Red Dust (Vietnam Ground Zero Military Thrillers Book 13) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 658 ratings

Captain Gerber’s elite Green Berets infiltrate North Vietnam! Perfect for fans of Andrew Watts, L. T. Ryan, Don Keith and George Wallace.

Will the Special Forces team make it out of NVA territory alive?

Vietnam, 1968

American intelligence indicates that a village in North Vietnam is being used as a staging area for NVA troops.

U.S. Army Special Forces
Captain Mack Gerber and a team of Green Beret commandos undertake a covert mission to the North to plant some “tulips” along key routes. These electronic listening devices will detect troop movement and allow intelligence analysts to monitor enemy infiltration routes into the South.

It’s a dangerous operation behind enemy lines and Gerber and his men must remain undetected if they are to stand any chance of making it out alive.

And if any member of the team is captured, he’s on his own.

Red Dust describes the conditions that our men had to endure to fight in Vietnam. The Special Forces has a great way to adapt their fighting style to the mission and the army they would be facing. There were advisers for the North Vietnams from both China and Russia with their own methods of fighting.

After a week in the Central Highlands, my watch stopped working. As a UH-1H pilot, I certainly had not been crawling through the mud as depicted in these stories. But mailed the watch to my wife, visiting in Japan, for repair.!I received it a few weeks later, ticking fine, with this note: “The watch man asked where the watch had been, as it was full of fine red dirt.” And I still had such dirt on my scalp, in spite of always wearing my flight helmet and showering nearly every night. By the way, a Huey has only one engine, not “engines” as sometimes written in this series. A thing, but not a big thing.

    Good book

This book held my interest. Although this is fiction, the mission could have been something close to real. The SOG MACV did some highly classified, no one talked operations.

I love all the Eric Helm's Ground Zero books. I had a complete set when they first came out. I would wait and look forward to them arriving at the book store. I lost the set during a move and I amd just getting around to reordering each of them so I can reread them and pass them one to a hounger generation who doesn't know anything about the Vietnam War. I would also suggest getting the DVD set of Tour of Duty. There are 3 seasons worth and I watch them over and over again.

Interesting story of the team going on a mission in to North Vietnam. Had a couple of side stories about a downed pilot and a tiger.

A trip into NV to plant listening devices along the Ho Chi Min trail becomes a hassle as the are parachuted into the wrong area ans have to hike a distance to their objective.

Eric Helm is the pseudonym of two Vietnam war veterans. They tell it like it was, a great read.

1.0 out of 5 stars not as good as others (which are good reads)in series.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 10, 2021
The book seems to be out of timeline of the series. Events and people are somehow earlier than the first books, even so the book is supposed to be later in the series sequence. Confusing. It also for some reason seems to be far less well written, possibly by a different author? The characters are by comparison to earlier books, are not well described, and the plot is weak.Fetterman and Gerber in particular lose out. the author also seems to have slipped into a macho world which was not present in earlier books- the tone jars and reduces the quality.
