Outcry: Holocaust Memoirs (Holocaust Survivor Memoirs World War II) Paperback – February 4, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
A brutally honest survivor story of human endurance in WWII
Manny Steinberg (1925-2015) spent his teens in Nazi concentration camps in Germany, miraculously surviving while millions perished. This is his story. Born in the Jewish ghetto in Radom (Poland), Steinberg noticed that people of Jewish faith were increasingly being regarded as outsiders. In September 1939 the Nazis invaded, and the nightmare started. The city’s Jewish population had no chance of escaping and was faced with starvation, torture, sexual abuse and ultimately deportation.
Outcry. Holocaust Memoirs is the candid account of a teenager who survived four Nazi camps: Dachau, Auschwitz, Vaihingen an der Enz, and Neckargerach.
Manny Steinberg’s brother Stanley had jumped off the cattle wagon on the way to the extermination camp where his mother and younger brother were to perish. Desperately lonely and hungry, Stanley stood outside the compound hoping to catch a glimpse of Manny and their father. Once he discovered that they were among the prisoners, he turned himself in. The days were marked by hunger, cold, hard labor, and fear. Knowing that other members of the family were in the same camp kept them alive. Since acknowledging each other would have meant death, they pretended to be complete strangers.Manny Steinberg relates how he was served human flesh and was forced to shave the heads of female corpses and pull out their teeth. Cherishing a picture of his beloved mother in his wooden shoe, he miraculously survived the terror of the German concentration camps together with his father and brother.
When the Americans arrived in April 1945, Manny was little more than a living skeleton, with several broken ribs and suffering from a serious lung condition, wearing only a dirty, ragged blanket.
This award-winning WWII survivor autobiography was written to fulfil a promise Steinberg made to himself during the first days of freedom. By publishing his Holocaust memoirs, he wanted to ensure that the world never forgets what happened during the Second World War in Europe. The narrative of this Holocaust survivor book is personal, unencumbered and direct. The story set in Poland and Germany in WWII is told through the eyes of an old man forcing himself to relive years of intense suffering. It is an account of human cruelty, but also a testimony to the power of love and hope. Outcry has become a classic of Holocaust literature and human survival, and is recommended reading for college students and the younger generation in general.
- "Manny's story is heart breaking and yet living proof of the strength of the human spirit."
- "I read this book with a very heavy heart and tears running down my face."
- "Honest, to the point and as expected, horrific. No wallowing in self pity, no attempts to exaggerate."
- "An incredible story of survival."
- "Where I expected a depressing book, I instead came out encouraged. Yes, the book reveals terrible, terrible things. But it also demonstrates how a loving, compassionate, and grateful heart can continue to hold gentleness and kindness, regardless of the injustices it suffers. I admire this writer and his attitude."

Review
I miss Manny already. I finished his harrowing memoir yesterday, and now I'm sad. Manny told his story in such a warm and winning way, I felt part of the family. From his charmed early life with his nuclear family, to the gates of Nazi hell, his love for his surviving father and brother never falters. His story is captivating. - CarolAnne Bills
I thought this book was an incredible account of a courageous and tenacious young man's survival through six long years of barbarity. That he survived was little short of a miracle but even more amazing was that his father and brother survived too. I particularly enjoyed reading how he picked up the bits in 1945 and not only made his way in life but also tried to show his gratitude to the country that had taken him in. - Carole Molyneux
This is an absolutely wonderful story of life during the Holocaust if "wonderful" is a word that could be used in conjunction with this terrible event. I've read quite a few books on this topic yet still have trouble believing how cruel human beings can be to one another. This book really brought home to me the horrible things that were done to so many people during WWII. - Micky R
This book challenges everyone, as the events told are so excruciatingly painful and horrible. It speaks to us as we read it, telling us not to forget, never to take tyranny and ideologies filled with hatred as something to get used to.- Diddi
This is a wonderful book. Profoundly moving, following a life and lives subjected to such unimaginable suffering, inflicted through the darkest irrationalities that humans can sink to; and yet ultimately it's a tale of the triumph of the human spirit over evil.- Biblioph88

About the author

Manny Steinberg (1925-2015), born in Radom (Poland), spent his early years in Nazi Camps, amongst which Auschwitz, Vaihingen an der Enz and Dachau. He decided to write his autobiography "Outcry - Holocaust Memoirs" when the six years of living in camps were over.
By writing his story, he fulfilled a promise he made to himself during the first days of freedom. The writing process took him ten years, and the fact that his "Outcry - Holocaust Memoirs" is being read by so many people across the world, made the author feel that he was finally being heard. He read every single review and was immensely grateful for all the appreciation. His book often ranked on the bestselling lists since publication in September 2014 and has been read and appreciated by more than 200,000 people.
Manny Steinberg had never wanted to return to Germany again, until recently. In April 2015 the 90-year-old was invited, along with seven other survivors, to attend the commemoration of the liberation 70 years ago of his last camp, Vaihingen an der Enz. It was an emotional visit during which he was joined by his family and friends. They also made a visit to Dachau. Sadly, he passed away on the 21st of December 2015.
Steinberg's life story has captured the miracle of one man's determination to survive. The book is inevitably an account of human cruelty, but also a testimony to the power of love and hope. By publishing his Holocaust memoirs, the author wanted to ensure that the world never forgets what happened during WWII.
"Not a day goes by that I do not think of my childhood or family, but as long as I'm allowed to be here on earth, I will wake up everyday feeling fortunate and blessed."
"When the German soldiers killed everyone I loved, I knew my purpose was to not merely exist but to live."
"I will forgive but cannot forget."
Manny attributed his tenacity in pursuing his book publication to his wife of over 60 years: "Without the support of Mimi, it would have been very difficult to write my story."
The mayor of Vaihingen an der Enz on the passing away of Manny Steinberg: “I am deeply saddened and distressed about the death of Manny Steinberg. It was my honor to meet and appreciate him in Spring 2015 in Vaihingen an der Enz, a town in which he suffered dreadful things during the Nazi era. He joined hands with us to reconcile and we will hold him in honorable remembrance.” (December 2015)

