Recusant is very well written and very well thought out. The Brin are evolved from birds and I can't help but wonder if the name Brin is a tribute to David Brin who happens to have written the best description of an intelligent avian culture I have ever read...up until now. If you love good science-fiction, Jim Cronin is a name you want to remember.

About the author
Hello! I am a retired Secondary Science teacher, currently working part-time at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, still following my love of science education.
I began my life as an author after retirement as a way to express myself in new and challenging ways. The result was beyond my wildest dreams. The Brin Archives is my scifi trilogy about time-travel, genetics, alien encounters, and the efforts of a small group of individuals to save the galaxy. Aeon Rises is my exploration into young adult scifi with the teenage hero facing an invasion of evil alien librarians.
To my surprise, and great honor, my books have earned critical acclaim through a number of awards for their quality writing and story telling. Most recently, I received the 2021 Book Excellence Finalist Award for Aeon Rises.
When I am not working or writing, I spend my time spoinling my five grandchildren rotten. After all, that is the job description of a grandpa, right?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2017Author Jim Cronin brings us the next chapter in the Brin Archives as three hundred years have passed since the Brin settled on their new homeworld but in that time the indigenous species had been turned into the slaves for the Brin mines but the Brin populace doesn't know this until one of the decedents of Karm and Jontor find out that the people that he had been searching for their history are still alive, this book is a great read and will make you think about our own culture, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy you won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2016I haven’t seen sci-fi and fantasy elements blended this well since George Lucas’s Star Wars series premiered so many moons ago. The sci-fi components of the story are impressive enough to satisfy hard sci-fi enthusiasts who just have to understand how things work, and who want a microscopic-level reveal of the nanobots, microtubules, laser cannons, and all the other wild tech on display. From space warping ships to planetwide-tech-destroying viruses launched from outerspace—all of which this story has and more, by the way… you better be able to show you know your stuff and how indeed this tech could be deployed realistically. What’s more, you have to get through it without losing readers who are more given to the fantasy side of things and less concerned with the technology end of things. So kudos to the writer as this is no easy task.
The story isn’t told in a straight forward fashion, but through flashbacks that span hundreds and thousands of years, and that only give pieces of the puzzle at a time. So cautious, attentive reading is required. But as the conspiracy unravels, political treachery comes into focus, and a rich, intricate tale unfolds. The author put a lot of time into imagining the ins and outs of his world, and his world building is both in-depth and thorough.
If this is heady sci-fi/fantasy it’s also fun-filled. The adventure elements reminded me of the Indiana Jones franchise, or at least our hero did with his background in archeology and his loathing of the classroom and his love for getting out in the field where the artifacts are to be found, but where also to be found are many nefarious parties out to do you in for the same precious finds.
If far future space operas are you thing, you will be well served here.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2016An engrossing story set in a well-developed world. The Brin and the Kolandi both felt very real for me. Both species' complex struggles for survival and power - separately and intertwined - were thoughtfully crafted and deftly written. I am a true fantasy/sci-fi lover and I have a deep soft spot for richly imagined fantastic stories with a generous undercurrent of science. I enjoyed the story immensely and recommend to all other fantasy/sci-fi fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017This was a new fantasy world for me that Cronin introduced. I liked the fact that I hadn't needed to read Book 1 in the series to get my head, quickly, around the world, the characters and their ancestors.
I enjoyed this tale of two cultures colliding and, of course, was able to draw parallels with many human issues here on Earth, as all good fantasy novels will allow you to do. The book explores racism, prejudice, greed, the greater good and of course, love.
I enjoyed this book and can definitely recommend it to fantasy/sci-fi fans alike and even people who just like a good adventure story with a few morals along the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2017While this is book two in the series, it worked for me as a stand-alone novel. The story follows two races, the Brin and the Kolandi, through time. The world is well-introduced and intriguing. The issues dealt with in the narrative are similar to many of those in our current world, such as greed and hatred. Sometimes the flashbacks got a bit intrusive, but they were usually well-crafted and gave lots of fascinating background story into the history of the world and ancestors of the characters. This is a well-written science fiction dystopian adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2016Brilliant.
Last year, surprisingly as it's not my favourite genre, this author's debut novel Heigra was one of my most enjoyed reads and if anything he has upped the game in this, his second book. It can be read as a stand alone but it is part of a planned series.
I like his books because I find them so easy to read. The world created is fantastic yet very grounded and believable. Intelligent commentary is made about the strengths and weaknesses of humanity in a totally natural way. And finally I find the author makes the genre easily accessible and I don't feel like I need a phd in applied science to understand the story.
Whether you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy or not this is a great read about prejudice, fear of the unknown and greed versus compassion and respect for different races wrapped up in an intriguing and exciting story. Can't wait for the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2017I am completely hooked on the Brin Archives! I was so happy to learn that a second book was being written after I finished the first one! Mr. Cronin has such an active imagination and it makes these books come to life in your mind. Recusant deals with so many social and political issues, that cause intense emotional response from the reader, you have no choice but to immerse yourself in the world your reading about. Whether you love science fiction or not, you will enjoy these books! I can't wait to read book number 3!!
