As a great admirer of the time, I learn so much from these books. And do so via a well thought out story.

This is the third book in the series and I have to say the author is on a roll. This book is as good as the first two. Jack and Esther are a charming pair of investigators and their personal and professional lives in Victorian England make for an engaging read. As always you can read this book as a stand-alone But I recommend beginning with the first book in the series.

A female body is found along a train track in the middle of the night. Esther and Jack on the case, except this time Esther is WAIT FOR IT!!! Pregnant !!!! Yay!!! Along with Percy, Jack's uncle, they set out to prove their theory that murder was perpetrated by someone well known to the victim. And that's not all the murderer was up to. Disgusting! I've loved this series from the first book, but this has been my least favorite. I guess because of the brother/sister dynamic. It bothered me. Esther and her assertiveness made up for it though. She's a lovely character. She makes the books for me. They wouldn't be nearly as interesting without her personality as written. Everything feeds off her. Field has created a fine series with Esther and Jack Enright. I look forward to the next book.

"The Prodigal Sister" is the third book in the Esther & Jack Enright Victorian mystery series. I have read the previous two books and was happy to spend more time with Esther and Jack. The mystery itself would be enjoyable for new readers, but reading at least the first book in the series will allow readers to get to know the main characters better.

When this book begins, Jack Enright and his uncle, Percy Enright, are both detectives for Scotland Yard. They are assigned to investigate the death of an unidentified young, pregnant woman. As the investigation continues, Jack and Percy call upon Esther to go undercover to get further evidence against their prime suspect. I was at first expecting the investigation to look into multiple suspects to determine who really committed the crime. The main suspect was distasteful from the beginning, even before knowing if he was also a murderer. Soon I realized, the story was all about proving this unpleasant man was the killer. Once I realized that was the type of story this mystery was, I could sit back and enjoy seeing Jack, Percy, and Esther get justice for the young woman who was murdered.

This installment wasn't my favorite of the three books, but I love this series and really like the main characters and the rapport and love between them. I am already looking forward to Jack and Esther's next case. This book will appeal to fans of Anne Perry.

I received this book through the courtesy of Sapere Books. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

This is a charming Victorian mystery/thriller with a never-boring storyline and fascinating characters. I haven't yet read the previous offerings, but there was no ambiguity in this story.

As the story begins, the mangled body of a woman is discovered in a railway tunnel. There are no wasted words as the matter is investigated by Sergeant Percy Enright and his nephew, Constable Jack Enright, of Scotland Yard. Jack's wife, Esther, is persuaded to undertake an undercover role as they pursue their suspect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for fans of Victorian crime

When the body of a woman is found on the railway tracks, the police initially think it is a case of suicide. When Detective Jack Enright and his uncle Percy discover the true identity of the women, however, they soon realise that all is not what they first assume. Suspecting murder, they need to get close to her family in order to find out the truth, so Jack’s wife, Esther, is tasked to go undercover, putting herself in danger in the process…

The Prodigal Sister is the third book in the Esther & Jack Enright mystery series, and we see the home circumstances of our heroes have changed dramatically. Now married with a young child, Esther isn’t really used to staying at home and so is not completely against the idea of going undercover, even if it could prove to be dangerous. Esther’s role does, indeed, prove to be pivotal in smoking out the killer, even if it is as a result of some rather unorthodox police tactics!

We discover quite early on who the killer is, as they are identified quickly by Jack and his superior officer uncle, Percy. The fun in this book then isn’t ‘whodunnit’, but in seeing the lengths the police (and Esther) will go to in order to secure a confession. The methods they used place this book very definitely in the Victorian era and helped to provide a snapshot of the psyche of a lot of people of that time.

This is a great series, ideal for anyone who enjoys historical crime fiction, and I’m already looking forward to reading the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars not nearly as good as the first two and they weren’t brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2023
Really this series should be renamed as the Percy Enright mysteries, Jack has such a minimal role as side kick to his Uncle and I am not sure putting Esther in such dangerous situations would be welcome by her loving husband especially now they have a young child. We skipped 2 years from the last book but Jack has yet to learn anything useful from Uncle Percy, he is still treated like a greenhorn, he comes across as a widgeon and is patronised by both his uncle and his wife.
I keep having to remind myself it was set in Victorian times, if I had to guess I would say it was set in the1920-30, it just feels too modern and jarring, the description of the settings doesn’t match the dialogue, add a few cars instead of horse drawn coaches and you would never notice the difference. I kept reading in the hope that it would get better, sadly once (spoiler alert) the antagonist got his comeuppance I stopped.
I am not sure if I will read the next in the series, I just don’t think I care about nice but dim Jack, brave and capable Esther and oh so clever Percy who gets his man at any cost.
