Our Thing: An Australian Mafia Romance (Our Thing Collection Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 3,752 ratings

The city's golden girl falls heart-first into a dark underworld.

I want two things in life: to be the leading ballerina in my academy—
And Max Butcher…

A massive, tattooed boxer, and renowned thug.
And my very first crush...

I may be a silly little girl to him, but he's intent on protecting, possessing, and claiming me in every way—his little piece of purity.

But there is more to Max Butcher than the cold, cruel facade he wears like armour. I know; I saw the broken boy inside him one day when we were only children.

So, even as I stand in the shadows with him, as people get hurt...
as people die… I refuse to let him believe he's nothing more than a piece in his Family's corrupt empire.

There is good inside Max Butcher, and I refuse to let him live in the dark forever.

Author notes: Our Thing is book one in The Kids of The District series and has a happily for now with part two live. Part two has a happily ever after. This book features a powerful and grumpy hero and an endearing, sunshine -like heroine. Both main characters are possessive and fight for each other. It is a love story, with spice, steam, violence, and drama. Enjoy.

Wow! What a book!!

Wow! What a book!!
Holy cow I love me some Max! This book is amazing! Nicci Harris did an amazing job of weaving the emotions and story arc in this book. The characters each have a unique personality and each of them play such a crucial role in Cassidy’s life. The pieces of Max that we get to see when he is with his “little one” make me just love his character more! He is protective and hard but so soft and loving. Seriously read this book!!! It’s awesome sauce! I’ve already picked up book three because I need more Max and Cassidy in my life.

I can confidently say Our Thing by Nicki Harris has become my absolute obsession. I’ve read this book at least once a month for the past year, and somehow, it just keeps getting better every time. Nicki Harris’s writing completely draws me in, it’s emotional, gripping, and so vivid that it feels like I’m living every moment with the characters.

Cassidy and Max have completely stolen my heart. Watching their relationship grow throughout the story is one of the most satisfying experiences I’ve had as a reader. Their chemistry is electric, and their bond feels so real and natural. Every twist and turn kept me locked to my Kindle, unable to put it down. I was constantly surprised by where the story went, and I loved every second of it.

Whenever I need a pick-me-up or a comfort read, I always turn back to this series. It has the perfect balance of spice, romance, drama, and emotion. Every character feels so well-developed and unforgettable, it’s impossible not to love them all.

Our Thing isn’t just a book to me, it’s a full experience. I’m beyond thankful to have found it and I know it’s a story I’ll treasure for a long time.

The way this book is structured and written brings back those memories of being young and in love with someone that should have been alone. But, that didn't happen to me and it didn't happen to Cassidy. There were moments in this book that made me weep for Max and others that made me weep because of Max. It was sweet and touching and wonderful. At the end, I wanted more and more of their story. It's based in Australia so there were some things I had to look up to understand the context but I knew that in advance. I only got this entire series because the snippet/preview that snagged me was part of book 4 of 6 and even with standalones I don't like to read them out of publication order. It was the right decision. I needed their story. Highly recommend.

I love the innocence of Cassidy. But I love, love, love the clash of innocence with the bad boy. Max is the ultimate bad boy, but can hold some softness with his " little one". The life Max lives is so much harsher than Cassidy had ever lived.

Cassidy is a ballerina. It's what she knows. Hard work training and balancing her love for dance with her love for her family, but Max Butcher caught her eye and she's been infatuated with him ever since. But that infatuation will soon show her things she never imagined existed.

Max is hard. He protects himself from the emotional scars and from emotions in general. However Cassidy gets past his walls and he's not prepared. He's made her promises that he shouldn't. This is an intense love story, spicy, hot, and alot of holy crap. Can't wait to read more.

I found this book because I saw a BookTok for a later book in this series and I always start at the beginning. I’ll give it this - I didn’t bail halfway like I do whenever the writing isn’t good.

The writing: Actually pretty good (not cheesy and unbelievable, well-rounded, good word choice, etc.)

The spice: HOT. That’s what this book has going for it. The spicy scenes are creative and hot.

Realistic elements: Let me preface this by saying that I’m from the United States. I watch plenty of foreign shows/movies, but rarely read foreign literary works. Understand that my perspective on this might be more negative because I’m basing it off of what I know as an American.
    1) The sports references throughout the book are weird. Maybe it’s different in Australia, but in the States, I’d you’re a college athlete, you are 1,000% committed. If you aren’t, there’s an unbelievable number of athletes waiting to take your spot. I can’t fathom being at the university level and basically picking and choosing when you want to play for the team. Unless it’s intramural, then that would make sense.
    2) This is probably also because I’m an American, but owning/possessing a firearm isn’t such a big deal. Again, maybe it’s because we have the second amendment, but I can’t believe being so afraid of a gun and having so much content about the FMC basically rationalizing how the MMC can be a good person yet carry a gun.
    3) One of the biggest problems with the development of the story is that the WHOLE book there is person after person after person who comes up to Cassidy and warn her away from Max. The whole book is spent spinning the notion that “Max is into dangerous stuff,” “Max us so dangerous,” “you don’t understand, this world is HORRIBLE,” etc. However, there never seems to really be proof of it. He carries a gun (which I suppose in Australia makes him a criminal, but that’s actually not a bad thing to carry a gun). He gets randomly called away. His mother is abusive. His dad is kind of cold (again, more talked about than shown). Everyone, including family friends, seem scared of him… but why? He pops off and then apologizes just as quickly. It’s just not really realistic. It’s like how when someone has to tell everyone how “bad” they are, they probably aren’t (exhibit A: JoJo Siwa).
    4) The names. Again, maybe it’s an Australian thing, but I’ve never heard “Flicker” and “Blesk”… “Flicker is I guess a nickname (which isn’t even explained, you just find out half way through because someone calls her Felicity). Blesk has zero explanation. Maybe cultural, but it doesn’t translate well.