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2025Excellent memoir of Manny Steinberg's experience of living through the Holocaust. He and his brother and father had amazing fortitude and character to be able to live through all of the torture the Nazi's put them through. It's a tough read because he does not hold anything back about what he had go through. But it's something everyone should read in order to have some grasp of what happened and not let something like this happen again.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2018This is a very personal first-hand account of one young man's journey through the holocaust. Mendel Steinberg was only 13 when the germans invaded his city and and began their destruction. He documents numerous atrocities from his years in the Radom ghetto and multiple concentration camps. I'm thankful that Manny was able to write this book, even though recalling these memories, re-living all of it must have been a nightmare for him. We should all know the horrors that the prisoners lived through, both those who made it out alive and those who didn't.
I learned more horrifying facts from this book, such as the pieces of soap that some prisoners were given to use were made from rendered flesh of the dead. Of prisoners having to use their only food bowl as a toilet through the night. The torture and indecencies forced upon the prisoners are heartbreaking and beyond comprehension, something no living being should ever go through.
The way the prisoners comforted and helped each other, sometimes at the risk of their own lives, is both heartwarming and heroic. My favorite part of the book is when Mendel and his fellow prisoners are finally rescued by American soldiers, given a clean bed, food, and their freedom. I loved hearing how wonderful it was for him to go back to being treated like a human being again after the hell he had lived with for years. I also loved learning about him moving to America and the life he was finally able to live.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2015I think this was a different reading experience than is typical for the holocaust type of book. It is written from the view point of a teenager who pretty much "grew up" in the concentration type camps. It is a short book and though it shared some new atrocities from the vantage point of someone watching it (the infant used as a clay pigeon basically) it was easy enough to read. It was not grisly as it certainly could have been. Don't get me wrong, I'm not minimizing the atrocities, it just wasn't totally focused on that specifically, it was more about day to day life and the sheer hunger and conditions. It was amazing that he maintained his overall good attitudes toward people. As he got out into the country in transport, he realized what many people don't, that no one knew this was going on. Most of the Germans did not. He did not hate the innocent ones, but realized that they too were victims, though to a far lesser degree. It was the Hitler regime that did this. There was no one to stop the outrageous behaviors.
I thought it was interesting to read this from a point of view of someone who was actually there and moved around a lot. To hear the questions of "why is this happening?". Though most were Jewish, not everyone was, that were subject to this treatment as he noted in some camps.
I overall liked reading his book. It was decent writing, but I went in knowing this is not a professional writer so was not looking for that. The only hard to follow part was in the beginning as he was discussing his childhood "before", it was a bit too unclear in the back and forth if he meant far past, recent past, or what.. there were several chapters in the beginning like that. That was really there to set the stage for how life suddenly changed for some people. Total confusion as to why any of this was happening.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2024My total commitment review this book was that it captured my heart and my fears for the future. It was written in such an honest and sincere manner that you could feel all the emotions emanating from Manny's soul. While you could understand his wanting to hate all the people who took so much from him, he helped to teach how not all people were against him. He still maintained a compassionate heart. What I feel so strongly about in this book, was his need to give something back to the country that had liberated his father, brother and himself. This book is a lesson of what racism is, the cost of it and who saved him. Excellent reading for the future of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book...very well written
Just can't imagine the pain and sufferings Jews had to go through without reason. The details and emotions penned down by author even after years is vivid and makes you cry. Salute to all survivors, their hope and faith to go on is commendable.

5.0 out of 5 stars This account of survival in four Nazi concentration camps is inspiring.
How is it possible to read Manny Steinberg's Out-cry and feel hope as well as joy in this account of a young boy's five years in four concentration camps, including Dachau and Auschwitz? Manny does not spare the reader the horror of his days as he clung to life despite the slave labour, starvation, bitter cold and daily brutality that was life in the camps. It is Manny's humanity, the depths of his ability to forgive, his capacity to see the good in people, to feel sympathy even for his jailers and how he finds joy in the smallest of things that make him an inspiration, even in the darkest of times. Thirteen when imprisoned, his 12 year-old brother and his father were fellow prisoners. While unable to acknowledge them for fear of death, they helped sustain him. All three survived and moved to the US where each carved out a new life. The remarkable Manny Steinberg is a testimony to the best in who we all are and can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please read and keep this book and the writers memory alive.
Heartbreaking and extremely difficult to read, not only because of the pure horrific accounts of everything that happened, but knowing that so many suffered for so long and so close to the end of the war only to die just before it. It is a well written, extremely honest and unforgettable book, for which you need a strong stomach at times, but since this brave and admirable man had the courage to write it I think it should be read by as many as possible, if only to prolong his voice which was silenced for so long and in a sense keep his freedom alive. I hope he and his departed family are in the most beautiful Heaven, now free from the darkness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, horrifying and revealing
I thought I knew a fair bit about the Holocaust through my reading of other books through the years but this man wrote about things I never knew about and provoked revelations about humans and behaviour I’ve never realised before. I’ll never forget.

A tale of misery and hope under the most extreme conditions. The cruelty of man and the goodness are truly experienced
