OUT OF AIR; A breathless race-against-time serial killer thriller: The DCI Jamie Carver Series, Book Three Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,606 ratings

"A brilliant rounding off of a stunning trilogy." - John Goodwin

A climactic confrontation. But who will survive?

  • One city; Paris
  • Two killers; one in hiding, the other stalking the streets
  • An innocent young couple, bewitched into the deadliest danger
  • The detective who must find them all before the worst happens

In this, the third book of The Worshipper Trilogy, Jamie Carver finds himself torn between the need to catch a killer whose brutality matches anything he has seen so far, and recapturing one whose shadow has hung over him far too long. What he cannot know is that the two are on a converging path - one that will end in bloody, violent death.

But whose will it be? The Paris Killer's? His would-be Nemesis'? His own?

Or all of them?

OUT OF AIR is a gripping, race-against-time crime/thriller in which the threads of the story that began in LAST GASP, and continued in FINAL BREATH. come together in a breathless, terrifying, climax. ROBERT F BARKER is a former, thirty-year served Senior Police Detective. OUT OF AIR is the third in his series of gritty crime thrillers featuring his resourceful, but sometimes conflicted, murder detective, Jamie Carver.

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of Northwest UK's grittiest towns and cities. He writes stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they sometimes are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). During his service, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens.

As a former Senior Investigating Officer and Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his background, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as can be found anywhere in today's crime fiction.

He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, UK, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his crime novels.

In this third book of the Worshipper series, DCI Jamie Carver has to contend with two brutal killers, one of whom mesmerizes him. He ends up working outside of his jurisdiction (and outside the law) to bring a resolution to a harrowing case.

As with the other two books in the Worshipper Trilogy, I found this hard to read because of the dark, gritty, graphic nature of the subject matter (BDSM, a priest who is off the rails, child abuse, random murders, you name it). But I also couldn’t put it down because I had to find out what happened to the hapless American tourists, the killers, and Carver and his crew.

The writing is tight, the plot engaging, and the ending a complete surprise. Carver is flawed but ultimately honorable, and seems like a real person to me. All of the characters, even the minor ones, had depth. I did have to page past some of the descriptions, because I’m kind of squeamish, but I stayed because I really needed to know how it all turned out, and whether Carver was OK at the end.

No spoilers here, but while this is a fitting end to the Worshipper Trilogy, there is a book 4, at least, for Carver. This series is best read in order (even if you need to take recovery breaks between the stories).

The continuing struggle to catch the killer, the nearly happily ever after ending with a teaser to boot. Predictable, but with the engaging characters, the well developed plot, twists and turns an all together enjoyable read.

If you liked the first two books in the series, this installment won't disappoint. It may be able to stand on its own, but there is a lot of reference to events from the previous books, so works best as the third in the trilogy.

I was a little disappointed in this book. If you didn't read the books in order, you would have no idea what the book was about. The previous books were very good. This book set in France was hard to follow due to French language that was used too much, took away from the story. It took til the middle of the book to connect it to the previous two excellent books.

Mr Barker is a superbly skilled writing! Loved the final book in this trilogy! Couldn't put the book down for love of money ! The intensity in the story never wavered! Had trouble sleeping realising how "real" it all can be!! Thank you! Mr Barker is certainly one of my new favourite writers!

5.0 out of 5 stars He achieves a nice balance between how police officers work

Out of Air is the thrilling finale of the Worshipper Trilogy, which has been an intriguing series from start to finish. Robert F Barker has produced three page turners, that twist and turn and keep you guessing right to the end. Barker's former life as a police officer is evident in his knowledge of how murder investigations are carried out, but he never gets bogged down with the procedures. He achieves a nice balance between how police officers work, and the human stories - with well drawn characters, and a captivating femme fatale at the Trilogy's heart. In my view, Barker ought to take his place among the top writers of this genre. I devoured Out of Air in a couple of days, and was so drawn into the breathless pace of the story, I found myself out of air by the end! Can highly recommend if you love a gritty, dark, compelling thriller.

Robert tackles a tough Paris setting and pulls it off very well for an Englishman
An unsuspected ending with lots of detective work too boot.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read marred by poor editing

After having read the first two books in the trilogy, I purchased Out of Air, looking forward to the dénouement. I have only just started reading the book (chapter 12) and find I am continually frustrated by grammatical errors - or typos - such as bought instead of brought, it's instead of its, etc. These were present in the first two books but, over all, the story line is good and the work is well-written and fast-paced. In Out of Air, there are so many mistakes in the (mis)use of French phrases, street names, grammar and so on that I have interrupted the reading to write this - one of my only Amazon reviews with more than 250 books purchased on my Kindle. Why is it so difficult to find a competent proofreader/editor? I am really enjoying the trilogy and will certainly continue reading Out of Air (hence the 4-star rating) but I sincerely hope that Robert Barker will find a new proofreader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Such an odd ending

The beginning of this book as Ok but the ending is astonishingly ridiculous in my opinion - had echoes of The Silence of the Lambs when Lecter "captures" Clarise - Carver is a much stronger character in my opinion
Very puzzled by author's direction for Carver
