Author C. Chase Harwood (aka Chris)
C. Chase Harwood made a career in Hollywood, decorating sets for film and television before turning his passion for storytelling into clicks on a keyboard. While scaling the walls of the screenwriting world, he chose to experiment with prose and found a fondness for Scifi-action-adventure. Within that framework, he gets to explore the countless ways that humans interact while under duress. "Life is all the more lived when the consequences are high. When told as a tale it can be quite a page-turner," says Harwood. He lives in Southern California with his costume designer wife and young boy girl twins.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019You'll never look at your "machines" the same way again!
True to his style, Harwood puts together another another story that speeds by as fast as a comet blazing through the solar system. His stories move. And we don't know where they're going.
Without spoiling any details, my favorite part by far is the development of the characters who are sentient robots, and the complexity that comes about after they have been "awakened." The narrative blends humor and danger in a way that Harwood pulls off particularly well, one can trust this in his writing at this point, but as all good fiction and science fiction will do, Harwood explores complex ideas of personhood, freedom, identity, affection, autonomy, and slavery all without hitting you over the head with the subjects or telling the reader how to feel. He is not moralizing. He is weaving a very enjoyable and unpredictable tale, and along the way I found myself considering several aspects of human history and wondering how we might handle similar challenges in the future. Oh, and there's freaking space pirates! That's not a spoiler, is it? I mean, the title gives that part away.
So, be kind to your toaster! Give your microwave an encouraging pat on the shoulder. Take your vacuum to a movie.
Apologize to your computer, (you know why) because you never know when they might be able to make decisions of their own...
...and how will we fare once they do?
Loved this book! Keep 'em coming!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2019Pirates of Saturn overall was a good read, but the presentation of the story seemed a bit jumbled to me, and frustrating. Perhaps that is because it has been quite a while since reading the previous books. It still kept me interested, but felt to be more of a bridge between the previous books and the next one.
Although the story explained the use of jargon in Jada Temple, I still did not enjoy the forced nature of it.
The crew of the Belle and Diamond were enjoyable characters, and the villains played their part well.
I will recommend this, but hope that the conclusion to this series shine just a bit brighter.

Just like the first one, there's a world built with fine detail that makes you want more.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2019Disclaimer: I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for a review. That being said, I would have purchased this book anyway, as I had enjoyed the first book and the prequel. C. Chase Harwood has done it again. a very enjoyable book. A sequel to Bastion of Saturn, Pirates of Saturn continues the story of a motley crew of misfits and their adventures in the space around Saturn and it's moons. I like how science and math based physics are used to make this story seem real. Humans, robots, pirates and dastardly deeds, along with a good story line make this book a must read for any fan of science fiction. I can hardly wait for the next installment in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2019I really loved his prior work, "Bastian Saturn". It had all the things I love about successful SciFi and he wrote it without adding-in vampires, though I must admit, Peter Watt's vampires are well done. Though "Pirates" would work standalone you would be missing a large part of the story if you started here opposed to reading "Bastian Saturn" first.
I don't want to give away too much, but I think Chase spends more time developing his non-human characters. In both this and "Bastian" I really felt the robots seemed to be really well done. Interestingly though, Chase was able to imbue the robots with life very economically with just a few sentences or observations.
Both books would work well on the big screen and if you love SciFi with humor thrown-in like "Men in Black" and "Gaurdians", I think you will love these as well. Too many authors forget to develop all aspects of life in a book. For instance, I love Neal Asher's works but I don't remember reading anything even a little sarcastic in his books unless maybe from Sniper? Anyway, I think once you read both "Bastian" and "Pirates" you'll see what I mean.
One other quick comment, I've been so, so disappointed by the "read for free" books on Amazon. I can't even get through the first 10 pages of some due to either broken story lines, broken technology, etc, etc. It was so refreshing to find a new author (to me at least) like Harwood that is clearly way above the others.
I've read over 2,000 SciFi books in the past 23yrs, donating 1,400 to Goodwill one year, keeping only my favorites. Had I a copy of these last two they would be keepers.

The book was really a pleasure to read. The personages are really well constructed and the story unravels with at a good pace helping to build a really credible story. Looking forward to read the third installment of this saga!

4.0 out of 5 stars Death defying
Unlikely heroes. Excellent characters. Exciting story. Too much swearing for this swearing free reader. Many issues raised within this adventure.
