4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

It’s Christmas 1885 and everyone is gathering to celebrate at the River T ranch. The day promises a feast and fellowship for all, but surprises lay ahead.

Nora Taylor adores Vittorio Medina. He’s been her best friend all of her young life, but now she wants more than friendship from him. She’s too young, he insists while fighting his own growing feelings for her. Besides, she is the boss’s daughter. He’s just a poor cowboy of Mexican blood. They can never be together.

Although Nora refuses to accept what Vittorio says, she’s afraid he will go off and marry someone else before she is old enough to fight for his love. This Christmas threatens to bring her more pain than joy until a special gift offers hope.

Lyn Horner resides in Fort Worth, Texas – “Where the West Begins” – with her husband and several very spoiled cats. Her two grown children live within easy driving distance along with a gaggle of delightful grandkids.

Trained in the visual arts at the prestigious Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Lyn worked as a fashion illustrator and art instructor for a number of years before turning to her longtime love of writing. She takes pride in crafting passionate love stories, both historical and contemporary. When not writing, Lyn enjoys reading, gardening, genealogy, visiting with family and friends, and cuddling her furry, four-footed children.

The author’s Texas Devlins series blends authentic Old West settings, steamy romance and a glimmer of paranormal. This series has earned multiple awards and nominations, including Crowned Heart reviews and a Rone Award nomination from InD’Tale Magazine.

Lyn was a contributor to Rawhide ʼn Roses, a Western Romance Anthology. This book was a finalist in the 2015 RONE Awards anthology category. Lyn was also part of the bestselling western Christmas anthology Silver Belles and Stetsons. Regrettably, these books are no longer available. However, she is represented in The Posse, a historical western anthology available on Amazon.

Jumping from the American Old West to the present time, Lyn immersed herself in her eight-book romantic suspense series, Romancing the Guardians. These books combine her trademark flashes of psychic phenomena with Irish folklore and a chilling pre-apocalyptic theme. Along the way, readers are treated to thunderous action, terrifying suspense and sizzling romance in places around the world.

Vittorio Medina is 16 years old when he leaves the Taylor farm where he grew up and where his mother works as a cook. He takes a job at the neighboring Crawford-Devlin ranch to keep away from temptation in the form of 12-year-old Nora, daughter of David and Jessie Taylor. Vito returns to the Taylor farm on Christmas Day and sparks fly. When Nora's heart is broken, her mother gives her the perfect gift in the form of a glimpse into her future. Will Jessie's revelation lead to happiness or put everyone in danger? We'll have to wait and see.

Nora comes from a special family. Her mother can "see" things before they happen and her Uncle Tye is "sensitive" to what other people are feeling. These characters, along with Nora's extended family, have previously featured in the author's "Texas Devlins" series. While some details seem irrelevant to this story, I'm sure fans of the "Texas Devlins" series will be glad to catch up with some old friends.

This novella gives us a lovely insight into how Christmas Day was celebrated in 1885, especially with respect to the types of presents the children received, and in relation to the specific roles of the men and women. I was pleased to see the author not only concentrate on the developing romance between Nora and Vittorio, but to also portray the loving relationship of the older married couple, David and Jessie Taylor.

This is a nice introduction to the upcoming romance novel featuring Nora and Vittorio as adults. A glossary of the Spanish terms used would be helpful.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

I read The Perfect Gift: A Texas Devlins Christmas by Lyn Horner as part of the Silver Belles and Stetsons anthology. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

It is July, 1885 in Bosque County, Texas. Nora Taylor and Vittorio Medina have been raised together. But, Nora is the land owner’s daughter. She is white and only twelve years old. Vito is the land manager’s son, he is Mexican and is four years older. It’s always been his job to protect Nora. But a day came when he started to see her as more than his little sister. So he knew it was time to go. He took a job as a ranch hand at a neighboring ranch.

At Christmas when he comes home to visit, Nora proclaims her love for Vito so he had to do the honorable thing, even though it wasn’t true, and tell her he didn’t feel the same way. That he saw her only as a little sister. Nora is heart broken. But her mother has a special gift for Nora. A gift that gives her hope that a day will come when she and Vito can be together. She will have to be patient and wait a long time. But she is convinced that their time will someday come.
