About the author

Ruth Collis sculpts with thicker paints to unreal dimensions by often using cake decorating tips and is most excited to share some of these discoveries through her online courses, books, and social media.
Her interest in dimensional creations started when walking home from school in Junior High once, and seeing a line of bubble gum stuck to the wall, but noticing all the colors in particular. In college burnout years later, she remembered those gum colors and gathered all sorts of bubble gum flavors to make this artistic scene of flowers along a bay of sailing boats that looks like clay, but was not clay, and the sugary aroma told you so. That was also made in the middle of ant season where she had to move the piece every night until finding a way to store it.
Ruth Collis wanted to feel like she was alive, and so began to pursue her dreams, that many feel they can't do. Ruth feels there are too many exciting wonders to discover and show in her lifetime, where there's no room to not live in your potential.
Opposition started her out as she pushed through each environment that didn't seem to fit her and falling in love with Pismo Beach, California more each time she visited, she wrote a book about all the town's wonders, then eventually found a way to live there in the diverse beauty that inspires so much of her art with all the sculptable mediums available from gritty sand textures to pourable paint that resembles lava.
She talks about her origin story further in her Collectors site newsletter, what gave her the pastry decorating tips with thick paint idea, and how she later evolved to a more permanent acrylic form, but still using 3D techniques. She invents a lot of sculptural forms, techniques, and tools, that have opened up a whole new way of creating for artists and imagination of possibilities for collectors to be part of. Her work has been published in magazines and on display in shows at the Art Center in Morro Bay.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2014It takes quite something to master the art of acrylic painting. Ruth Collins seems to have not only mastered it but has come up with easy tips and tricks to help others. I liked the tip on how to create rosettes in a raised 3D look. What’s amazing is that you only have to use pastry tools and there is no need of trips to expensive art supply stores.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2014For any artist, this is a great idea, easy step by step guide to make rosettes......If you want to be original in your art then go for it. Super book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2014This is so fun! I would have never thought to make cake decorating into a painting. This has easy to follow instructions and great tips.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2014I took Ruth's Udemy course "How To Paint a 3D Sculptural Rose" and was won over by how warm and inviting she was as she explained all of the steps one would take to create a 3D sculptural rose and, therefore, how to get started with your own sculptural painting. This book is a perfect follow-up to that course but also stands on its own as an even more detailed exploration of this exciting painting technique.
The text is clear and easy to follow and the pictures really help the reader understand the steps and what to expect. Ruth also gives the reader lots of ideas for what other things are possible, beyond impasto rosettes. So, have fun with the techniques carefully and loving outlined in Ruth's guide (or through her course).
I should point out that I am not a painter per se, I used to do some painting when I was younger but haven't touched a canvas or paints in quite some time. Ruth has definitely inspired me to change that as soon as I can find the time! :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2014Having been familiar with all the cake decoarating tools Ms. Collis talks about made it very easy for me to follow her directions and instructions really well. This method of painting is a wide open field, very imaginative and innovative. One could go wild with the many uses of the left over paint leathers if there are any. Being demensional people we are never satisfied with flat surfaces. Ms Collis gives us an alternative way to create demension and use our God given talent to create beyond the norm.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2015Wonderful book, i did not know how hard making Impasto Rosettes would be but it was easy once i read this book. Short but concise. I would recommend.