I own all these reads/audio and I am in total awe and love with every single one.
Audio is FANTASTIC.. The Narrators makes a great book epic.

I cant believe I did not review them immediately.. Might be since they feel like my family I kept them close to my heart.
Nicci’s inner monologues writing style takes the whole damn cake.. It's magnificent. I am there with all of them all of the time.

I must say I have a special place for Bronson but the Butcher Boys and their Queens are all the greatest. I will happily read on if Nicci is to write more.

so its an easy 6+ starts lols.. It's the best.

I will cross post my review as it stands for them all.

Spicy, Brutal, Honest and just overall next level story telling.

Honestly People! I am surprised at the negative reviews this book has gotten. I love Max and Cassidy, The small sweet girl and the Bad boy Max. She has pinned after max for years and then he finally gives her his attention and Max is in the Mafia life whether he wants be or not. He definitely falls hard for Cassidy and i think that their love is sweet. He is a big ol' grump and she is a ray of sunshine. I love how this book along with the other kids of the district are very family oriented and in Max's case....Some times good people do bad things. There are triggers so read with caution but i think this book is sweet and builds a story of the district for us

    Spanish & English Opinion

    ESP ::

Me gustaron muchas cosas.

    ENG ::

I enjoyed many things. The drawings for each chapter and the pictures that helped me visualize Max and Cassidy perfectly. I also enjoyed that the story has an original setting (Australia) and the mafia context.

She’s a ballerina. She’s somewhat naive but sometimes she really make me roll my eyes. He’s a jerk. Yes, he likes her, loves her eventually but he’s a jerk. However, he becomes better... but I loved his relationship with his brothers, his sense of loyalty, his family.

Definitely, going into the second part of the duet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic love story for the ages: The sweet Ballerina Girl and her Butcher Boy
Reviewed in Australia on May 7, 2023
    Format: KindleVerified Purchase
Our Thing & Cosa Nostra Duet is a Grumpy Sunshine Australian Mafia Romance that took my heart on this deliciously suspenseful and steamy journey of the epic love story that is the Sweet Ballerina Girl and her Butcher Boy Menace and hooked me on from beginning to end and I just could not get enough!

Max Butcher and Cassidy Slater’s pulse-pounding and heart racing love story features:
    ❤️Sweet ballerina heroine
    ❤️Mafia Heir
    ❤️Sweet & Spicy
    ❤️Man of few words
❤️Only has a smile for her
    ❤️ Disrespect her and die
❤️ He enjoys EVERY part of her
    ❤️He calls her little one
❤️She's a good girl with the whole world at her feet.
❤️He's a bad boy with his foot on the world.

From the very first Chapter, I absolutely loved Cassidy: her sweet and selfless nature.
I loved her relationship with her sister, and especially her best mate Tony: Oh my giddy Aunt: Tony had the best lines and banter I really loved their friendship.

These 2 are total opposites Cassidy the sweet, petite Ballerina and Max the tough possessive Alpha Mafia Heir. Their worlds are poles apart, but the more they fall for one another, the more Cassidy gets pulled into Max’s world. The more Max tries to protect Cassidy from being pulled deeper in his
world, the more she pushes back.

Oh Max, (in a Cassidy voice), the tough mafia heir, who was born into a life he didn’t choose, growing up in the face of brutality, learning and experiencing first hand, from a very young age the darkness and evil that lurks in humanity.
The playboy, never looking to settle, who met his match in Cassidy: who melted his heart and in doing so, Max melted mine into a puddle…he’s such a swoonfest with her, so possessive and all consuming, which is how I would describe this duet: This story will reach into your chest and rip out your heart, but Nicci will delicately stitch it back together, owning a piece of your heart forever.
Max totally broke me though: in the best way: his all-consuming love for Cassidy: chapter 34 of Cosa Nostra absolutely destroyed me…and like Cassidy: I love Max Butcher: Menace.

Nicci gave us an epic love story full of passion, and super steamy, spicy but not without the angst: it seems like many of my unicorn authors, Nicci likes to torture you, in the best way: she’s given us this gritty Australian Mafia Romance that is so dark and delicious that you never want to leave.
Cassidy and Max’s journey to HEA was full of emotion, steam and spicy and had me reaching for the fan and blushing! Take note tho: this is a gritty dark romance, so check your triggers.

Georgia Hart and Rupert Channing narrate this audiobook and I really enjoyed their performances and were fantastic in bringing the Ballerina and the Butcher Boy to life!
Georgia’s portrayal of Cassidy was kind, pure, driven and determined to get her man and I fell hard for her sweet and gentle disposition.

Rupert really turned up the grumpy and bossy in his performance and really showcased Max’s possessive and protective side so perfectly in this performance. But Georgia’s Cassidy wasn’t having any of that, she portrayed Cassidy’s determination to stand with Max and be part of his world and I couldn’t help but fall hard for her feistiness wrapped in her sunshine persona. Both narrators really turned up the intensity in their performance and Max & Cassidy’s chemistry: oooft!

I loved this duet: If you’re a fan of a Hot Australian Dark Mafia Romance with a Grumpy possessive Mafia heir with a penchant for sweet Sunshine Ballerina’s, then you will love this Duet! This is a deliciously dark and emotional story from an absolute genius author, performed by wonderful voice actors: All the menacing & giddy stars!
