The Retreat (The Writers' Retreat Book 1) Kindle Edition
What would you be willing to do to secure a publication deal of a lifetime from the biggest publisher in the country?
The challenge: You have to write a true-to-life crime story set in the Philippines. The case should not be completely resolved. At least 75 percent of the manuscript needs to be completed within thirty days. You have to be willing to go on a week-long writers’ retreat in an undisclosed location to discuss your manuscript and be critiqued by the other participants. Afterward, you have to be ready to revise and edit the manuscript for final publication.
The prize: Enough money to retire and just write with a guaranteed platform for release locally and internationally.
The catch: You can’t breathe a word to anyone. Post anything on social media and you are out. You will be asked to sign a nondisclosure agreement and a release that removes any responsibility from the organizers should anything untoward happens to you. You will not be allowed to bring any gadgets to the retreat. You will be completely cut off.
So . . . are you game?

About the author

Yeyet Soriano has been writing her entire life, first as an angst-ridden teenager, then as a single working woman, then as a married working woman with kids. Though the themes of her written works have changed over the years, she held on to one truth--she needed to write to keep the voices in her head at bay.
Based in Manila, Philippines, her day job is that of an IT manager for the Asia-Pacific region for a multinational corporation. She is married to a man who reads only to fall asleep, and they have three wonderful kids--two of whom love to read and one, only starting to learn to read.

I read one reviewer saying that “somewhat had flat characters” but I didn’t want to believe it. The first book I’ve read from Yeyet is her #romanceclass novella Kate, Finally and the characters… ah… let’s just say that they put me in a rollercoaster ride of emotion.
The Retreat did the same just better. The surprises and twist in the story was superb. I can’t get enough. Reading The Retreat is like reading mystery in a mystery itself.
Do I make sense?
The book ends with a kind of closures for everyone but the stories inside the story (again, haha, sorry but you’ll understand once you read the book) makes me hunger for more. One day I’ll definitely order the rest of the series.
On the last note. No matter the reasons why Maggie and Julian can’t be together romantically, I’m a a fan who roots for them and hope that they’ll one fall in-love.

The gloomy weather has once again forced me to do nothing but curl up and read. Thankfully, I saved some books for rainy days. The Retreat came in the mail a few weeks ago, and I’m sorry if I am posting my review just now. I just finished reading it, and man, it was awesome!
What Is It About?
Authors are challenged to write true-to-life crime novel set in the Philippines – crimes that haven’t been solved. They must finish the story, agree to have it edited and upon completion, they are guaranteed to get published with cash that would secure their retirement. Thing is, they are not allowed to breathe a word to anyone, else they’re out. Four authors got qualified – Simon, the crime writer, Maggie, the romance author, Rodney who writes paranormal and horror and Philip, who writes erotic literature. They are set to spend a week in a secluded island no one knew of to finish their manuscript. The question is, will all of them succeed? What lies behind this offer?
What I Think About It
Yeyet Soriano likes to make her readers think. Her book Turning Points, though it wasn’t for a quick read was something I just couldn’t put down because I was too curious about what would happen to the characters. Same thing happened here in The Retreat. The blurb itself got me thinking, and I was under the impression that all of the authors would die a tragic death in order for their stories to get resolution in the end. It’s a crime story anyway. But Yeyet had something else in mind. The book contained a lot of stories, stories that were written by her fictional authors, and though all of them were remarkable plots, there were some points that stayed with me and gave me chills. For one, it is just so sad to think that most people think suicide is actually an admission of guilt. There were other books I’ve read which viewed suicide as an act of the guilty, especially when the person is involved or accused of doing the crime. And the police stopping the investigation after someone takes responsibility for the crime committed? What if that person was forced to plead guilty? Maggie and Julian both had unfortunate childhoods, but Rodney? Rodney, the paranormal writer, had a good freakin’ reason why she wrote dark, grotesque stories. It kept me thinking, what if I have a friend who’s just like her? Maybe I could spare all my friends from the writing community but, what if?
In Conclusion
Anyway, is a short read (I was able to finish it in a couple of hours), but packed with scenes that are absolutely beyond what you can imagine in a crime story.
Should You Read It?
Calling the attention of crime readers out there! This book definitely has to find a place in your bookshelf! And even if you are not a crime reader, you still need to read this if you seek redemption.😀
Where to Get It?
The Retreat is available in Amazon for $2.99 and in Buqo for Php90. If you want a print copy, you can visit the author’s website and fill out an order form.
Happy reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2016(Excerpts of my review of The Retreat, posted on my blog*)
I read this story in 3 days--at various different times of the day. Like the other reviewer, I also had to stop after each chapter to process everything I’ve just read. Some of the crimes just feel too unbearable to take. There were 4 participants in the challenge--each one carried a different crime story they were involved in some way--which makes the crimes even more powerful to the reader. The stories the participants were writing were not just based on real life events; they were in the story. Then, they had to “finish” the story so it can get the final prize.
...
The story actually didn’t turn out the way I expected, which makes it a great Crime/Mystery novel--it totally misled me. Good thing though it ended on a positive note. I’ve always been afraid to read Crimes/Horrors because I didn’t want to feel unsettled the entire week after reading it but The Retreat gave me a very satisfying ending.
Honestly, I also thought the plot was a clever idea. Ms. Yeyet, must have enjoyed writing the also-writer characters embarking on a Mystery that could affect their lives forever.
Another thing I want to point out is that I loved the characters--they complimented each other perfectly...each character was well-developed...
I won’t be writing any more details in this review so my suggestion is just read it! I enjoyed it and I think you will too. :)
