Opener of Doors: Book 3: The Phosfire Journeys Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

In this eagerly awaited sequel to "Practitioner of the Arts," Zeal, a young Phosfire, and his Shadow Cat, Kit, seek out the cause of Mother Essmee’s distress, only to discover that Master Feneas is dying. Zeal is stricken at the thought of losing of his esteemed Mentor in the Arts. And what happens when the bond between Mother Essmee, Feneas’s Shadow Cat, and her bond mate, Feneas, is shattered? Are Zeal and Kit destined to share Feneas’s and Essmee’s fate? Zeal’s close friends and fellow apprentices, Tulip and Tallen, offer to help save Master Feneas and Mother Essmee. The four young adventurers set off to find the mythical Tree of Life, a journey fraught with dangers, obstacles, and threats. To complicate matters, before they leave, Zeal is seized by a compulsion to open a hidden door he discovered in the Repository Archive, a highly restricted area. Ignoring the wisdom offered by his mentors, Zeal takes rash actions that set him on a perilous path and jeopardize his quest to aid Feneas.

James D. Macon has created another marvelous set of adventures, alive with the author’s fabulous imagination. The tale provides surprise after surprise, glowing with the signature warmth and affection that makes his tales so unique. As Kit the Shadow Cat says, “We hunt as one.”

Opener of Doors continues the heartwarming journey of Zeal, Kit and company in James D. Macon’s world of fire, secrets, and shadows. This time two members of the close-knit group are old and dying: Master Feneas the beloved necromancer, and his Shadow Cat Mother Essmee. In an effort to save them, Zeal, Kit, Tallen and Tulip set off on a quest to find the lost Tree of Life, to overcome the dreaded terrors that guard it, and bring back a living vial of its waters. A daunting task—but if this were just the only task! As they prepare for their quest, time pressing down on them, wall after wall of troubles stand before them, each more dangerous than the last, offering plenty of opportunities to die along the way. They must rely heavily on each other’s talents: trade fighter, druid bard, shadow hunter, and magical Phosfire. And finally, Zeal must learn to be the Opener of Doors.

Note: If you have not read the first two books, the author provides a short introduction at the beginning of this book that will be very helpful. But don’t cheat yourself—read them all!

Once again got this next-in-the-series for my grandson (an advanced reader with a great heart, if I do say so myself). This has all the adventure and engaging characters one wants in a story, plus imaginative world-building. Getting the next of the series, too. Christmas is coming.
