- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've been reading Shann for over a year (two novels and two short stories). As I've stated repeatedly in my reviews, I think he is very gifted. He's got it all: voice, pace, depth, and plotting. What more could you want?
Yes, here in Perfect Peace, there's violence, a lot of blood (at one point), and some seedy, repugnant characters. But the overall storyline concerns decent people, with decent lives, who are trying to do their best, given their challenges. I especially enjoyed DI Abbot, a crusty, opinionated former Glaswegian. I liked him, believed him, respected him. He and his sidekick DS Parlour would make an excellent basis for a television show.
I was also fascinated by the deeply-flawed, suspended cop Tony Hall, cousin of restaurateur Colin Forbes, the man who washed ashore. Tony and his brother Davey, separately, search for answers to Colin's death. As do, of course, Abbot and Parlour.
As the story unfolds, more characters emerge and many subplots develop, resulting in one of the most layered and absorbing novels I've read in a long time.
Top notch.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseP.J. Shann is a fresh voice in British Crime. I enjoy his short stories very much. I decided to spend another $1.29 and see if he could write a novel. He can, quite well. He does it with vivid detail and honest dialogue.
A tightly woven subplot does a lot to keep the main story brisk and on target. Through it all red blooded characters soon flesh out and develop to reveal body and soul. Lots of human bondage and baggage all over the place. People and plot lace together after a mutilated and unidentified corpse washes ashore near an amusement park, I was hooked. Discover the skill and fine style of this author for summer. This is a five star book. D.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnd love it I did. Start to finish. The character development is outstanding. The mystery was still a mystery to the very end. Very touching story surrounding the murderous main plot. Subtle side plots were very satisfying also. Then everything brought skillfully together in a very suspense filled ending. I think I'll go read the other one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended - up there with the best of thriller writers
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first book I have read by P J Shann and I am very impressed. He writes exceedingly well and, something which is difficult to do, writes believable dialogue and manages to construct fully rounded characters in the readers mind, in particular the female characters. I haven't read the first book in the series, so would have liked a more in depth introduction to the main detective character, and compared to the other characters in the book, Abbot is somewhat less believable. But this is a minor quibble compared to the first class quality of the writing and the plot. I didn't guess the ending at all, and unlike so many thriller writers, the author has all the clues seductively placed from the start. For fans of a darker style of thriller writing then this book has it all. The ending is superb in itself. I will definitely recommend this book to my friends and invest in more of P J Shann's work.

4.0 out of 5 stars BRIGHTON Rocks
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRefreshingly concentrates on complex human relationships, rather than the usual police procedure. As much a novel as a taut thriller. All set against the salty tang of Brighton:a town that still looks like it is helping police with their enquiries.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of British crime!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love the way this novel started with immediate action. No pages of unneeded or unwanted narrative, just straight into the story; and what a story! Plenty of `red herrings' in the well crafted and intricate plot and wonderfully believable characters, all of whom have their own personal issues to overcome.
Subplots are skillfully woven through the main theme and are brought together in a vivid and shocking climax. A true British crime mystery written with style and integrity.
Another winner from P J Shann.
