"Masterfully plotted, Walker builds to not one but several unexpected twists in the novel's final pages. Readers will no doubt clamor for the next book in this series; a thrilling start from an exciting new talent." -Kirkus Reviews (Prism)

"The story captivated me from the first sentence, the colors practically jumping off the page. Jessa and Lucas's romance was so well developed, with just the right mix of conflict and teen angst to keep you rooting for them." -Tricia Barr, author of The Bound Ones Series (Prism)

"Young adult readers will enjoy "Prism's" romance, plot twists and, of course, color magic... I wouldn't be surprised if people began practicing color alchemy with their potted plants after reading this book. An impressive debut for what appears to be a promising series!" -Eleyne-Mari Sharp, director of Aura House School of Color and Light (Prism)

"I don't even know where to begin with this review. I'm completely blown away and I would give Prism more than 5 stars if I could! " -Book Nerd, Amazon Reviewer (Prism)

"I started reading this book thinking it was going to be like all the other YA magic books out there, but I underestimated it. It was good. Really, really good. The system of magic was different than what I expected. The characters were well-developed. And more than once, I was surprised by the direction of the story." -Melissa, Amazon Reviewer (Prism)

"This series is so amazing! It's a must read that you won't be able to put down! I won't give spoilers but this story keeps you guessing because the moment you think you know how it's going to go it throws you a curve." -Michelle, Amazon Reviewer (The Color Alchemist Series)

"One of the other things I loved about this series is how unpredictable it was ( which was sometimes frustrating and had me yelling at the characters). I'm so glad they now come in a box set!" -Desiree, Amazon Reviewer (The Color Alchemist Series)

"I have them in both hard copy and ebook! Such a great addition to my library! Plus one I will love my children to read as they come into their teenage years...clean fiction!" -Amazon Reviewer (The Color Alchemist Series)

I wish review system was more inclusive as 5 stars to me should be perfection but 4 stars just isn’t fair to give either this is a really intriguing fun book I couldn’t put it down, read it in a day and a half may fun elements plots and characters, was talentedly written and it far exceeded any expectation I had for someone’s first book. I can see this being a big hit with young adults or anyone enjoying the genre I think I enjoy it even more then I did the Hunger Games which was hugely successful and intriguing and well plotted and appealing to many ages, it reminds me some of that series but is deffinetly an original story and can stand completely on its own accord. I’m impressed really fun to get taken in by a book you can’t put down!

Prism is a wonderfully engaging story that has magical realism mixed in with eastern influences. Set in a dystopian world where many societies have already collapsed, the New Colony Kingdom had thrived. This kingdom was rumored to have done so well due to the royal family’s guidance and the use of alchemy. Specifically, their use of color alchemy.

Color alchemy was a rare talent that usually manifested itself when children were around the elementary age. I loved this element to the story. It is based on the seven chakra centers, believed to be physic energy centers, in or around the spinal column. A color alchemist in this world can separate colors down to the primary sources and utilize the color for its intended purpose. An example would be the color green from plants could be used as a healing agent. Color alchemy was rare but the most sought after alchemists were the ones who would be able to separate and utilize the colors red, white, and black.

Jessa Loxley was one of those rare color alchemists. So rare, even she was unaware of her abilities until one fateful night at her ballet recital. Once her magic was discovered she was kept as a virtual prisoner by the king and forced to train under the tutelage of Prince Lucas. Separated from everyone she had ever known and thrown into a world of color guardians where she was despised and berated, Jessa longed for her life before she manifested her talent.

Soon Jessa learned that what she understood to be true as a citizen was not the same truth that she is being told as an alchemist. She quickly became aware that as a citizen she was deceived for political purposes and that there was something more sinister than she could have ever imagined happening in her very own kingdom. As she learned more about her abilities and the motivations of others she began to uncover a truth that gave her a new purpose in life.

Prism has many of elements that are easily recognized as young adult but it also has amazing world building, magical realism, and only a little of the YA angst. The characters are all fleshed out, memorable, and never what you expect them to be. There is a romance element but it is more of a deep yearning feel. Overall, Prism was a fun and magical read that kept me hanging on with its fast-paced action and political subterfuge.

This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Book Review 22. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.

I read YA Fiction religiously, so this book was up against A LOT of competition.

So first, it's definitely a new take on magic, which I was skeptical of, but after finishing the book I loved the premise of color alchemy. This is definitely a breath of fresh air in terms of originality.

My only critique is that I did feel as though things fell into place very neatly and some of it was unrealistic, but it was a minor issue and I wouldn't mention it but I feel as though for some people that's s turn off.

Overall, I say give it a shot! This is a debut author and I think she really surpassed my expectations when it comes to "first" books.

This is a part of a series and I can't wait for the next one to come out!

