Pangalax (The Veya Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
After an unexpected attack claims her mom, seventeen-year-old Veya is forced to abandon the only home she's ever known and the only boy she’s ever loved to make a new life on Pangalax, a US space station.
Heartbroken, angry, and homesick, she resents her dad’s decision to move and his demand to hide her unique abilities. As she suspected, appearing normal proves to be nearly impossible, especially around Kye, a way-too-handsome officer who is determined to break through her walls.
But can he be trusted? Can anyone be trusted?
As Veya uncovers the deep, dark secrets of Pangalax, her very existence becomes threatened. Only one person can save her.
Is she willing to forget the past and trust him with her life?

Pangalax (The Veya Trilogy Book 1) by SM Koz is the first book in a young adult science fiction trilogy. Aveyana (Veya) is forced to follow her dad onto the US space station Pangalax after the unexpected tragic attack that killed her mother. More important than the home she has to leave behind is the life she is leaving behind, and the boy that she loves. Veya resents her dad for forcing her into this new life, and hates the fact that he thinks she can hide her unique abilities. She can't pretend to be normal anymore, especially around Kye, a handsome officer who wants to get to know the real Veya and make her forget about the boy she left behind on Earth. Veya wants to put down her walls, but as she learns more about the truth of Pangalax, she worries that no one can be trusted. If the wrong person finds out about her powers, it could be the end for her as well.
This is a really interesting science fiction story that offers so much more than just great world building. This story has twists and turns, plenty of action, and a nice mystery filled with political intrigue. The romance is authentic and natural, as well as the anger and hate that Veya feels toward her father and other surrounding characters. The secondary characters are fleshed out and well written, giving this story a nice boost of authenticity that keeps the reader engaged.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2016For all of you who shy away from science fiction stories- this would be a great starter. It has enough sci-fi to keep your brain turning but really is about character relationships and growing up.
Veya is a fun character- and acts her age, even though you might want to shake her now and again. Kye is a bit more sophisticated but still had enough flaws to make him fun.
The best part about the story is the rapid pace and mystery. This does end on a continuation cliff hanger, but is satisfying enough to be happy with this book ( I mean, if you have no sense of wanting completion of the larger picture...)
Just get the book and clear your day so you can spend your time having fun with this amazing read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2016Intriguing and engaging YA/SF story, the first volume in a series. Koz introduces a number of interesting elements, and aliens, of which at this point we learn a little about the N'hreetians. Our Veya is a girl, half-human and half-N'hreetian, with amazing but limited powers. Her story is one of mystery and crisis, in fact she seems to stumble from one crisis into the next, while the reader wrestles with what is *really* going on. (One of the great things about this book is the realistic limited nature of Veya's understanding and guesswork.) Of course there are boys, I mean young men, in her life... especially Kye!
Characterization is very good, plot fascinating and the pace is fairly quick. As a life-long SF fan I found the mirror earth concept a little unconvincing, but otherwise the SF setting was great, and the multi-strand politics very realistic. Because the book is only volume one, of course there's somewhat of a cliffhanger ending, but enough has been resolved to make it a reasonably satisfying read. I just can't wait for the story to continue...
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2015This is a must read rather you are you like this type of book or not. It was an amazing read! I love the characters, I love the story line, it is very well written, and very enjoyable. There is action, romance, sci-fi, and so much more. I highly recommend you read this book, you will love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2015This is one of those YA books that can appeal to adult readers as well, especially if you like a feisty, stubborn young protagonist who’s falling in love against her own better judgment. The story is about 17 year old Aveyana, (Veya, for short,) who’s determined to find and save her mother after she was abducted from their home planet. Her mother is N'hreetian. Her father is human. And Veya is a hybrid who looks human but has the very interesting powers of her mother’s planet. She’s angry when her father takes her to Pangalax, a space station, where she has to hide her superior physical abilities as she tries to fit in with the humans. She breaks a lot of rules in her quest to find out what happened to her mom, and, in the process, uncovers secrets and political intrigue that pose very real danger to her and her father.
The first person, present tense narration is believable and makes the story feel more compelling. Veya’s stubbornness and teen-aged mixed emotions come through as she struggles to save her mother and tries to resist her growing attraction to a handsome officer who helps train her. You can feel how torn she is about her feelings for Kye because of the boyfriend she left behind on N'hreen.
From the get-go it’s obvious something is rotten on Pangalax but the story keeps you guessing about who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy. A fast-paced read with lots of action and a cliff-hanger ending that leaves you wondering how it will play out in book 2 and book 3.
I was given an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest, non-reciprocal review.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2015I was hesitant in reading this book because I am not a science fiction, paranormal or urban fantasy kind of reader. I was told it was light a Sci-fi so I gave it a shot. It took me a while to get into it because growing up, we only had one TV in the living room so coming from a large family and being the youngest I had to watch what the older siblings wanted most often. But dad had major control. I used to have to watch Star Trek and I hated it with a passion because of my brother. This book reminds me somewhat of it because they are from Earth but living on a space station and fighting aliens.
I really enjoyed that the focus was more so on the teenagers and them learning life skills to help protect Earth and the space station. Yes the adults are the controlling aspect of the events happening but the kids are the ones trying to help each other to overcome the problems.
I like the budding friendship/relationship that develops between Veya and Kye even though she had to leave her on again/off again boyfriend Tash back at home on her mother's home planet. I can't wait to read the remainder of the trilogy to see what happens for Veya, Kye and Tash.
I recommend you give this book a read. I think you will get into the story of Veya and Kye and the turn of events that happen. See how the families make out after the plotting and planning is figured out. Let's see what happens with Veya, Kye and Tash. Waiting on book 2!
