People v Money: Big Business, Judicial Corruption, and You Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 51 ratings

What happens when you combine The Big Short and Erin Brockovich? Like those non-fiction blockbusters, People v Money reads like a Hollywood movie script.

Mark Stopa, like the protagonists in those films, is both famous and infamous in the Florida legal community – a hero and a villain, depending on whom you ask. To thousands of Floridians, Mark was a voice of hope in the aftermath of the Great Recession, striving to prevent banks from effectuating the largest transfer of wealth in modern U.S. history. To the banking industry, Mark was Enemy #1. Yet this book is not about Mark Stopa.

People v Money gives an unprecedented, first-hand account of widespread corruption at the highest levels of Florida government. From “America’s best foreclosure defense attorney” to investigative journalist to author, Mark’s narrative takes you on an epic journey through that corruption. Just when you think the corruption can’t go any deeper, it does – from trial courts to the Florida Supreme Court, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Governor’s Mansion! Before you’re done, you’ll see why readers are calling People v Money “the biggest exposé on the judicial system of our lifetime.” You will be shocked. You will be horrified. You will be outraged. Most importantly, you will be inspired to fight back.

Income inequality is more pronounced than at any point in American history. The wealthiest 1% own more than the bottom 90%. Nearly eighty percent of the public live paycheck to paycheck. Two hundred million Americans are suffering in silence, victims of government officials who use their positions in office to align with Corporate America and get rich. Indeed, the American economy is rigged in favor of big business because “our” elected officials make it that way. People v Money offers rare insights into how the rigged economy came to be, along with unique solutions to curb the corruption.

Join Mark on his journey. Be inspired to help create a system of government that works for everyone, not just the rich and powerful. Together, We The People can restore our democracy. Will you help? Yes, you.

WOW! Perseverance in the face insurmountable odds to get the truth out there!
Not only is this author an obvious champion of the people, he has shown is gross detail how corruption cannot and should not be tolerated. This book is a 'fight the good fight' story of unbridled perseverance in the face insurmountable odds to shed light on the fraudulent conduct by those in power. I commend the author for risking everything to get the truth out there.

Truth and facts can never exists in darkness, Kudos to Mark Stopa for their illumination in this barn burner of a expose' of the corrupt, arrogant, dishonest, despicable and amoral, wearing the robes Pilate and Jezebel, and masquerading as Samuel and Solomon. Their greed have blinded their eyes as bribery always will do, as they consider their pension and wealth as more sacred than the law and constitution they swore to uphold and the less fortunate as their instrument to achieve their goals. This book is riveted with Truth and facts fully documented and irrefutable, and is a reminder as to why the CFPB, ( Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, ( the brain child of Elizabeth Warren ) came into being during the Obama administration. . The many who have fought this unjust and corrupt system and its enablers now have a way, and weapon to fight with; where as before as the old Seer said ' If you do not know who your enemy is, You do not know who you are fighting" Thanks to Mark Stopa we now know who we are fighting and the robes of Samuel and Solomon can no longer disguise the Jezebel and Pilate they are. . Thank you Mark Stopa for not only being a champion for the less fortunate in the Court House , but also for those who will now know who they are fighting or will be fighting.

People v Money unveils the cloak of graft and corruption that permeates the Florida Judicial System. This book will blow your socks off as you become aware of how the “Banksters” thru their super pacs have infiltrated the Florida Legislature which then has held the Judicial Branch hostage. They have done this by requiring Judges to ignore the rights of people in order to quickly close court cases on the foreclosure calendar to benefit the banks. This in turn resulted in hefty pay raises for those Judges. Written by an attorney, in an attorneys cadence, Mark Stopa tells it all, every minute detail; he provides links to evidence that backs up everything he uncovers. There are even links to video. It’s a multi-dimensional book for the enjoyment of any type of reader.

The content will absolutely make you sick. I had to keep putting the book down because it violated my sensibilities. This story is about foreclosures but the systems used to close those cases while pouncing all over innocent people are becoming systems in other court rooms. The power of Judges is out of control because, as Mark will show you, there is no accountability and the Judges know it. They are able to rule however they please, without regard to the rules that they are supposed to govern by. And they are able to work until they are 75 years old no matter their competency. Judges as you will find out don’t get voted out of office or fired. How shameful is that?

Mark also provides the reader with a call to action. He wants to correct the system but it’s so out of control that it will take a large contingent of people screaming “We have had enough!” To effect any change.
Read this book and then join the movement! I know I will be.

I have had first hand experience with many of the players in this tell-all about Florida Courts. Although the text sometimes repeats itself, it does open the curtain which obscures the courts from the view of most people. The actions occurring behind the veil reveal Florida Courts are at best partially compromised by greed and at worst, “justice is for sale” to the highest bidder. Regardless, the Florida Courts need to enforce judicial cannons of ethics and require the transparency and accountability which appear to be overlooked.

My hope would be that this book gets read and understood by those who can effect change and improve this system.

I would recommend this book as a must read for all judges, attorneys, and litigants having any current or future cases in Florida.

The following is only a small sample of the proof contained in Marks book.

[Testimony from a Florida judge, Spring, 2018]

Q: Do you have any familiarity with the state court budget being tied to foreclosures?

    A: Yes.

Q: Can you describe that dynamic?

A: Well, Judge Allan is probably familiar with this. It has been discussed at some of the meetings we have had. Our budget was based on foreclosure filing fees, and there was a lot of emphasis by the Legislature. [T]aking care of and getting rid of foreclosures. I mean, to the point where they talked about bonuses — we hadn’t had any raises in almost ten years, and they talked about giving bonuses based on closure rates of cases and such. And our budget was based on foreclosure fees.

Q: So judges hadn’t gotten pay raises for almost ten years, and there was a discussion about getting pay raises based upon foreclosures?

    A: Based on case closures.

Q: What do you mean by “case closures,” Your Honor?

A: Well, closing — getting a case closed.

Q: And as part of this, was there anything about judges being individually rated based on case closures or anything like that?

A: It was rated in that if your docket showed a lot of case closures, then you could probably get a one-time bonus. And if you didn’t, you wouldn’t. There was even talk about making less. It was like they grade the teachers. A lot of people don’t like it. If the kids test well, you give the teachers a raise or a bonus. If they don’t, they don’t get it. It’s that sort of concept.

Q: Is there anything about that which you believe may have contributed to my interactions with some judges?

A: Well, I think that, yes, in that we are constantly harped on to close cases, and it would have been easy — it’s easier — foreclosure cases are a whole lot easier if the people come in self-represented because nothing happens. You know, there is nobody arguing, right, because the people don’t know what to say.
[Judges] aren’t allowed to tell [homeowners] what is wrong with a case, and that’s a whole lot easier for everybody. The banks, the courts. I mean, they move through a lot quicker. Their cases are closed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighting up the darker side of mortgage foreclosures in Florida
Reviewed in Canada on October 30, 2019
This is a riveting account of the profiteering that went on during the foreclosure years in Florida. It uncovers the lack of integrity demonstrated by people who were mandated to provide justice, fairness and equitability to the common people. The judgments rendered on behalf of banks allowed many people to profit at the expense of those who were caught in foreclosure. Case in point was the well-designed marketing of foreclosed homes to Canadian buyers who enriched themselves through the purchase of these foreclosed homes. Stopa shines a light on judicial practices that were far from just. Interesting and enlightening read that helps to appreciate the darker side of the justice system.
