- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2024I thoroughly enjoyed reading POW: The only way to survive is to escape by Eric Helm. The series follows a group of Special Forces soldiers from A-Camp A-555 during missions in Vietnam and Cambodia. This book follows the storyline from book 1, where First Sergeant Fetterman has a vendetta against a Chinese soldier who is aiding and training a group of NVA and VC soldiers. The enemy missions to overrun A555 have failed to date, but the Chinese Major has a plan to ambush the SF groups and capture the Americans. It turns out to be a devastating battle where three American teams are wiped out, and three Americans are captured.
General Vo has no intent of moving the American POWs to North Vietnam. Instead, he finds amusement in torturing them with the intent of killing them when he's done. The remaining SF soldiers are intent on rescuing their POW friends, but first, they must find them. Will they die in captivity or be rescued?
There is edge-of-your-seat suspense that keeps readers captivated from the start to the finish. I've read several books in this series and have enjoyed them all.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2021I really enjoyed this book. Lots of action, good plot. And great characters. If I was to say one negative thing it would be that the ending came together a little to quickly for me and I was looking for a more one on one confrontation between Fetterman and general Vo.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2009This is #2 in the GOLD EAGLE series VIETNAM: GROUND ZERO, a GOLD EAGLE series of books from a couple decades back in the 1980s written under the 'house name' of Eric Helm, but the author is given as Kevin Randle. In the case of this book, however, another co-author is also listed, Bob Cornett.
The action concerns the U.S. Army Special Forces Camp A-555, or Triple Nickle, which is situated a few klicks from the Cambodian border. The NVA and Viet Cong want to capture several Special Forces personel to interrogate and torture. They succeed in doing this yet all does not go according to their plans, as the Special Force men are determined to turn the tables on them, and do. The captured men are never taken out of Vietnam into Cambodia, as the NVA want the search teams to believe, but are marched around to confuse all concerned parties. Though escape would seem impossible Master Sgt. Fetterman holds very different ideas.
We are introduced to Captain 'Mack' Gerber, Master Sgt. Tony Fetterman, and newspaper correspondent Robin Morrow, with all three people appearing in most of the books. These three will provide transition from one novel to another, which in total number of novels in the series stands at 33 books with 5 super books.
Any reader having interest in Vietnam would be advised to read books in this series due to both their interesting subject matter but also for the fairly actual portrait of Nam on the ground. Some books have maps showing the area of activities and many books also have a small glossary at rear of book to help with military jargon and slang. Being a Vietnam era vet much of the language is familiar to me but every once in awhile I need rely on the glossary, as I did not serve in the Army.
Whatever your reason for picking up any book in this GOLD EAGLE Vietnam: Ground Zero, your reading enjoyment will last long beyond the book.
Semper Fi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good book.
On a patrol three of Gerbers men are taken prisoners by the VC. Taken to a secret camp, the are tortured by the sadistic Vo. One manages to escape, not spoiling the book by saying who the prisoners are, and accidentally meets up with Krung a colleague. They get back to camp eventually, and a major search is on for the two remaining prisoners before they get taken across the border to Cambodia. Do they succeed in saving the two men, or are they to late to save their lives? Epic book, read to find out, it's worth it.
