*Winner of the 2019 This Is Horror Awards ‘Novella of the Year’*

A coming-of-age tale of revenge and survival that explores a friendship and the desperate measures taken to ensure they stay united, held together by the scars that bind them.

After being held against their will in a house used for trafficking, three girls plan their escape.

Alex:
A hardened goth-punk who’s convinced she’s a vampire with a penchant for blood.
Stacia: A seventeen-year-old raised by an alcoholic mother, her fellow captives the only family she’s ever truly had.
Kammie: The youngest of the three—a mute who finds solace in a houseplant.

But does life outside the house offer the freedom they’d envisioned? Or is it too late, the scars too deep?

This contemporary Suspense Thriller / Horror novella with an all-female cast is the perfect read for fans of
Robert R. McCammon, Stephen King, and Jack Ketchum.

Proudly represented by
Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

Interview with the author:

What makes this Suspense Thriller so special?

Taking into consideration the predicament of the three girls in the book, rather than reading as a typical thriller where most of the time is spent in a cat & mouse chase or building to the climax of escape, the book focuses on the psychological aftermath of the trauma and explores the bittersweet feeling of being free and whether the joy of freedom can be truly celebrated alone. Also, there aren't enough female-centric coming-of-age stories out there.

Tell us more about your lead character.

Stacia is a 17-year-old, everyday, teenage girl who was raised in a very dysfunctional home where the front door is left revolving by myriad of temporary father figures brought home by her alcoholic mother. She's never truly felt what it means to be loved, until she meets the other girls in the house on Seaside Lane.

Why should readers give your work a try?

Because I try my hardest to write stories using concepts that I feel haven't been done before. Originality is my primary concern, followed by a huge dose of empathy for characters the reader will care for deeply, darkness, and often times hope, but never in an unrealistic manner.

Black Wattle’s residents are plunged into a nightmare of infection and blood-curdling transformations. Perfect for fans of middle-grade horror, spooky adventures, and spine-chilling mysteries, Scareville is an unmissable series that will keep young readers on the edge of their seats. Three stories. One terrifying truth: we are not alone! In this supernatural creature feature, the fight against nature’s deadliest predators becomes a fight against something far darker lurking in the depths. A suicidal nudist strolls into traffic. An eccentric Buddhist claims he can occupy other people's bodies. All the while, whispers of a new form of entertainment blow through town.

A story about Resilience and Hope in the face of soul crushing horror
On matters of horror fiction and what should or should not be defined as such, nobody gets the last word. For some people, a horror story is only as good as its ability to scare. For me, the horror genre is a spectrum, and feeling scared falls somewhere on that emotional spectrum along with a host of other feelings. Judging a book based on its ability to belong in a genre, employing the sole criteria of fear, is too subjective and limiting in my opinion. Chad Lutzke’s new book, The Pale White, deals with the subject of sex trafficking and the emotional, physical and mental effects it has on its victims. I’ll let discerning readers decide for themselves if that sounds horrific enough to be considered horror fiction. For this reader, I find the subject matter terrifying. To be honest, in the hands of just any author, sex trafficking is taboo enough to be the kiss of death. I’m not going to enthusiastically anticipate a deep dive into the disturbing elements of what happens to victims who are sexually abused. But Chad Lutzke isn’t any author and his audience trusts him. I trust him. And so I did anticipate this book because I know that Lutzke would handle this sensitive subject with respect and dignity. The Pale White offers readers a short time spent with three main protagonists that you are immediately drawn to and invested in. This is the magic of Lutzke’s writing. What might take other writers the length of a novel to do, Lutzke manages in a novella of one hundred pages. It’s something about the authenticity of his writing style and the speed in which readers experience that empathetic connection through the dramatic events typically kicking off on page one. Alex, Stacia and Kammie have been kidnapped, held captive and forced to perform sex acts to paying customers. They have been in one location for an undisclosed amount of time. Their captor is named Doc. There’s a temptation to read too fast because the story is so compelling; the pages easily fly by but if you blink, you’ll miss everything. You’ll miss how each girl deals with her victimhood in remarkably distinct ways. You’ll forget to ponder the significance of vampires. The fact that a quaint beach house in an idyllic location is actually a prison…the prisoners enduring unspeakable tortures at the hands of their abusers. I think that because this is a novella and it’s easy to read, one could hastily assume it felt rushed or should have been longer, but those assumptions do a disservice to the magic of good storytelling. It’s this reader’s opinion that Lutzke knows exactly what he’s capable of and how much time or how many pages he needs to accomplish what he sets out to do. I loved this tale. I felt like it was perfect in every way and I especially loved the ending. Actually, correction: I needed that ending, and I’m grateful Lutzke gave it to his readers. The Pale White is painful and soul crushing. But it’s also a story about resilience and hope in the face of unspeakable horrors. My favorite kind of story.

