RAZOR SHARP (EMBRYO - A Raney & Levine Thriller Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 178 ratings

A Jack the Ripper type killer is murdering male prostitutes, with one exception...

A young woman is found brutally attacked with a straight razor, her cruel facial mutilation the only link to three other horrific murders: a transgender woman, a transvestite, and a 17-year-old hustler. So nasty are the kills of those three born-males that the psychopath seems to be saying,
they're all males...

FROM HELL he scrawls, taunting the NYPD with the words written in 1888 to the police by the original Jack the Ripper. The cops are sickened and at a loss: this killer is too cunning, wears gloves and disguises, leaves no physical evidence, and kills again.

Just one small favor, the police ask physicians Jill Raney and David Levine, friends and - until now, detectives on their own. "No warrant? No problem!" had been their mantra...until their relationship with the cops got crazy; led to exhaustion and conflict.

But they share the horror that grips the country and agree to help, thus plunging into a terrifying maze of psycho-sexual obsession and madness.

Complicating matters further is their adopted little son Jesse, dubbed "the miracle baby" by the media, now a sweet little chatterbox showing signs that he may have yet another special gift that Jill and David are only beginning to recognize...

    No Spoilers:

A person styling himself or herself as a modern day Jack the Ripper has killed 3 people; a transvestite, a male prostitute and a transgendered woman. The killings are particularly violent with the throat slashed with a razor, the face cut up and the prostate removed as a trophy. (Jack took his victims uteri as trophies).

It seems clear that the killer has a special hatred for transgendered and transvestites (perhaps for being “fake” women), but the pattern is broken when he or she kills Kimmie Clark, a “born-female.” One witness reports seeing a tall woman in a blond wig, but it is not at all clear if the killer is male or female or perhaps transgendered. The killer appears to return to pattern when he or she kills again.

Fortunately for the police, Doctors David Levine and Jill Raney are again on hand to lend their assistance, doing things the cops cannot legally do. Raney and Levine continue to be fascinating and compelling characters whom the reader cannot help but care about. I was pleased that there was a good amount of subplot involving Jesse. I have no idea where the author is going with this, but look forward to finding out in future books. The family scenes felt genuine and warm mixed with parental concern as to what is happening with their extraordinary son. I also liked that the ancillary characters, although not central to the plot, made appearances and were still involved in Raney, Levine and Jesse’s life.

Despite the killer thinking (or perhaps fantasizing) of killing both Raney and Levine they did not seem to be in any real danger. Nonetheless, tension was maintained by the uncertainty as to the identity of the killer and most importantly, whether he or she would strike again. (He or she did).

The story is really good and the characters are fantastic. As always with this series, I cannot wait for the next book.

This book was a little more gory than the earlier books in this series. I still liked the characters and the plot still kept me entertained, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone too squeamish.

    Great book as always by
JA Schneider. I would highly recommend this book and entire series, if you like suspense novels. Can be read as a single book out of order.

The title, RAZOR SHARP, describes not only the nature of the murders in this story, not only the slashing of the victims’ throats, and not only the precision of Jill Raney and David Levine in figuring out the identity of the illusive criminal. The title, to me, describes one more thing: the writing itself. It starts and ends on the squeal of a child: on the first page, the heart-wrenching cry of bloodied child for his mommy, who has been brutally murdered. On the last page Jesse, the three years old son of the two protagonists, “happily threw up his arms and squealed, ‘Wheeee’” Talk about bringing the arc of the story full circle around, and of drawing contrasts between dark and light, evil and good, cruelty and compassion.

Besides following the story from the point of view of the ‘good guys’ I enjoy the brief visits into the sickeningly fascinating mind of the ‘bad guy’: “You’re too close to dead,” thinks the criminal, annoyed with an innocent bystander, and then restrains the tone of thinking by whispering, “Cool it. Wait for the target.”

It is intense descriptions like, “bullets whined and cracked near them, splintering cement,” that make the story better than cinematic: You not only see the action but feel it in every one of your senses, in your guts.

    Five stars.

J.A. Schneider has moved to the top of the medical police thriller list. Razor Sharp is an edge of your seat read that doesn't disappoint. Drs Raney and Levine team up with police to try and stop the terror of a modern day Jack the Ripper. Strong characters will carry you along until the all too soon heart stopping end! Embryo 1 is my favorite with Razor Sharp a high 2nd.

Although I don't think doctors usually carry a gun and would spend most of their well-earned vacation in helping the police it was an interesting book to read

A must for all crime story fans. This as the other books by this author is exciting and keeps you guessing who is murdering people until almost the end. If you are new to this author I suggest you start with book one 'Embryo' and read the books in order. Each book stands alone but by starting with book one you learn about the characters which appear in all of them.