I obtained the trilogy collection, but I won’t be going any further than this first book. The magic system in this book is a fascinating/original one with plenty of imagination put into deciding what each color could be used for. And the intrigue was fascinating, like what was going on with Lucas’s mother, what the government was lying to them about their world’s history, what the world was like beyond the city, etc. But the magic itself is rather muddied and generic since it’s basically just described as using ones will and intentions to draw the color off of the current object and guide it to where it’s needed. The book felt long and very little happened during it. The book was set almost exclusively within the palace. Her training session scenes were a joke. I mean, it was like they would discuss color for a bit then break for a meal or take the rest of the day off. Or she would manipulate one thing, and then take the rest of the day off. Is that how training went for other guards, do you think? Though I liked Lucas for the most part, being caught between a rock and a hard place, and I liked Sasha, what colored my opinion against the book the most was I took a dislike to Jessa the heroine. She was frivolous, selfish, self-centered, rather dumb, convinced things could go back to normal if she could get out of there (like they wouldn’t arrest her up if she got out), convinced that the whole idea of people having to either be in the guard or jail didn’t apply to her, convinced she ought to be able to talk to her family daily even though no one at the guard had any contact with their families. I kept reading in the hopes she would mature and understand basic concepts, but she kept whining throughout the book. For her age of 17, she came off really childish.

I'm a sucker for anything supernatural, whether it's fairy related, ghosts, witches, or just magic in general. And this book did not disappoint! It's a new take on magic, with the characters being able to manipulate colors to perform their magic in a dystopian type society. I also like it how in these dystopian books, the author gives ideas of where these places are located in our time and world. Same thing was done with Hunger Games and Divergent. The characters were very easy to relate to and I was sucked into the story from the first page. For a first time, self published author, I could not be more please and excited to see what comes next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Colour Power
Reviewed in Germany on March 20, 2018
This book was a very interesting surprise! I really liked this concept that colours can hold so much power and do some pretty awesome things, I hope this is something that gets continually built. I especially love the link between a persons centres and how they hold so much meaning.

I like our main character Jessa, she is very strong character and knows that she needs to make changes to help the people around her, I do wish that we could have seen more of her life before she got thrown into all of this and hope to maybe get some more background.

I like the other side characters in the palace as well, Reed as much as you don't want to like him is likeable, and I feel the same with Sasha as well a lot to be said about her story and definitely saw that twist coming.

Lucas is an interesting spark added to the team, I'm still not sure how to see him but do notice he has a lot of demons in his past and soul.

I am so ready to see this world build even more as the concept has gripped me, ready for book 2

I really enjoyed this book and I read it in less than a day because I just had to know what happened next! I never really found the pacing to drag on or become boring. The point of view in the book switches between the two main characters but it never got confusing. I also really liked the premise of color alchemy magic. My favourite section in the book was the exploration of drawing power from each colour. The characters were well developed and feel authentic.

If you like books like Hunger Games or Divergent, give this one a try! I'm so excited to read book two and see what happens next!!

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is well worth the read and I am looking forward to finishing the series!
Reviewed in India on November 16, 2020
Prism by author Nina Walker introduces the reader to an intriguing concept of magic and magical abilities and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The story is well-written and fast paced, keeping the reader hooked until the very end.

We are introduced to Jessa, who accidently discovers that she is a color alchemist and tries to hide the truth from everyone. Once discovered, we come to know that she might be very powerful and is brought to the palace for training. The author introduces us to a dystopian world where the King rules the New Colony and a certain order is established. Anyone who shows an inclination towards Color Alchemy is brought to the Palace at a very young age and then undergoes rigorous training to join the Guardians of Color (GC).

Jessa faces a lot of push back from everyone at the palace including the other alchemists as she is already sixteen. It seems to be quite late for her to be here. There are many interesting characters including Sasha and Reed who are not easy to get a read on. The reader will not know what anyone's intentions are until the very end. But, one thing is clear, Jessa is special and an asset to the King for whatever plan he has up his sleeve.

In addition, we are introduced to the Prince, who seems to have a different view of things than his father and is trying to find a way to save his mother who is quite ill. Add into the mix some chemistry between the two main characters and the author provides us with the perfect recipe for a book filled with magic, romance and a wonderfully new concept of magic drawn from colors!

The story will draw the reader in until the very end and is not without some well placed twists and turns. With everyone having their own agenda, what happens to the story and all the characters remains to be seen. This book is well worth the read and I am looking forward to finishing the series!

I was really excited to read this book as it is my kind of genre. Was pleasantly surprised by this new 'style' of magic as it's something I've not I read before - though at first it took me a while to get my head around it. Fab characters who I could relate to. A very enjoyable read and eager for the rest of Nina's books! Would recommend (and have already).