Lutzke can pack more emotion in a few pages than most authors can in hundreds. He has a unique ability to pull on the reader's heart strings with a straight forward, unembellished story. I have so much appreciation for an author who doesn't feel the need to pad his stories or repeat himself continuously. Lutzke lays the story out in a simple form and respects that his readers understand and empathize. This makes for a most satisfactory reading experience. Once again Lutzke demonstrates that even in the most horrendous of situations, hope can and does live on. Great story once again.

“The thought of freedom brings no comfort... But we’re not alone. We’re sisters. No, the bond is stronger. We’re The Pale White. And there’s nothing we wouldn’t do for one another.”

This is horror. Horror that is real, raw and never going to go away. Horror that is true and many cases considered to be “taboo.” Chad Lutzke brings front and center the physical and mental affects of sex trafficking. Not one ounce of this topic was left out so the reader can feel the abuse, control, pain, desperation and yearning these girls experience.

Alex, Stacia and Kammie are Doc’s possession and held captive in a windowless attic. Alex and Stacia were taken by way of a choreographed kidnapping. Stacia is newer of the three while Alex has been under Doc’s control over a decade and Kammie is a child. Each girl sold nightly like a menu item for their “clients” to have their way with them and rewarded with books and meals. One night, after many days of starvation as punishment, Alex finally makes her move to free them from their hell, but what happens next? What if freedom is a trick? Stacia urges Alex to choose wisely and leave, but Alex is beyond broken and blinded by revenge.

This novella is riveting. I forced myself to read it slowly but I was compelled to frantically see what happens next. This story is short but my heart ached for each one of these girls, especially Kammie. The innocence lost, the pain, the rage, the hate, the sadness... you can feel it and it makes you hope they get their happily ever after.

“When you’re just as lost, just as scared, it’s impossible to carry the weight of another. To stay positive, to wear a smile that doesn’t mean a thing.”

Sometimes I wonder if I was skipped when the emotional gene was being handed out in the womb because I rarely have the heartstrings tugged but the ending. It was needed and I’m grateful for it. Do not contemplate, just read it. You’ll be happy you did.

I want to rate this lower but something is stopping me.

This story has some highs and lows. At times it reads great, at others it’s near cartoony and odd. The subject matter overall is dealt with tastefully.

The subjectivity in writing and reading are things I love. Someone’s favorite author, someone else might think they’re rubbish.

I may try another piece from the author, but this just didn’t do it for me. I went into it really wanting to like it and kept an open mind. That subjectivity comes into play and this overall just was not for me.

I would lastly say that the few scenes where physical actions happen . . . I had a hard time finding believable. They felt too rushed.

Anyway, if the story summary intrigues you, check it out. Not a super long read.

With one book Chad Lutzke has become one of my "I'll read anything they do" authors. This book takes a really difficult subject matter and just makes it so real and poignant and beautiful. I felt uneasy and nervous throughout and the ending was so deserved. Loved it. While this book is in the horror genre it's not exactly what comes to mind when one typically thinks of 'horror'. It horrifies you with a gut twist. I'd recommend it to not just horror fans but anyone looking for a fast-paced, engaging read.

This wasn't quite what I expected but was good nonetheless. Bit on the short side, but is a story of redemption for these girls. You get hints and pieces of what they've been though but it isn't explicit, which in many ways is more effective.
Enjoyable and well written. Would recommend.

The Pale White opens on three young women trapped in an attic. Used for sexual slavery, they have to pluck up the courage to fight against their captor and escape; but even if they make it out of their attic prison, doesn't mean they'll have the courage to leave the house.
Beautifully written, rewarding and compelling, The Pale White perfectly balances a story filled with both horror and childhood tenderness.
