Open Your Eyes
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
Jane Campbell avoids confrontation at all costs. Given the choice, she'll always let her husband, Leon - a best-selling thriller author - fight their battles. She'd prefer to focus on the good things in life: precious days with her two young children, a steady and loving marriage, their mischievously playful cat Bonita, and her fulfilling job as a creative-writing teacher. In Jane's eyes, life is altogether sweeter than any individual bump in the road.
But when Leon suffers a brutal attack, Jane has to finally face reality. Who would commit such a hateful offense? Leon has imagined his fair share of crime on the page, and now unthinkable violence has landed on the Campbell family doorstep. With her husband in a coma, Jane must open her eyes to the problems and secrets in her life. Although she might not like what she sees, if she's committed to discovering who hurt her husband - and why - she needs to take matters into her own hands.

My Thoughts: I am a big fan of Paula Daly, so I was eager to read Open Your Eyes. From the very beginning, I was caught up in the lives of Jane and her husband Leon. What happened to him upended their lives, and as I rapidly turned the pages, I kept asking myself who among their acquaintances would have done such a horrendous thing? But as Jane makes discoveries and realizes the extent of Leon’s secrets, she is afraid. And when the police seem to be looking in all the wrong directions, Jane tries to figure some of it out on her own. But will her efforts take her into more dangerous places?
I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next, so the pages flew by. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the answers came seemingly out of nowhere. I loved how the twists and turns took us into the dark side of the publishing world. 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2022First, let me say CONGRATS to the author...not a single copy editing mistake, thank God. Second, FINALLY someone who actually considers the day-to-day FINANCIAL fall out of things (I want to say more but can't do it without giving things away). And absolutely had me up at night reading and scratching my head puzzling.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2021The book is well written and its an interesting story but the main character, a full grown mother and wife, was so dependent on her husband that it was cringeworthy. Her worshipful idealization of him was frankly irritating.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2018A compulsively-good, twisty thriller that will make you consider the nightmare a life can become following a single moment!!! This is my first Paula Daly and I had a blast reading Open Your Eyes! I actually wish I could start this review with the last line of the book, because it was THAT GOOD! But of course, the last line would spoil some things about the story so I won’t post it here. But if you’ve read Open Your Eyes by Paula Daly or when you do, savor that last line! I’m still thinking about it days later!

Reflection
Well, I completely loved this book! Let’s start with the main drama of the book—Leon’s injury! In the few minutes that Jane went inside to grab things for their trip, Leon is attacked in a horrifying way and it leaves permanent damage. Even beyond the coma, Jane has to go through the experience of living with someone who had a traumatic brain injury. And this injury has completely changed Leon. He has memory issues and personality changes that would be so difficult to live with!
I have a colleague who was married to someone who suffered a traumatic brain injury and it was so awful. His personality completely changed, and eventually it was no longer safe for her or her children to be around him. And the saddest part is, it is not his fault. So you want to stay and do the right thing. Brain injuries can truly change a person’s personality. They may be angrier, suffer from poor decision-making. Of course, I won’t say how it plays out in this book. You’ll have to read and see! Often as the swelling reduces, many of their new issues will lessen. Will Leon be so lucky??
And then we have the mystery itself! Aside from the changes to Leon, what was he not telling Jane before the accident? She’s stuck with questions and no answers. As Jane investigates, more troubling information will come to light, and she’s left alone unable to talk to Leon about it. I loved Jane and her storyline. I though Paula Daly handled the realities of this change to Jane’s life in such an authentic way.
And then we have a delightful storyline about writers. Not only are Jane and Leon writers, but they have friends and other colleagues who enter the plot. I was fascinated by the dynamics between Leon—a successful writer—and Jane—a still unpublished writer. Each has their own hang ups! For Leon, how will he know he can deliver book after book? And for Jane, how will she know when to keep trying to catch her break? And then we have the whole cast of writers in between. This storyline sang to my writer’s soul! It is a real treat, and I think many readers and writers will relate to the issues presented in the book.
And then we are back to that ending. Loved it!!! It was so perfect!!! I can’t wait for readers to get to the closing line, and reflect back on the book. I’m still processing it days later!
Many thanks to the team at Grove Press for my copy of this book to review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and unique
Really interesting and a unique story. The ending was slightly a bit too quick and could have done with more excitement or thrill

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Superb Story
Another easy 5* from this reader !! That's all 4 of Mrs Daly's books I've read and all 4 with top marks. I am loving her stories. Although she STILL persists in using bloody American spellings......she has now started putting an apostrophe in Ladies'. So perhaps book 5 will fix the correct English English. Saying this, though, she did spell coloured the proper way.
I was sobbing by the end of this one last night as I finished.....and what an ending ! I've never read a conclusion quite like it, though I loved it. I do think she seemed to get a little rushed, though, as we got there.....it could so easily have had an additional 100 pages without making anything drag.
It was such a shocking crime featured right at the start as well. Again, nothing like I've read before. Such a terrific idea, though, masterfully executed. One thing I was a little puzzled at was Leon supposedly being attacked in their driveway but there were a lot of parking shenanigans featured throughout. So I couldn't really figure out if they had a driveway or not.
I liked how she referred to nursing staff in this, too. She opened MY eyes regarding a brain injury as well, and living with the person so injured.....god, it has to be a nightmare.....she made such an interesting observation about the mind and the body....though I did have a titter at Leon's mum being so horrified by one of his actions.....
Twice in the book, quite bizarrely, the word "here" was added, needlessly, in a sentence but as a clickable link that just jumped you forward into the book for some reason. A mistake I've never happened across before....I checked and it happened on both my Kindle and my phone. She wrote "It's the quite opposite, really" when I'd have written "It's quite the opposite, really" but that was it for mistakes that I happened to spot. Pretty good going, I'd say !!
So I chuckled, I was shocked and appalled and in a couple of places I was sobbing.....this book definitely has something for everyone. I was so disappointed when it was over. I'm looking forward to her next, now. I preordered this one and of course, if you buy one as soon as it's released, you're in for a much longer wait till the next !!

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling book, but the ending feels a little rushed
I enjoyed reading this book, although the genre is not my usual fare. The chapters are short, and the pace is brisk. The plot is compelling, and I found myself thinking about the characters even when I wasn't reading the story. My only comment is that the "reveal" seems hurried and you learn all the answers so swiftly that it felt a little anticlimactic to me. It all ties together so neatly, so quickly, that compared to the rest of the story it's almost as if (ironically) somebody else has written the ending... I enjoyed it, but I think the ending could have been elaborated on and lasted longer, gradually revealing the mysteries one at a time (rather than in two or three pages).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I wish Paula Davy would write another book. I devoured everything that she wrote a few years ago so I am actually rereading all of her books and enjoying them immensely. This one was excellent; I have read so much since i last read it, I couldn’t remember the plot or “whodunnit!” Admittedly it is a little disconcerting to not remember what happened- but I am genuinely enjoying reading them all again. This one is brilliant- with one exception: the last line! It was totally unnecessary and a bit clumsy. (No spoilers in my reviews!)
