Promise You Nothing: Strangers to lovers second chances romance (The South & Sexy Series Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

Emmie Conway has problems. Tall, arrogant Josh Hamilton problems.

Emmie’s brother has suddenly died. Their jointly owned ‘wrecked and ready to reno’ house is now unsaleable. And she might… just might… be pregnant, so her emotions are all over the place. She needs a competent builder, a way to pay off her huge debt, and a miracle. What she gets is implacable, bossy Josh.

He’s fresh out of an unhappy marriage, bitter and bruised, and relocating his property development company to a new city. He’s missing his little daughter fiercely, and she’s the only female he wants in his life right now. He sees Emmie’s job as the ideal challenge to take his mind off his past life, and he fights to give her everything he’s convinced she needs.

Emmie thinks he’s the fixer-upper from hell as she battles for her independence and survival. He’s doing a great job on her house, but does he really have to display his chiseled shirtless body to her as he works in the sweltering summer heat?

Her ‘possibly pregnant’ hormones are doing a gleeful tap dance, and soon more than her house is in danger.

Thanks for coming to meet me. I love words, and I use them to make the world a happier place by creating people who are perfect for each other – although maybe they can’t see that to start with.

I began writing at my local radio station in New Zealand and never stopped. TV followed, then horticultural articles (because I'm a keen gardener). After several advertising agencies, I then spent happy years as a retail ad manager. Totally hooked on fabrics, I surprised everyone by going into the curtain installation business with my husband and working for some of the capital city’s top designers. Good for my body, and it freed up my brain to write fiction. I didn't fall off my ladder once through drifting into romantic dreams, but I’ve certainly seen many beautiful homes and met wonderful people, and I may just have stolen glimpses of them for the books. (I didn’t say that, did I?)

I write sexy contemporary romance under my real name and the Merry Summerfield cozy mysteries as Kristie Klewes. These are funny and flirty and absolutely clean. (Well - apart from the bloodstains!)

I’m the author of more than thirty novellas and novels, three of which were finalists in New Zealand’s Clendon Award. Each can be read as a stand-alone, but some make up linked series. I hope you enjoy them all.

My more recent romances are billionaire beach stories about the wealthy Wynn family in Scarlet Bay - Summer Sparks, Summer Secrets, and Summer Spice. And the new Promise books - Promise You Nothing and Promise You Plenty.

Kris es una chispeante autora de romántica contemporánea, pura y simplemente. ¡Bueno, quizá no tan pura!

PROMISE YOU NOTHING is a standalone read with a happy ending. Emmie is living in Napier Hill, New Zealand. She is overwhelmed by all that has happened to her. She and her brother bought a big old house in need of repair. They had planned to fix the house up, she doing a lot of the inside work while her brother worked to pay the mortgage. Then her brother is killed in an accident and Emmie is left with a house she can't sell or pay to have remodeled. She is desperately trying to find a contractor to help her get the house fixed up to sell. She ran an ad but none of the guys that answered the ad wanted the job or were qualified to handle the work. She has one last appointment and then she is out of options.

Josh shows up to check the job and give her an estimate. He doesn't look like he can handle the work but she decides to hear him out. They go over everything in the house and garage that needs work and he tells her he will get back to her with an estimate. But then he comes back and asks to see the basement and garage again. She doesn't know it but he happens to be a very successful contractor and has won the bid on a huge project in her area. The work won't start for a couple of months, so he could do her job and then start his new project. Win-win. After his second look around he approaches Emmie with a proposition. He tells her if she will let him store his work truck and equipment in her big garage and let him sleep in the basement, and fix dinner each night, he will do the labor for her for a big discount. Since the basement only has one door to the outside and none to the house she feels she will be safe enough. She really has no choice so she agrees.

They get to work on the house the next day. It isn't long before they become friends. They work well together and he helps her cut corners whenever he can to save her money. All is going well and then she finds out that Josh has a 6 year old daughter and a gold digger for an ex-wife.

This is a great story. Kris is back with a good romance story. Lots of drama, fun and adventure as these two find their happy ever after. I really enjoyed the story and definitely recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 10/22/2021.

This is my absolute favorite of all Kris Pearson’s books. Emmie’s sad desperation seems to have no happy resolution in sight but is turned around by a chance meeting with the right builder. Both main characters are special in their own right and their portrayals fully realized and admirable. I was sad to get to the end of the book as I wanted their story to go on. Loved this book!

What a wonderful, steamy, and sexy story. I believe this is one of the steamiest books I've read by Kris Pearson, and I'm sure not complaining.

Emmie Conway has been dealt a huge blow. Not only has her brother tragically died, but she's left with a huge house flipping project that not only puts her in debt, but she's in no way capable of doing any of the remodel by herself.

Enter Josh Hamilton, a no nonsense contractor who is way too bossy and pushy for Emmie's liking, and way too gorgeous for her maybe pregnant hormones.

Josh is dealing with his own problems of a crumbling marriage, the loss of seeing his precious daughter every day, and moving his business to Emmie's town.

These two need each other way more than they know. Josh steam rolls Emmie at every turn, both on the house plans and in the bedroom. Emmie is headstrong and fights Josh, but she loses the battle every time he takes his shirt off. Oooh la la.

Don't miss this fun, sexy, and sweet read.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Kris Pearson has written another spicy yet rollicking New Zealand romance. Emmie Conway and her brother Lawrence bought a house in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. It was a house that needed major tender-loving-care, or to put it another way, a major fixer-upper. They had started tearing things apart for the rebuild. Unfortunately, Lawrence died in an auto accident. Now Emmie has no help with the rebuild or with the mortgage. She desperately needs a carpenter to at least make the home saleable. The third person to come to see if he can help, Josh Hamilton, is intrigued by the house and the homeowner. He sees plenty of possibilities, but money is so very tight for Emmie.

Josh agrees to work on the home partly in exchange for some room and board in the house. Can this really work out or will the temptations and house headaches be too much for them. You will have fun finding out in this story. I really enjoyed the story and applaud the fine editing and ease in reading. I also enjoyed a taste of New Zealand that Kris gives in her books. You've just got to read it. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVED Promise you Nothing, so much so that I immediately read it again. Talk about your characters fighting through their angst, emotional baggage and then all their complications on the way to celebrating their love. The slow unwrapping of Josh’s backstory was inspired, and the way he overcame all his own hurdles and the ones that Emmie threw at him kept me engaged right to the end.
I received an advanced copy in return for an honest.

This is second book I have read from this author and I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. Josh and Emmie were so good together. It would been nice to have an epilogue.
