Resolute Action (Sam Ryan Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

Military cop, Sam Ryan is back in another high-octane thriller.

When an elite Royal Australian Navy clearance diver is gunned down on the streets of Sydney, the local police think it’s part of a drug war between local outlaw motorcycle gangs, and with all the offenders either dead or in custody they’re quick to close the book on their case.

Tasked with running a parallel military investigation, Ryan isn’t convinced. Something isn’t right, and he’s sure the local cops have missed something.

Ryan is determined to learn the truth and soon finds himself on the trail of a ruthless people-smuggling syndicate with ties to a foreign military. From the underworld of Kings Cross, to the waters off northern Australia and into exotic Indonesia, Ryan is propelled into a life-threatening race to hunt down those responsible—but can he get hold of them before he too becomes a statistic?

Compelling and authentic, this thrilling military crime novella from Australian writer Liam Saville is another absolute must-read.

Royal Australian Navy special operations diver Nathan MacDonald, moonlighting as a nightclub bouncer, is viciously gunned down by a biker gang in Sidney's Kings Cross. Since the biker gang is involved in the drug trade, the local police assume MacDonald was also peddling drugs. Australian Army Captain Sam Ryan, however, finds it hard to believe that a member of Australia's equivalent of a U.S. Navy SEAL team would be involved with drug dealing.

Ryan, an investigator with the Australian Defense Force Investigative Service, begins a parallel investigation into MacDonald's death which leads to the discovery of a packet of evidence the sailor had collected against two Navy officers he suspected of being involved in the smuggling of Indonesian refugees. Ryan's probe takes him uncover, first aboard a Navy patrol boat in the middle of smuggling waters, then to Indonesia to hunt down the former Indonesian army officer who ordered MacDonald's murder.

I was a great fan of author Liam Saville's first Sam Ryan novella, Predator Strike! I am no less enthused about Resolute Action. Saville, a former Australian Army officer and police officer, brings great realism to his mystery work. His writing style is straightforward and accessible, á la Dasheill Hammet. Sam Ryan is a true military officer, dedicated to his work and to Australia's service members. He also believes in justice, even when it can't be obtained in the normal way. Likable and approachable, Ryan also harbors a sharp edge which sometimes makes him step over the line to get the job done.

Anyone who is a fan of Nelson Demille's Army investigator Paul Brenner series will enjoy Resolute Action.

I originally ordered this book because it included a sequence aboard a RAN Armidale class patrol boat--of which I am a fan. Although only a few pages of the book deals with the boat, I enjoyed the entire book. Too many military adventure books abound in "cool sounding" wannabe lingo. This novel rang true while avoiding the usual stereotypes. Well written and credible.

...a refreshing novella in a direct, punchy writing style for a genre that can all too easily become cliched in the wrong hands... Saville’s no-frills military investigator, Sam Ryan, gets the job done in the best way possible... sniffing out, then taking out the bad guys... a killing in Australia’s notorious Kings Cross night-time clubland, leads to a corrupt trail of people-trafficking and drug running... senior officers in the Australian Navy and high-ranking counterparties in the Indonesian military are implicated, but Ryan has to find evidence, risking his own life in the process... easily readable in one sitting as I did...

Liam Saville’s second Sam Ryan novella sees the military investigator working on the case of the brutal murder of an elite Royal Australian Navy Clearance Diver. Uncovering a people-smuggling syndicate with links to the Indonesian military, Ryan again finds himself in the line of fire.

Sam Ryan is a likeable hero, getting the job done without being an over the top macho caricature. He follows the rule of law, but bends it if he has to. Saville’s writing is fluid, the characters believable and the locations depicted with a fresh vivacity. From Sydney to the high seas to Indonesia, the narrative is compelling.
In a world of heroes it’s nice to have an Australian one.

This novella began with promise. Captain Sam Ryan of the AFDIS is a former New South Wales homicide detective. He is a direct commission lateral entry into AFDIS, tasked with investigation of serious crime within the Australian armed forces. So far, so good.
An off duty navy diver working as a bouncer is
murdered by outlaw bikers captured after a shootout w alert police. So far. So good.
Sam is the liaison to the NSW Police inquiry. The police believe the diver is involved w drug trafficking. Sam does not. He discovers info that the murder victim may have uncovered mischief in the Australian Navy. He goes undercover on a patrol boat posing as a rookie FIsheries Officer. He discovers evidence tending to support the murder victim's suspicions. So far, so good.
Then the novella simply goes off the rails.
I can say no more without revealing too much.
I won't say spoiling. The author takes care of spoiling.
Promising beginning that degenerates into farce.
