The Raiders of Arakan: V Force and the Battle for Burma in World War Two (Daring Military Operations of World War Two) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 437 ratings

A stirring account of one of the bravest and most effective units in the fight against Japan in World War Two.

Ideal for readers of James Holland, E. B. Sledge and James H. Hallas.

By 1942 Guam, Wake Island, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Malaya, Singapore, and Burma had all fallen to Japanese forces.

On the Burmese-Indian border the Allies began their fight back, but to do so they needed to know the movements of the Japanese military.

V Force, under the leadership of Major Denis Holmes, was created as a reconnaissance, intelligence-gathering, and guerrilla organisation to become the eyes and ears of the Allied military.

Working with 3rd Commando Brigade, the 81st West African Brigade, and the support of local population, Holmes and his men were able to gather information and strike behind enemy lines. Their daring was remarkable, their information usually of exemplary accuracy and their speed instant.

C. E. Lucas Phillips uses Holmes’ own diary along with memoirs of various combatants to provide insight into these unconventional heroes, their impressive courage, and how their exhilarating exploits allowed the Allied forces to turn the tide against Japanese aggression.

‘It is time the story of their heroism was told, so that they may never be forgotten, and Brigadier Lucas Phillips has told it uncommonly well… I welcome this exciting book.’ from the Foreword by The Earl Mountbatten of Burma, KG

Author makes almost accurate description of Chittagong culture, the Naf river, the Mayu river and the Arakan region.

I like the way author enumerates the operations ‘Screwdriver’ and ‘Screwdriver 2’ in the Arakan region. Author also orients local words relating to cuisine (e.g., chop), hospitality of Chittagong and Arakan people. I also like the way author brings ‘monsoon’ as comtrol variable of battle intensity.

However, author should bring detailed discussion on battles of Imphal and Kohima.

Everything is well researched and explained in detail. I enjoyed learning about raids and action, but also felt could have been done with q lot fewer words. I sometimes found myself thinking come on let's get into the action.

Excellent book detailing the Battle for Burma by the British forces through the narrative of the leader of V force. A deep insight into a very overlooked corner of the war. Well written and follows a good pace. Well worth reading.

A place of nightmares where the weather, the bugs, a d the very terrain join hands with the enemy to try to kil you. Told factually by one who was there. Amazing courage and bravery were the norm and expected. A part of WW2 not much heard abojt. Very interesting and makes one proud to be British.

Many fought and died in Southeast Asia and little has been published about their service by Americans

With loyalty and determination the many British units both on land, sea and in the air were successful in holding the Japanese forces after great retreats and then rallying to defeat them

Thank you for filling in my knowledge of that section of World War II. It was a great read!

This narrative covers a very interesting sector in Britain's recovery in Malaysia and Burma. Much of the type of action was new to me and I found it absorbing.
