In this offering, author, Susan Fleet, flips the script on NOPD's resolute homicide detective, Frank Renzi, making him and everyone that he loves, targets of Brian Devlin—a ruthless hood with a grudge from Boston's north end. Fresh out of the slammer, Devlin wastes no time in turning up the heat on a plan of revenge that simmered for 15 years while he rotted behind bars, courtesy of Renzi. Now, it's payback time. And make no mistake…"paybacks" are a bitch.

The story begins in New Orleans with the spray of gunfire and the senseless death of a ten year old boy—the unintended victim of a gangbanger drive-by. Renzi gets stuck with the sorry but routine investigation while the crime serves as a harbinger of fateful things about to befall him. With the turn of each page be prepared to get more than you bargained for as Renzi faces the challenge of his life, and events drag the dogged detective through an emotional wringer bringing the reader along for the unavoidable, gut wrenching ride.

As phase one of Devlin's revenge ensues, Renzi finds himself back in Boston where his life soon becomes buffeted between the familiar and the unimaginable—where an accidental death reveals a sinister deed and unanswered phone calls bespeak a nightmarish reality. Working surreptitiously to avoid alerting authorities, Renzi must draw upon every bit of his experience and instinct to pursue the as yet unknown to him, evil foe. With his mind reeling from anguish and fearing the worst, he contemplates a night of rekindled passion in the arms of an old flame. A revelation puts him hot on Devlin's trail.

Along the way, a tale of two families emerges complete with backstories to a cadre of characters providing brief respites from the otherwise ceaseless tension. Loyalty and betrayal become prominent themes as the fiendish plot continues to thicken. An anonymous tip propels Renzi into action. Hang in there for a daring rescue, a deadly shootout and a bloody showdown with guns ablaze amidst an apocalyptic setting. "Grave" consequences mark the end while a "flight" to freedom signals a new beginning.

This book has "Big Screen" written all over it, but don't wait for Hollywood to git its mitts on it. Get your hands on a copy today.

What does New Orleans and Boston have in common? Detective Frank Renzi, that's who. Susan Fleet's rock hard police detective from the Big Easy is at it again in another tense, suspenseful thriller. Ms. Fleet is turning out to be one of today's top mystery writers as she serves up another savory dish of Louisiana noir.

The story starts in New Orleans as Renzi tries to unravel a gangland shooting that leaves a 10-year old boy fatally wounded. Meanwhile, up in Boston, he is about to get caught in the crossfire from an old enemy. The man he put away fifteen years ago, Brian Devlin, is getting out of prison with one thought in mind: Revenge and making Renzi suffer.

He starts exacting his revenge by killing Frank's father in a made-to-look-like-road accident. Frank returns to Boston unaware that he is the target of the Boston Irish Mobster. Next, Devlin kidnappers Renzi's daughter.

As the tension mounts, the story reveals itself from different points of view from the good guys and the mobsters. It turns out loyal is only skin deep with the criminals. The tag line for Payback is Murder...Kidnapping...Revenge. How true. Two underlying themes in this thriller deal with loyalties and betrayal.
Susan has developed an important character in Frank Renzi. Her dialogue is pitch-perfect, and she captures the rich texture of both cities. This is book number nine in the series, and I can hardly wait for the next one.

Once again, thank you Susan for another superb Frank Renzi novel! Payback (the story) gives new meaning to "payback" (the expression), trust me. Susan's delightful imagination and suspenseful writing style, which I have come to anticipate and love with each chapter of each of her books, have entertained and challenged me once again with this dastardly plot. This being my ninth of ten Renzi novels....I am completely hooked. I have the next one (Foulshot) already by my bedside and I happen to know there is yet another one on the way. Keep 'em coming, Susan...no rest for the wicked!

Very good, nonstop action Crime Thriller! I’ve read the entire Series, and I love Susan Fleet’s writing style. Payback did not disappoint, and definitely hard to put down. I have been a Detective Frank Renzi fan from the beginning. The story plot flows very well, the characters seem to come to life. I especially love the setting, which is initially New Orleans, although later Boston. Since I live in N.O. I was very familiar with the locations, the culture and events, as described in this book. This one will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night, trying to guess what happens next. If you like nonstop action Crime Thrillers, don’t pass this one up, nor any of this Series!!!

This is the latest in the Frank Renzi series of detective novels and it's just great. Frank is a detective who literally takes the job home with him, even more so in this story about the death of his father and the kidnapping of his daughter. Although he now works in New Orleans, investigating the drug-related shooting of an innocent 10-year old, he tangles with a Boston-based bad guy from his past, an Irish mobster who wants payback for incarceration. With the help of his former partner, he races to find his daughter before her time runs out. It's an unexpected source that turns the tide for him. Don't miss this book!

As a fan and follower of Susan Fleet, I was able to get an early copy of this latest book in her Frank Renzi series. I have read and enjoyed all the Frank Renzi books and this one is right up there with the best. It is an all-action, fast-paced pageturner and I am disappointed to have finished it so quickly and now have a lengthy wait for the next book in the series. Ah, well!
The success of series like this is not just down to the stories but to the character development and Susan is an expert at this. Many of her old characters appear in Payback, but there is a new group of Irish characters, based in Boston, you will love, or love to hate.
    Enjoy.
