something’s not right, and when her scuba tanks are tampered with, Carlos brings in the military police to investigate. For her safety, he keeps her close, but he craves her body.

Their attraction leads to a fun night with a bit of kink. But Roni finds herself in more trouble than she bargained for when the criminals blame her for alerting the military police and come looking for her. Can Roni trust Carlos to protect her? Will she stay in Havana if Carlos wins the coveted grant, or kiss her lover goodbye?

Book Buyers Best finalist Kathleen Rowland is devoted to giving her readers fast-paced, high-stakes suspense with a sizzling love story sure to melt their hearts. Kathleen used to write computer programs but now writes novels. She grew up in Iowa where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and raced her sailboat on Lake Okoboji. Kathleen exists happily with her witty CPA husband, Gerry, in their 70’s poolside retreat in Southern California where she adores time spent with visiting grandchildren, dogs, one bunny, and noisy neighbors. While proud of their five children who’ve flown the coop, she appreciates the luxury of time to write!

Kathleen is an in-house author at Tirgearr Publishing. Her Irish-American Donahue Cousins series includes Deadly Alliance, Unholy Alliance, and another, Bittersweet Alliance is in the works. One Night in Havana (in the City Nights series) has a release date of January 31, 2018.

Escape to the seductive city of Havana in this erotic romantic suspense by Kathleen Rowland.

Veronica Keane is a marine biologist in town vying for a prestigious grant. She’s the daughter of a famous scientist but that fact only makes Roni work harder to prove herself to the scientific community. Her competitor is the drop-dead gorgeous Dr. Carlos Montoya and he’s won many grants in the past. It’s the night before the announcement and Roni is taking in the Havana nightlife. She runs into Carlos and after a few drinks, decides to hook up with him. What happens next is a riveting night filled with hot sex, the drug trade, corrupt officials and bad guys coming after Roni. Can Carlos protect her without her losing her heart or will they make an even better team?

I’ve always wondered in my over-active imagination what a one-night stand in a foreign country feels like and thanks to the City Nights series by Tirgearr Publishing, I get to experience it. One Night in Havana is much more than a steamy romance; it’s a romantic suspense with plenty of hot sex. When we first meet Roni, she’s aloof towards Carlos but by the end of the night sees him for the good man he is. The ending was surprising but very fulfilling. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Havana through both Carlos’ and Roni’s point of view. It’s a city chockful of bad people and honest people trying to carve out a way of life. There’s political intrigue, plenty of action and steamy romance that’ll melt your insides. A must read and highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: Something like a flashfire in her belly, but now they were talking. “Am I the apple of desire? Want to take a bite out of me?” She pulled in a breath. Had she really said that?

    “Bonita, do I ever.”

Sometimes danger can be the most powerful aphrodisiac of them all.

Ms. Rowland’s descriptions of the scenery were so vivid that they made me feel like I’d been to Cuba even though I’ve never actually been to that country in real life. The beaches sounded gorgeous at any time of the day or night. I also enjoyed the descriptions she gave of what Cuban culture is like. It wasn’t something I knew much about at all, so I was glad that she spent so much time showing how Cuba is different from other parts of the world.

The chemistry between Roni and Carlos never felt right to me. The plot didn’t spend very much time developing these characters, so it was hard for me to figure out what their personalities were like and why they were so attracted to each other. Having more details about who these people were would have made it a lot easier to root for them to end up together.

My favorite scenes were the ones that focused on why Roni’s scuba equipment was tampered with and how the authorities reacted to that. Not only were they fast-paced and exciting, they placed the main characters in so much peril that I couldn’t wait to find out how they might escape. I actually read the whole story in one siting because I couldn’t bear to put it down until I knew how everything would turn out.

If you’re in the mood for an erotic mystery, One Night in Havana is a good place to start.

Veronica Keane is not the most gregarious of people, and she needs to be if she stands a chance of schmoozing her way to winning the marine biologist grant to study octopi. She's come to Cuba for the conference where the money will be awarded, only to find herself in competition with Carlos Montoya—again. Dr. Montoya is a smooth talker, always knowing the right thing to say and do to put himself front and center. While Carlos wants the grant money, too, he wishes Veronica wasn't quite so shy and reserved. He likes her. He didn't know that she was every bit as attracted to him until they are caught in the gunfire between the military and drug runners anxious to score on the newly established relations between the U.S. and Cuba.

This is my first Kathleen Rowland book and I really enjoyed this fast-paced romp. It's steamy and romantic, and an interesting and unique take on the romantic hero. I recommend it—what's better than a little Latin heat on the hot summer days and nights ahead?

One Night in Havana, by Kathleen Rowland, is an erotic novella with a steamy Cuban setting. It’s main characters, Roni and Carlos, waste no time in hooking up, and have repeatedly hot sexual encounters throughout the story. Fast-paced and written to entice readers of erotica, thrillers and mysteries - this is a book that will, if nothing else, have readers wanting to take a Cuban vacation.

Though the characters and setting are both constructed with details that intrigued me, I was put-off by the raunchiness of the language every time Roni and Carlos got together. Perhaps this is the style of the genre, but it was too graphic for me and took away from my enjoyment of the overall story. Both characters are marine biologists, competing to win a grant for continued scientific study at the Havana Bay Conference. Carlos also has a side-gig at the Havana Bay Port Authority, and the story gains in mystery, action and adventure after Carlos investigates Roni’s ship for drug-smuggling. Roni is caught in the middle when Carlos gets police involved, and the criminals blame Roni for messing up their plans. Carlos vows to protect her, and so continues their whirlwind romance that is based on a constant sexual attraction in the hot Havana night.

Ultimately, I would not have finished this novella had I not been expected to write a review on it. I just couldn’t get past the hardcore sex scenes to enjoy the overall story, which seemed promising in its beginning. Rowland has created two intelligent, distinct characters in an attractive setting. But what begins as an intriguing adventure ends as many erotic stories do - with the couple deciding that their sex-induced love affair may stand the test of time and turn into a committed relationship ending in “I do.”
