In the end, Fiona must choose between her family and her career and her choice will have ramifications for decades to come.

November Bean

Cosmo Hill

Cosmo Hill

A hard childhood in the cult prepared him for twenty years in prison. Cosmo Hill knows he'll spend the rest of his life alone because no one would want to deal with his mountain of challenges.

If Cosmo Hill is ever going to find happiness, he'll have to risk everything.

USA TODAY bestselling author Joann Keder spent her formative years (40) on the vast Great Plains of Nebraska, where the sky is endless, and the winters build character. After sixteen years of teaching piano and enduring countless renditions of "I forgot to practice," she returned to school and earned a master's degree in creative writing. A mid-life move to the Pacific Northwest inspired her to shake up her priorities and focus on crafting small-town stories full of heart, humor, and a touch of quirk. With her supportive family cheering her on—and occasionally asking if she’s really working—she plans to continue until there are no more books inside her head.

Keder pens a magnificent story in Welcome to Piney Falls. I have read work from this author before, and I really enjoyed it. Lanie is a great character, and she becomes as intrigued as the reader into finding out the truth. A very well-written story, and I enjoyed it. A definite attention grabber. The thrills and intrigue is written clearly and the characterizations are engrossing. Told in first person, the story has an edge and great perspective. The title drew me in, but the story made me stay. The author's technique of intense characters and great plotlines is a gift. It's a great story to follow and try to figure out what will happen next. This is supposed to be the first book in a series, so I look forward to whatever comes next. I look forward to reading more by this author. This book is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews.

This book was provided at no cost as an advanced reader copy and my review is completely voluntary. This was a fascinating story of a unique small town full of quirky characters and a side of mystery. Lanie is a big city woman with Control issues who sets out to write the story of a small town that changed it's name. There are plenty of twists and turns in this story before reaching the Who submit conclusion. Totally worth the read.

I wasn’t happy with the writers style- found the beginning confusing and didn’t like the main character. I am not a fan of going back and forth in time so that was annoying too. I kept reading to try to figure out what was actually happening. The story is very strange and convoluted so I plowed through anyway because I like to see if it gets better. It was interesting enough to get me to the end.

I remain, and shall continue to be, a fan of Joann Keder's amazing stories! Welcome to Piney Falls has relatable characters, a richly detailed backdrop, and a smooth narrative flow that makes the book a truly enjoyable read.

Main character Lanie is full of surprises. Her character development over the course of the story is delightful to watch. I think my favorite thing (without giving too much away) is how she goes from needing to be in complete control of every situation to just rolling with life as it comes at her. Her natural curiosity and determination bring about a shocking but happy ending for her new friends, and she ends up making a positive difference in multiple other lives.

This is a charming mystery that has a little of everything: romance, intrigue, pastries, murder, cults, and hiking in the PNW. If you're a fan of Keder's other books, you'll love this one, too. I zoomed right through to the end, and I'm already excited to see Piper Moonlight make her debut in Piney Falls.

Her house burned down to the ground and forced to take a hard look at her life, Lanie Andrews decides to take her creative writing assignment on the road to find the answer to her question about this historical nuance she discovered and gain perspective. Off she goes to Oregon to a small town in the middle of nowhere. Originally called Flanagan, the town changed its name to Piney Falls with no explanation some time ago.

Keder shifts from the history of Flanagan to current day Piney Falls and Lanie; from one of the Flanagan sister's journal of their lives as the two Scotswomen marry Americans, traveling across the ocean generations before. An experience to be sure as the two couples establish a cannery, have children, and build homes. The shift in perspective from those initial days and the Flanagan sisters to Lanie's experience as she tries to find out what prompted the name change leads to her questioning why so many residents of Piney Falls are taking their lives by jumping off the top of the Falls.

Stick with it and the rhythm builds, characters are well-developed, and tension in the current day Piney Falls builds. For sure, everyone Lanie talks to has a history and their own secrets, with a cult history adding to the mix. It takes time for Keder to set the stage and for Lanie to realize she went to Piney Falls, not to write the story but to grow and reflect on her life as she lived it and how she wants to live it in the future.

This is the first in a series, though the obvious mysteries Lanie unraveled are all resolved. Lanie is a flawed character, but emerges in the end a much better person - not quite so controlling, but still a strong female protagonist. Well-written, unique writing style, and well-developed characters, this was an interesting read. I look forward to reading more from Keder.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in the hopes that I would post an honest review. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.

I loved reading this book. The author, Joann Keder has a delightful sardonic wit that makes me smile. The story is a compelling adventure into a fictional Pacific Northwest community, with colorful and vivid descriptions of the landscape. I can see Ms. Keder shares a love of nature with me, and she sure can create a storyline that blends the past with the future with seamless timing. We all know what it is like to have our lives turned upside down by a temporary tragedy, but to watch Lanie stumble through finding herself as she discovers the history of the town is a delightful escape from today's world.

I gave this rating because at half way the book was boring ,too historical and with an antique Scottish language. In the second half the book started to be interesting as all the events unfolded in a easier way.

I did not enjoy reading this book. The story was weak and predictable. The switching of the story from the past to the present was confusing . I don't want to read another book by this author because it was hard to follow. What do you think?
