Choices: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

Mateo, Albert share something in common. They were forced to embrace a change in their career thus making them lust for their passion silently. Will history repeat again? They ask themselves when Albert's son, Leonardo, a young man is standing on a crossroad of life, facing choices. He has a few questions that all of us have encountered when facing choices that can change our lives.

Does fate make a man, or do his desires? Do ambitions and desires actually lead a person to true happiness and fulfillment, or does providence and life changing events actually show a person the true path to follow?

‘Choices’ raises these questions, and attempts to answer them as it presents a slice of life, narrated straight from the heart.

The story is that 2 diverse immigrant families and yet how being in this country they held on to thier values and how those values made them choose a path that was not their "Dream" coming to this country.

The author has provided a good insight to how we grow up with a path drawn out by our parents or what our surroundings provide and the "Choices" we end up making.

I connected with so many characters in this story, but most of all I connected with Amelia. As a widow who recently lost her husband, the emotions and agony she was going through was all too familiar to me. I wanted to reach out and hug her. I connected with Leonardo who while he wanted to be there for his mom, he also had to keep on going which allowed Amelia to keep on going. Albert was a good man and didn't deserve what happened to him, but unfortunately bad things do happen to good people. I enjoyed the story, but felt the beginning half could have used a bit more drama. Bravo to the author!

This book gives us a peek into the world of an immigrant family from Portugal, who moved to US in hopes of a better life. Albert, Amelia, and their teenage son, Leonardo, are a pretty close knit family. They are not rolling in riches, but are immensely happy with their lives.

Albert is the warden of a correctional facility for convicts, and is dedicated to making a positive difference in their lives. Amelia is a homemaker, whose main ambition in life is to take care of her family, and Leonardo is a brilliant student, who is pursuing his dream of becoming a computer engineer.

One day, their lives take a pretty sharp, unexpected turn. How they deal with it, is what the rest of the novel is about.

    What I liked:

    1. Choices is a simple, yet touching story, woven around the everyday life of this family, and it captures the reader’s imagination easily, as the situations and conversations that the author describes, are things that all of us experience on a day-to-day basis.

    2. The plot is relatively unpredictable, which makes the reader curious to read more.

    3. It is an easy, fast read.

    What could have been different:

    1. The book is written in present tense, and while grammatically there is nothing wrong with it, I don’t enjoy this style of writing. I wouldn’t necessarily hold it against the book, as some people might enjoy this style; just a matter of personal preference.

    2. There are several characters and POVs introduced; some of them are not relevant to the plot. And speaking of relevance, the first 3 chapters of the book focus on Mateo and Maria (with a lot of detailing), who are secondary characters, and do not really matter much in the grand scheme of things in this book. This should have been re-worked by the author to ensure that the book starts off with the protagonists.

    3. Most importantly, the book required a strong hand at editing. There are punctuation errors in several places (I normally do not point out punctuation errors unless there are quite a few of them). Some things are described in excessive detail, for instance - Maria’s delivery (which is not relevant to the plot, and she is not even the protagonist).

    Overall:

This book has a simple, yet very thought provoking premise, and is a very honest attempt by the author at weaving a tale about choices and consequences. Tighter editing would have made this a far more satisfying read.

Disclaimer: I was given this book by the author in exchange of an honest review.

The story is well organized and is very easy to read with neat character sketches. I actually felt the characters while reading the novel. Fate and destiny plays a major role in our life which brings us on the cross-roads. If Leonardo didn't lose his father so early, he would have made a different . I love the great bonding between Leonardo and his parents.

I really like the big font size, which is good for a person like me who does only bedtime leisure reading. Overall an excellent read. I wish you all the best in your future endeavor, Ruchira!!

This book was a good read. The story captures your imagination easily as the characters evolve through challenges, desires and conflicts similar to what most of us have experienced, ultimately driven to the choices we make by faith and hope. An honest-to-goodness effort by the author Ruchira Khanna.

What a wonderful story, and Ruchira tells it so well. I enjoyed reading every word of this 25 chapter book, and the generation switch it covers. The author keeps two threads running in parallel, intertwined, balanced and fast moving. The story is stimulating, particularly through the details that makes it relevant to the characters, and possibly you. :) Enjoy.

I am on a reading spree last two days and this book was on my TBR list since long.

An honest and commendable attempt by the Ruchira where she talks about destiny, and the choices that define the future of an individual.

I loved the cover which shows a road going in two directions, indicating choices.

I don't know whether anyone else faces this issue, but books written in present tense always drags for me initially. Perhaps I am old school, but I find a book easier to read and memorable when it is written in past tense.
This book started slowly hence for me but I liked the way the story unfolded and especially the character of Leanardo and his closely knit family.
Very well done for a first novel.
