- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOmg! I love old movies & I LOVE this story!!! I want to open an old theatre!!! We need more old time class & sass in our world!!! ❤️❤️❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved the Esmerelda Theater and the old movies mentioned in the story. I have always loved White Christmas! Romance, Oregon goes all out for Christmas.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is an easy, light read to just sit back an enjoy. Marianne owns the old movie theater where she shows nothing but old movies. She really gets into these old movies, often dressing the part. Jack Morgan, a man sent to do a report on the theater, called it a passion. I thought obsession might have been more accurate. She had applied to get the theater declared a landmark, and Jack's job was to report it worthy of unworthy. Marianne has a mystery pen pal who seems interested in her. But so does Jack seem interested. It is enjoyable even if I do think Marianne is a little nuts. Light, easy, and quick. I liked it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a cute story that I enjoyed about Jack investigating the local theater for historical status. He meets the owner but can't tell her who he is.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2019Format: KindleOur heroine is the owner of the local movie theater in the town of Romance. Our hero is from the historical society investigating whether or not the theater should be declared an historical landmark. What happens is like something out of the movies.
This was a fun romantic read, almost a romantic comedy, but definitely sweet and clean. The plot is well done and easy to follow, but the characters are what make the book. I particularly loved out heroine and her encyclopedic knowledge of old movies. I found myself added several to my "must watch" list as I read along.
So come to romance and watch our couple fumble their way to a solid and well deserved HEA.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2018Format: PaperbackThis is a wonderful book. First time I have read anything from J.J DiBenedetto and it sure will not be my last.
Enjoyed all the references to the old movies in the book and how the characters knew each other but did not know who they were corresponding with. Jack comes to town to evaluate a business. Marianne could not know why he was there since it was her business he was evaluating I could feel myself in the book with them especially with the movies. Nothing better than cozying up with a nice sweet clean book on a cold winter day.
If you love the movie You Got Mail then you will love this book. With it taking place with all the wonderful things that goes on for an old fashion Christmas just makes it so much better.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2018Format: PaperbackA Reel Christmas in Romance is one of those romantic stories that draws you in with the warmth of feeling it generates, that hidden snigger of satisfaction when you know something that nobody else does and you have to reign in your impatience to see whether you got it right or not. And actually it does not even matter whether you got it right or not, you are happy and delighted and dreamy eyed anyhow as A Reel Christmas in Romance is a real old time kinda romantic story without sex or twisted or skewed relationships. It touches the heart for all the right reasons. And you can imagine yourself in place of Jack. Or Marianne.
The women are going to love this book to bits. Even I, a crusty old 65 year old male and one not often reading a romance, was smiling broadly all along from start to.finish. Enjoy!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2018Format: KindleMarianne Carter owns the only movie theater in the town of Romance, the Esmeralda Theater, and like her father and grandfather before her, shows only classic movies--nothing after 1955. It's a labor of love, as well as her business.
Jack Nelson is with the state historical commission, sent to evaluate the theater and Marianne's application to have it designated an historic landmark. He has to do this without Marianne knowing, or becoming too friendly with her, because he has to not only be objective, but be seen to be objective.
The Duck Man is Marianne's anonymous email pen pal, new in town and a little general about exactly what he does, but a delight to chat with in email. She, also, remains anonymous.
Esme is Jack's anonymous email pen pal. She's a pleasure to converse with in email, and, since it's clear she works at the Esmerelda, a useful contact. Right? Jack, too, remains anonymous.
Any fan of old movies with recognize a new reworking of the endlessly satisfying, fun, romantic plot of The Shop Around the Corner. (Or In the Good Old Summertime, or She Loves Me, or You've Got Mail. Yes, I've enjoyed all of them. More than once.)
DiBenedetto does a good job with it. Jack and Marianne are both likable, solid characters, and this story is true to the source without following it slavishly. It's just a lot of fun.
Recommended.
I received a free electronic galley of this book from--someone. Probably the author. There have been a lot of distractions around here lately, and I enjoyed the book without worrying about extraneous details. In any case, I'm reviewing it voluntarily.
