- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2021It is one strange case that Inspector James Givens of the Warwickshire Constabulary finds himself in charge of. The body of what looks like a young girl is found in the crypt of the chapel of the local school. The chapel is hundreds of years older than the school itself, and the crypt may be older still. The girl’s body is posed, her hands tied around a crucifix. There’s a hammer lying nearby.
Because of the conditions of the crypt, the body is essentially mummified. The medical examiner can say when she died or how she died. The only thing that suggests foul play is the posing of the body. And there’s nothing to identify who she is. Givens discovers he’s looking for a needle in a haystack.
His professional life is also complicated by another case he’s looking into – growing vandalism against Jewish businesses. It’s 1938 Britain; Hitler’s making moves on Czechoslovakia on the continent and Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists is demonstrating that Britain is no stranger to hostility to Jews. Givens himself is Jewish, having Anglicized his name for professional purposes. He’s run into hostility and prejudice, right there among his own police colleagues.
And the Sicilian Demme brothers are lurking in the background, possibly connected to the vandalism which soon turns to arson. Givens has old scores to settle with them, unless they get to him first.
“A Pretty Folly” by British author Charlie Garratt is the second in the Inspector James Givens series. It’s an mystery filled with disguised or mistaken identities, a multitude of suspects, and a problem of figuring out how the victim actually died.
Garratt is the author of four Inspector Given mysteries, including “A Shadowed Livery,” “A Pretty Folly,” “A Patient Man,” and “Where Every Man.” He also published several community participation guides, until he retired and began writing short stories. One of those stories led to his first novel, “A Shadowed Livery.” He lives in Shropshire in England.
“A Pretty Folly” is rich with actual historical detail – the rise the Nazis, the plight of the Jews in Europe, Oswald Mosley and his thugs in Britain – coupled with one unusual murder story. It’s a highly entertaining read.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2019This is an exciting mystery that holds your attention throughout the whole book. Lots of opportunity and possible motives abound with each interesting character described. Sophisticated author with clever style, really enjoyed this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2019I enjoyed this book even more than the first Inspector Givens novel. I've enjoyed getting to know the character better, as well as Sawyer and Dyer too. The political events of the novel are as relevant today as they were back in 1938/9, and I hope many readers won't simply dismiss it as historical detail. Events today in many parts of the world reflect the same attitudes and prejudices.
In terms of the plot, it unfolds well, with suspects and red herrings in good doses, always keeping the reader not quite sure if their suspicion is right. I'm looking forward to the next instalments.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2019I am enjoying this series about Inspector James Givens. There is a lot of info about what the Jews were going thru in England prior to the start of WWII. Givens is involved in this plus he has a mummified girl found in an church vault. There are quite a few possible suspects but the author keeps throwing out red herrings until the end when James nabs the killer.
There is also a running storyline about the murder of his first love that started in the first book. So there is a lot going on in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2020This book has an interesting death, multiple mysteries, and an Inspector who self reflects. Well written with a flavor of the 1930s.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2019I received a complimentary copy of this book from Sapere Books in exchange for an honest review. As always, I will focus on a critique and try to avoid any spoilers or simple plot summaries.
This is the first book I have read by Charlie Garratt, and I can appreciate a British mystery. Inspector Given was a likable sort, with flaws, of course, but this made him human. I was interested to see what would happen in the case of Rose Spicer. Although I figured out Whodunit pretty early on, I still wanted to see the how.
So, why three stars? The time period is during WWII so Jews are being persecuted even in England. There is a side story here regarding Givens figuring out who is tearing up Jews' shops, and this side story slowed down the pace of the book for me and introduced a lot of characters (henchmen) that derailed the story and made me have to turn back to figure out their roles. There is also a brief interlude with Givens' ex that went nowhere and seemed just thrown in.
Ultimately, I would have liked to have seen more focus on Givens solving the murder of Rose Spicer. The Jewish persecution storyline almost deserves its own book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2019I've read both of the books in this series and have enjoyed reading them very much. Will read book 3 if there is one.

6th March 1939. The rumours of the threat of war across Europe has reached England, and has resulted in an increase in violence against the Jewish community in Coventy. Inspector James Given, a Jew by birth, is seconded to the investigation, for one day a week.
Meanwhile, in Kenilworth, at the Hannah Robinson's Charity School a body is discovered. A mummified body in the Chapel's vaults. Inspector Given investigates the case and suspects with the help of Constable Sawyer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent storyline
Thanks to Sapere Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review Charlie Garratt's second book in the series about Inspector Given, I personally found it to be an excellent read. The book starts with the discovery of a body that has been left in a crypt belonging to a charity school in Kenilworth, Inspector Given is called to investigate but due to the time in the crypt the Coroner is loathe to say she was murdered. Given has a number of suspects but nothing that can be pinned down to anyone in particular as its all circumstantial. Inspector Given is also giving one day a week of his time to investigate hate crimes against Jewish businesses in Coventry when he finds two of his old adversaries up the their old tricks, both he and the Demma brothers have a past history that he can't forget and it seems neither can they.

4.0 out of 5 stars History and Mystery!
In the second book of the Inspector Given series ( although the story can easily be read as a standalone) we find Britain on the brink of war and Given is initially trying to root out those involved in attacks of the Jewish community in Coventry. However when the partially mummified body of a young woman is found in the crypt of a local school, he is brought in to find her murderer which proves to be an awkward task as the pathologist isn't too keen at the start to say that she had been murdered.
Also we have the inspector still seeking out 2 Sicilian brothers, with whom he has history, as he believes they are behind the attacks on the local business men. The story line has lots to it but that doesn't detract from it and we also are given a little more information about Given's personal life. Overall a good story and if you like history and mystery, then this is one to read.
Thanks to Sapere Books for the ARC to review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!
I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the second instalment of Inspector Given’s world. Carrying on with the theme of the first book, England 1939 is on the cusp of war with Germany and antisemitism is on the rise in England as well as Germany. We learn more about the struggle of Uncle Gideon trying to leave Germany before it’s too late. Inspector Given continues to be torn with issues of religion and love in his personal life whilst tackling a new murder investigation. Very Well written and interesting characters that you feel drawn to. I can see these characters and stories translating well to screen. I can’t wait for the next in the series!!!
