When she arrives, she finds employment under the watchful eye of Cosmo Hill, also a former Fallen Branch member, at his bakery. Cosmo doesn't trust Piper or her story. He enlists the help of his fiancé , marketing wonder and super sleuth Lanie Anders to uncover the truth of Piper's past.

Lanie and Cosmo soon discover there are still shocking secrets buried within the layers of the former cult. As those secrets come to light, those who keep them will stop at nothing to stay hidden. The ugly truth of Fallen Branch will force Lanie, Cosmo and Piper to make unthinkable choices to save themselves and the life they know in Piney Falls.

USA TODAY bestselling author Joann Keder spent her formative years (40) on the vast Great Plains of Nebraska, where the sky is endless, and the winters build character. After sixteen years of teaching piano and enduring countless renditions of "I forgot to practice," she returned to school and earned a master's degree in creative writing. A mid-life move to the Pacific Northwest inspired her to shake up her priorities and focus on crafting small-town stories full of heart, humor, and a touch of quirk. With her supportive family cheering her on—and occasionally asking if she’s really working—she plans to continue until there are no more books inside her head.

I love this book! The plot was exciting and kept me guessing the entire way through. I loved the intrigue.
I especially enjoy how the author brings the characters to life with her writing. It makes me want to visit the town and meet them.
Upon finishing this book, I went straight to the next in the series. A few times, I was sure I knew how it would turn out, but Ms. Keder surprised me! (I'm not sure why I keep trying to guess, haha.)
In short, I really enjoyed this book, the well described town, and most of all, the wonderful characters she brings to life. I love a series that makes you excited for the next book.
I am an avid reader, but I was starting to feel that I was reading the same type of books and was in a bit of a rut, even though the books were good. This author delivers a nice change for me, and I look forward to more.

Even though the Fallen Branch commune has been gone for years, it's not forgotten by either its members or the townspeople. Lanie is trying to help the town move forward by marketing the old cult homesite to a hotel chain. She hopes this will bring jobs and prosperity to the town, and relegate Fallen Branch to history. Not everyone is on board on either side of the divide. Add in some family history and a young woman who was designated to be the cult's next leader, and you get lots of trouble brewing. The plot of this episode in the story is intricate with many layers and tendrils that eventually all make sense and pull you towards the final scenes. This series has incredible psychological drama in it without turning into horror or or a depressing read. Kudos to the author for her world and character building.

What a wonderful new adventure by Author Joann Keder. This is the second book in the new series set in Piney Falls, Oregon. It you loved the first book, you are sure to find this one even more exciting. Some of the same favorite characters return; Lanie, the detective, Cosmo, her bakery boyfriend, Cedar, Cosmo’s sister and of course, quirky Vem, who is always color coordinated and indulges in moaning and howling. The newest character to enter the scene is Piper Moonlight. She was designated as the next leader of the cult. When Zion, the leader of the cult, disappears and followers disperse, another cult arises. And they are after Piper to be their leader. There are so many surprising twists and turns as well as an unexpected conclusion. You will just have to read this one to get all the details!

When the heir apparent to the Broken Branch Cult returns to Piney Falls, we find that she awakens memories and divisions which had been put aside. Piper with her sweet demeanor and youthful eagerness to live a ‘normal’ life, soon wins over Lanie Anders and her neighbor Vem. Others in the community still don’t quite trust that she wasn’t sent by Fallen Branch members to restart the cult. In the meantime Lanie and Cedar are working to sell the cult‘s property to a Resort Development company. Through Ms Keder’s storytelling we see what Piper has experienced, and admire her resilience. As usual the twists and turns of the plot keep the reader intrigued to the end, which is an exciting surprise and leaves one to anticipate another Piney Falls mystery!
