Piercing the Veil: A Lovecraftian Occult Thriller Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 46 ratings

It's Lovecraftian Lethal Weapon cranked to 11!

What do flesh-eating cell phones, brain-enhancing tacos, and a real live dead foot have in common? They're all tools in the destruction of our world, and a weapons-grade team of heavily-armed Miskatonic University nerds may be humanity’s last hope.Something is ripping holes in the Veil of energy that separates our world from that of the ancient evils writhing just beyond what we think is reality. Time is running out for Professors Derrick LeStrand, Howard Strauss and their team of researchers as they race to hunt down a mysterious Frenchman who wields Necromantic Death Magic unlike anything they’ve seen before.Tearing open psychological wounds from Derrick’s past, the cabalistic sorcerer is gathering ancient icons of power to pierce the Veil and bring down the only thing shielding mankind from the relentless horrors beyond. If they fail, the only questions that will remain are who will live in servitude to the Great Old Ones and who will die…and who will supply Derrick with tacos?Set against the backdrop of a world where H.P. Lovecraft was not a fiction writer, but a Sweep, a special operative trained to protect the collective sanity of the human race with misinformative blends of fact and fiction … where the Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual is little more than a slightly skewed Audubon Field Guide, and the monster movies you grew up with are more documentary than not.

It’s over-the-top Nerdthulhu locked, loaded, and gunning for the Elder Gods

Guy Riessen creates a world where all the Lovecraft horrors are real, where the veil between our world and Evil is slim and frayed. The characters are interesting, primarily Derrick and Howard, and the dialogue is fun albeit a tad corny. The chemistry among the team members is real and believable and makes the book.

With books like Piercing the Veil you usually find a few implausible leaps of plot, and if the author is good you don’t stop reading, you shrug and go on. That’s what I did.

Piercing the Veil is not great literature. it is entertainment. It’s reasonably well-written, with a fast plot that’s fun to read, with characters that I liked, with a villain that is not so villainous as to be unbelievable. I will certainly look for the sequel.

What an imagination. Guy Riessen weaves a tale that is not for the squeamish. This novel is very entertaining and was a lot of fun to read. I look forward to the next book when it comes out in March. I picked this up for a measly 99 cents and man did I score. I highly recommend it. If you have ever read H.P. Lovecraft you owe it to yourself to read this. While it can be a standalone book, it is open for a plethora of stories that can go anywhere the twisted mind (and that is a sincere compliment) that this talented author decides to go. So, another author that I must follow. Yay!

If you're a fan of well written and witty banter you're in the right place.
If you're a fan of Original story and great use of imagery even better.
Tie all that together and add Lovecraftian setting and you find one of the best book I have ever read!

From the very first sentence you want to read more. Very fast paced action. Love able hero’s and HP Lovecraft. What more could you want in a story. Great read. You won’t be disappointed

MU professors deployed as a tactical ghost busters team. The writing is good, some clever ideas and a good villain are introduced. . . but the book seems like 80% witty banter between the heroes- ends on a "to be continued" note.

Fast and fun, frightening and funny.

Take the cast of Big Bang Theory (except sheldon), arm them with the latest in high-end murder tech, and throw them in a blender full of monsters from beyond, set to high. Very high.

Structured like a Hollywood action thriller, with fast-moving combat and characters who toggle effortlessly between comic-con nerds and black ops specialists (except when their PTSD kicks in). Its efficient prose, served in digestible chapters, makes this easy to pick up for a few minutes of light entertainment, but its humor and originality make it hard to put down. It's biggest flaw, I think, is that there's not enough of it.

A charming and original new addition to H. P. Lovecraft's mythosverse. Recommended for fans of the genre, pop-culture geeks, and those who love Bruce and the Raimi brothers.

I would call it a "tongue in cheek" Delta Green novel.
    Secret government organizations
    Hidden cults
    Modern weaponry
Ancient secrets & knowledge that man was never meant to know
