Rum and Notes (Love After Midnight Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 425 ratings

My life was boring until I met him.

Painfully tedious, pathetically lonely, and I absolutely hated it.

But I was too scared to do anything about it. Too scared to change . . . at least until I met Kace.

I should have been terrified of him—scared of his size (he towered over my short, curvy self), freaked out by the fierce tats covering his arms and torso (they even crawled up his neck), and definitely frightened by the angry scowl he unleashed on anyone who dared to disrupt him (though this happened rarely, it still did happen).

Except, Kace seemed to like me—shy, boring, socially inept me. He couldn’t change the tats or the towering, but he rarely unleashed his trademark scowl on me.

Okay, so maybe it was more like he tolerated me, but regardless, Kace didn’t seem to care that I hung around the bar he worked at, putting my night owl tendencies to work as I wrote.

See, my work was the only place I explored. My safe place to write as dirty and steamy and kinky of books as I wanted.

My readers loved them—loved the hot sex, the tough alphas, the guaranteed happy endings. As thus, I made good money, only somewhat because I was a decent writer, but mostly because my imagination was very active, beyond active . . . some might even say too active.

As for me personally? I’d never experienced anything close to the types of things I wrote.

But I’d decided it was time to change that.

With scowly, sexy, terrifying Kace.

A Must Read!
Since discovering Elise Faber, I’ve found my happy place reading her books. “Rum and Notes” her latest release is a deliciously sweet, slow burn romance that will leave you smiling from page 1. Brooke is a thirty something, stuck in the eighties, curvaceous redheaded, romance writer. Needing a place to write she takes up residence at a bar not to far from her apartment. The bar provides her with the perfect spot to work and it provides inspiration for her alpha male characters. Kace - sexy bartender extraordinaire, has no problem getting attention from the ladies, except it would seem, from the one woman he’s been pining after for the last six months. Patient to a fault, he waits to strike. When the opportunity presents itself, he takes advantage of it. Brooke writes romance but has never experienced it first hand, until Kace. Kace has never had a family or a woman who cares for him, until Brooke. Together they become what the other needs, wants, craves, deserves - a match made in romance writing heaven. TBR this fantastic book and fall in love with Brooke and Kace. (I read an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.)

I read a bunch of the hockey series earlier this year after a Facebook ad hooked me with the first book free, ordered the rest of the series, got distracted by life, and occasionally noticed them in my library.
Had the chance to earn free coins by checking out 3 chapters of this book on one of those reading apps.
Next thing I know, I hopped over to Kindle and finished this book for free.
Now I’m off to read the rest of this series 🎉

Quirky heroine, sweet alpha male, steamy chemistry, and just a twinge of drama, with a fabulous HEA, and a hook into the next story.

ALL THE THINGS I love about a romance 💕🥰

This was such a short, sweet, and sexy read that lightly touched on deeper themes. I appreciated how the characters’ past experiences weren’t just dumped on us but woven seamlessly into the story as we got to know them better. Brooke was grappling with unresolved grief, which deeply impacted how she acted and whom she trusted. Kace had his own baggage from his upbringing, shaping who he was. Brooke had lost so much and hadn’t pushed through the pain, doubting her worth and beauty, especially next to someone as "hot" as Kace. But she was so much more than she realized, especially when she finally allowed herself to shine.

Now, Kace—what a great character. He was sweet, kind, and definitely hot, with every woman in town noticing him. His past may have defined him in some ways, but he truly came alive with Brooke. Their journey to each other was beautiful, with shy Brooke and alpha Kace making a surprisingly fun and dynamic pair. They were an unexpected match, but it worked so well!

This story had just the right blend of sweetness and steam. The contrast between Brooke, the shy author, and Kace, the alpha bartender with a heart of gold, made for a really strong connection and sizzling chemistry. That said, Kace tended to overuse the endearment "Babe," sometimes turning it into a one-word sentence, which felt odd. Personally, I prefer "Baby" over "Babe," but that’s just my preference!

The drama at times felt a bit unrealistic, but it was also believable in the sense that, yes, people really do act this way. I was shaking my head the whole time. Overall, I really enjoyed this read. It was a solid story with plenty to keep me engaged, and I’m definitely intrigued enough to continue to the next book in the series.

This was a great read! I really enjoyed Kace and Brooke's interactions, especially when he figures out what she does at the bar. There were lots of funny, emotional, and steamy moments. I will be reading the next as I really liked Brent in this read. I really enjoy Elise Faber's books since I read the first, now on my fourth and have enjoyed every single one.

I have read a couple of books by this Author.. My favorite being Bad Night Stand so I was looking for some pretty amazing stuff with this one here. It just never happened. The book was short, then started slow, finished early and was lacking in between. I gave it 2 1/2 stars because I know how good it COULD HAVE BEEN and know what the author is actually capable of. This was disappointing but the plot was still really good.

This story hit all the marks. It has a strong alpha (a couple of them actually, but that's fodder for another story) a strong heroine, a good story line that flows, editing-meh, and great character development. You get the feeling that you really know these people. A very enjoyable read. I recommend this if you like romance at all.

Such a great story intro! This definitely had me invested and I could not put this book down. The characters were interesting, the story moved along quickly but worked well. I loved that they spent time getting to know each other. Kace and Brooke were such great characters and I cannot wait to see what happens with Brent and his mystery woman.

Brooke is an author, she writes sexy novels in a bar, Kace is the bartender. She doesn't write from knowledge, it's all her imagination. Kace has been watching her for months, trying to decide if it's the right time to make an advance.
A really amusing read, I loved it and recommend it.
