What happens when a boxer finds chemistry with a geek?

Parker Brown can’t believe she needs to hire a fake boyfriend. When she landed her dream job in renewable energy, she thought she’d be entering a world at the forefront of progressive thinking. But the head boss prefers to promote employees who are “settled.” Thankfully, she’s found the perfect candidate, a fellow intellectual looking for some quick cash. What Parker gets is his protective big brother—Rhys Morgan. The tall, muscled ex-boxer with a foul mouth shows up just as her boss does, and now she’s stuck with the manipulative jerk.

Responsibility weighs heavily on Rhys. Now permanently out of the ring, he’s trying to hold together his late father’s gym and keep his younger brother, Dean, on the straight and narrow. To save Dean from himself, Rhys takes his place, ready to give this society girl a piece of his mind. Instead, he finds an opportunity. Even though they can hardly stand each other, posing as Parker’s boyfriend is a win-win deal. She gets to keep her job, and he’ll charm her star-struck boss into sponsoring his gym.

Problem is, they can barely keep their hands off each other. And what started as an easy deal isn’t so easy anymore. Because what future can a rough ex-boxer, afraid to open his heart, and a polished society geek, who has sworn off real relationships, possibly have?

They say opposites attract. These opposites are about to combust on impact.

Okay, so I listened to this book on Audio because Alex Kydd is the MMC and I was so impressed. I went into this audio thinking it was a boxing book, because of the boxing gloves on the front obviously. If you’ve read any of my posts or reviews, you may know this about me, but I don’t read the synopsis. I prefer to go in blind based solely on a quote, the trope, or in this books case the fact that Alex Kydd was the narrator. Well, and boxing was also a plus! But this really wasn’t a boxing story, it’s more about an ex boxer and his struggles with why he quit the sport he loved. He begins fake dating an engineer/environmentalist. But he quickly finds himself enamored with her and wondering if she could ever feel the same. With that being said, he does teach boxing to kids, and there is a boxing match in this book (past or present, who knows?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don’t want to give spoilers).

These two main characters were so opposite on so many things, but the things they had in common were adorable and mattered. It’s always the little things for me , I love the little things. So the fact that they both watch animal documentaries and their favorite movies are from the same series is the best!!

Their banter was adorable and exactly what you would expect from two completely opposite people. She is prim and proper and comes from money. She doesn’t cuss, graduated from MIT, and is now an engineer. He is more blue collar except that he was the heavy weight champion boxer, before he retired. Now he runs the gym that he is struggling to keep above water. And he throws out cuss words, like they are candy! Okay, so there really isn’t that much cussing, but that part of the story is funny!

She originally hires his younger brother to be her boyfriend for events but he wants his brother to get a real job, so he crashes the dinner and confronts her. Then he takes on the job instead mostly to piss her off, but he also sees an opportunity to find a sponsor for his gym.

This book only goes up hill, I’m typically not a huge fan of the really slow burn, but this one was soo good, it’s like it distracted me from the fact that there was no $pi(€y time going on. But it came eventually!

I enjoyed it, but the inner monologues from heroine and Hero, where repetitive and I'd rather have more banter between them.

I love the idea of this huge ex boxer with a petite Woman he just couldn't help himself from falling for, opposites atrac sort of an enemies to lovers vibe, but then the entire book is misunderstanding and the incessant yes, no from both character and their insecurities just knocking their attraction to one another to the background, I recommend for anyone that likes to read the inner musings of characters this story is for you.

Being a fan of both Kristen Callihan’s books and Samantha Young her books, I was very excited when I discovered that they had writing a book together. And the fact that it was about an ex-boxer and a nerdy woman made me even more curious about the story.

‘Outmatched’ is the story of Rhys Morgan and Parker Brown. Two persons who are very different from each other. Parker comes from a rich background and Rhys is an ex-boxer who likes to curse a lot and has big financial problems. The only thing that he does own is an old gym but that is in desperate need of a renovation . Parker is a nerdy woman who wants to keep the job that she loves by pretending to her big boss that she has a boyfriend and one thing that she doesn’t do is curse, not even in her own head.

They both may come from different worlds and have been brought up differently but both have their own personal problems. And because of those problems they make a pact with each other. Parker will pay Rhys to act like her boyfriend and that will solve both of their problems. But they never expected to fall for each other. What do they do now?

In this story you get both POV’s which I like very much. Both characters are great. Rhys may not be a gentleman or very sophisticated but he’s just what Parker needs in her life. Someone who makes her relax and has her back no matter what. Parker is this kind, intelligent, elegant woman. She’s a real people pleaser (especially her parents) in contrary to Rhys who doesn’t care what people think of him. I really liked the chemistry between them and their banter. This story is a really sweet, light, funny and easy to read story. There isn’t much drama in it.

So why didn’t I give it 5 stars? Well, having read books from both writers I expected a more emotional story maybe, not this super sweet story. I liked it but I just think that my expectations of this story where a bit different than what the story really was. So that made me feel like I missed something in the story. But that are just my personal feelings about this story.

So if you are looking for a sweet story to read than this is one for you.

Great plot, very well written ( 4 hands are better then two???), structured and deep protagonists and nice setting. I also loved that the two protagonists were not super young (above 30) with experience, and with interesting careers.
