About the author

Following retirement, after thirty-two years as a police officer, working mainly as a detective, Michael returned to the deadly business of murder, as a writer. His past work brought him very close to some nasty characters, including psychopaths, and gruesome cases and he draws on that experience to craft his novels: There is nothing gentle about Michael's stories.
His landmark novel 'Heart of the Demon', published in 2012, introduced Detective Sergeant Hunter Kerr. He has since written five novels and a novella featuring him. He also released the first of his DS Scarlett Macey books in 2016.
He is also the author of a stand alone crime novella 'Chasing Ghosts' and a true crime thriller 'Safecracker'.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2015A truly enjoyable plot and excellent realistic character portrayals. My one minor criticism is the devotion to much minute detail in process. I cannot claim expertise in literary criticism, but am slogging through the minutiae and ultimately skipping it to return to the suspense! Contrary to other criticism of grammar, I'm not finding fault with this and look forward to future work from author Fowler.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2014British police procedural on a optimistic point of view: police officers life is difficult, but not so much and families of police officers are wonderfully compreensive. Nice, if it was true...
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2015A convoluted tale with numerous strong characters. An evil brace of villiains and would-be villains. D.S. Hunter Kerr commands the stage with a sturdy supporting cast. This is my first Michael Fowler book but it will not be my last.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good content, less good style
I have the 4 Hunter Kerr novels and while I have enjoyed the well crafted crime stories, I have become increasingly irritated by the repetition of certain phrases 'unmarked CID car' his 'padded jacket', Grace's makeup and grey trouser suits. There are also numerous grammatical and vocabulary errors. Undetected murder instead of 'unsolved' etc.
If these kind of things don't bother you then you can enjoy these holiday reads and skip the 'samey' bits!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
Another excellent book in the Hunter Kerr series. As a serving police officer I applaud Michaels attention to procederual detail, but this shouldnt put you off these books. I would suggest starting with book 1 (Heart of the Demon) as the author builds the characters through each story. You really buy into Hunter and his collegues and I particularly like the way new characters are slowly introduced and then have bigger roles in later books.Excellent crime series.Looking forward to the next.
