About the author

James Harper is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the wildly popular Evan Buckley crime thrillers. His novels weave tales full of mystery, non-stop action and edge-of-your-seat suspense with laugh-out-loud humor and a touch of romance, and feature maverick private-eye Evan Buckley and his sometimes partner in crime, Detective Kate Guillory.
For the past twenty-five years James has lived in a 400 year old cottage in the woods with his wife and their cats, Leonard and Lily. In his spare time James does what he’s told (if he knows what’s good for him) and likes touring Europe on his motorbike.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024Good plot and twist in the story. I've liked all books so far, he's really a great character Evan.
But the big thing **spoiler alert** finally happened. Just great that E. and G. just got down to it. Been waiting for it. :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025My favorite thus far in the Buckley series and better character development and less violence. In prior series there seemed to be a lot of violent beatings. Am probably not one of the writer's usual readers (a woman).
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2021James Harper does it again! Rough Justice is the perfect blend of plotlines that advance the ones started in previous books in the series and those that introduce new characters and an almost unbelievable new case. This book is enjoyable on its own but nothing quite compares to the satisfaction of smoothly transitioning from the previous books to this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2020The plot is complex and very craftily woven to permit reasonable assumptions and expectations which the author carefully promotes, then disassembles quickly but not abruptly. No sudden shocking changes to confront an engrossed reader–no need for seat belts, parachutes, or barf bags.
Harper gives us a few villans worthy of our outrage and disgust. And some bad guys who have some good qualities. Sadly, there are no Atticus Finches, but the two primary protagonists are endearing.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021You think you will be going down one road for the novel and end up in a totally different state and mind. A fast paced search for who done what to who when. And pennies only drop at the end. This is a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2022This is a complicated story with as many twists and turns as a spaghetti bowl. I almost quite reading twice, but just had to go back and find out what happened. Mystery readers will really like this 9th novel of the series
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2022This time Evan Buckley travels to Maine as part of a case he was hired to solve. This case hasn't been solved in two decades. Can he do it?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2020Evan has actually turned into a pretty good detective, solving a very cold case and he did not get beat up in every chapter! It was an interesting read and I enjoyed it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Evan Buckley story
Great read again, i am hooked! The whole series still keeps me wanting more. Sometimes a bit too violent, but still a believeable character and some interesting other recurring characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant
James Harper is a Genius. Book 9 in the Evan Buckley Thriller Series is AMAZING!!!! It starts slowly as he drip feeds us on another journey with Evan and Guillory. Who at last stop teasing each other and 'get it on'. He lays out tidbits for us to follow leaving us guessing throughout the book as to which questions are to be answered in this one. He does not disappoint. I thought Evan might finally get the answers as to where his wife is - but no he had other ideas for his readers. He left us wondering what has happened to Caleb, and what role is Crow really playing in all of this. We are given some conclusions but other clues remain unanswered with not quite enough information to work it out and once again we wait with bated breath on the next novel in this series. I for one am grateful for the talents of James Harper.
I received a free ARC copy from the author for which I voluntarily leave this honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I personally think James Harper's books are excellent, each one better than the last. Don't have to read them in order but it pays to. Reminds me of Mickey Spillane books.
