- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2018The author(s) weave a story of a powerful friendship between two young women set in the fantasy land that is Hollywood and the TV/film production industry. They spin a tale where the two female leads' relationship is more true than any of their love relationships. I enjoyed their ups and downs as they tried to make a go of it in this plastic world. I found it heartening that in the end their maternal instincts combined to help a pre-teen who needed them as much as they needed each other. This book has many layers, which is integral to its success. The discussion questions at the end are perfect for readers in book clubs. I personally would suggest a list of characters at the beginning of the book in future editions, because there are many characters and I forgot who some of the minor characters were when they showed up later, but that might be just me. I love books with strong female characters, and this definitely fits the bill. It left me wondering who really was the monkey and who really was me, as I examined the friendships in my own life. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2024I really enjoyed this book. It's so juicy and salacious! It is the perfect story and very entertaining. It's not slow at all and moves quickly through the storyline. I'm ready for the sequel!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2017Great light read, perfect for avid and infrequent readers alike. The story line moved along quickly without being overwhelming and there was the perfect amount of drama to hold your interest at all times. My favorite aspect, though, was that the core messages were very real and raw. The conflicts may have been between two powerful women in a media world I know little about, but the push and pull of their relationships and endeavors were very familiar to me. Fantastic book, I highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2017Production Values is a book about relationships at its core and how the pressures of being an adult with big dreams and big worries can tear into the foundations we've built with the people around us. The main characters, Kat Porter and Bea Douglas fall into typical archetypes -- the artist and the realist (at least at first sight). In many ways, Kat represents pure idealism -- living in the moment, and making outrageous dreams possible . Bea is practical, realistic and lays the groundwork for her master plan along the way. Kat and Bea's relationship is a visible struggle between the head and the heart. There's a glory and ugliness to the back and forth of Kat and Bea's friendship as it's tested by the production they've built together. The spiral of circumstances that is the fast-paced world of the Hollywood Industrial Complex challenges who they've come to be. Bea begins to learn that, without a bit of risk, there is no reward. And Kat learns the even harder lesson that when you eventually miss the next step you better have a solid foundation to catch you or you just keep on falling.
I'm not someone who reads this genre of fiction very often, but I found myself drawn in by the characters and pacing at the get-go. I constantly found myself wanting to read more to find out where Kat's latest scheme would take them, and watch as Bea throws open doors, struts in and puts out fires with her bare hands. I wanted to see what crazy, tabloid-headline drama was going to befall Kat and Bea next. This novel excited me in ways only action-packed epics could do previously. If you're a fan of television and movies, you'll love this book. If your interests lie in the psychology of relationships, you'll love this book too!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2017I read the story of Kat Porter and Bea. It is a creative story of two friends that go through a lot of growth spurts through their business and friendship. I wasn't sure about their friendship till chapter four and it all started rolling from there for me.Once I learned that they meet in college and were best friends it took on a whole new role for me. Good story line and the characters become real. It was a good read.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2018I love reading books having to do with the television/movie business. I just find it very interesting to see the behind the scenes workings. Everyone has different sides to them and this was definitely a character driven story, with a fun plot. The fact that it took place in the whole Hollywood setting made it that much more interesting to me.
I couldn’t imagine working super closely with my best friend, all the laughing, getting on each other’s nerves and all the other things that would go along with it. I loved reading about Kat and Bea’s relationship dramas, throughout their process. I’m a huge fan of multiple points of views, and it definitely helped roll out this story. It was fun seeing the drama unfold and how all the characters handle themselves.
I can see myself re-reading this one on the beach because it really was a light and funny story. There were a few adult scenes, but nothing that made me uncomfortable in any way. I thought the characters were very relatable, and that made it more of a real story for me. There was great flow to the story and I really enjoyed it as a whole.

Production Values is a funny, fast-paced and entertaining read set in the world of television and movie production. Close friends and business partners Kat and Bea have very different takes on life and work. Then Kat's relationship with a glamorous Hollywood star tests their friendship to its limits. Sparkling fun and drama, sharply witty writing - recommended!
