She ignites aspiring writers’ imaginations for creating one’s own worlds and the characters who inhabit them, all while encouraging the empathy found in discovering others’ points-of-view. She makes learning fun as a gateway to discovering the fun in writing. Though the prompts are targeted to kids, the more I thought about how teens and young adults would enjoy them, too, the more I realized how much they might appeal to any age—and even to me, who found myself wanting to pause and do each one before reading the next. She makes learning fun, which is how we discover the fun in writing at ever more mature levels. I can imagine a youngster doing some or all of these exercises, then trying them again over the years, which is part of the genius in these examples—there is no correct level, but rather the challenge in nurturing the next, wherever each participant starts. I discovered WJ Scott when I gave (meaning read first) her fantasy story “Fairy Dust” to a delighted grandniece. When my local library solicited suggestions for encouraging young writers, I recalled seeing the title on Ms. Scott’s Amazon page. What a terrific find!
