The Parting Years: 1963-74 (Cecil Beaton's Diaries Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 54 ratings

A classic six-volume memoir of the twentieth century, spanning through the Second World War, the Golden Age of Hollywood and the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Sir Cecil Beaton (1904 –1980) was an English fashion, portrait and war photographer, painter, diarist and Academy Award-winning stage and costume designer.

Beaton’s sixth and final volume covers 1963-74. It follows Beaton's encounters with the youth of the swinging sixties but also the parting of many of his lifelong friends.

In Marrakesh he meets Mick Jagger and in England David Hockney comes to stay. There are many vivid and affectionate portraits: Garbo in Greece, as bewitching as ever; Philippe and Pauline de Rothschild in their little principality at Mouton; Picasso, rather shrivelled but full of vitality and hope; Diana Cooper defying the passing years with indomitable energy.

THE PARTING YEARS is the sixth volume of Cecil Beaton’s Diaries, a personal memoir of the twentieth century, covering famous artists and photographers, political figures, socialites, the rich & famous and movie stars.

Perfect for fans of THE CROWN, LOVE, CECIL, fashion photography, artist’s memoirs, and twentieth-century history.

    Format: Paperback
Cecil Beaton's diaries offer a fascinating glimpse into the life of a highly creative and influential figure in the world of art and fashion. Spanning several decades, from the 1920s to the 1970s, the diaries cover a vast range of topics, from Beaton's personal relationships and social life to his work as a photographer and costume designer.

One of the most striking things about the diaries is Beaton's candidness. He doesn't hold back when it comes to discussing his own flaws and insecurities, or those of the people around him. This can be both refreshing and uncomfortable to read, as Beaton's observations can be sharp and cutting at times.

However, what really makes the diaries worth reading is Beaton's incredible eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of the people and events he witnessed. Whether he's describing a glamorous party or a day spent sketching in the countryside, Beaton's writing is always vivid and evocative.

Overall, the Cecil Beaton diaries are a fascinating and illuminating read for anyone interested in the worlds of art, fashion, and society in the 20th century. They offer a unique perspective on a fascinating period in history, and provide a valuable glimpse into the mind of one of its most talented and complex figures.
