WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS

Fiction has the power to change lives.

Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.

But there are messages within the messages.

There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.

Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.

This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.

THE LOWDOWN

Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.

In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.

In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

My time in the Corps began in March, 1967. From North of Detroit, I was told to take 16 other recruits to MCRD San Diego. I believe I was favored with this task as I was the only member to have enlisted for four years of active duty. I was not a poster boy Recruit. My physical skills usually left me second from last on runs. I was on the platoon weak squad until I was the first to qualify Rifle Expert with an M-14. Redemption at last. We proceed to hand to hand combat training. Two sides of boots in columns opposing each other. I went through three of my platoon's biggest Recruits in two quick movements each. The instructor was speechless. My D.I. came out and yanked me, protesting, off the mat. I wanted to finish of the next six men. I had gained the respect of those who'd outrun me so many times. When we got the Pugil Stick training, the D.I.'s made me Company Runner so I wouldn't ruin their session. I graduated and was sent to S. Vietnam in early December. The XO of Hotel Company, 2nd Btn/7th Reg., liked what he read in my file and placed me in his former platoon, 3rd. We survived the 1968 Tet Offensive, earning a Presidential Unit Citation, and became a Btln. Landing Team (BLT). We flew in CH-47s off the deck of LPH-10, the Tripoli into hot spots as they occurred. Every Marine serving together is a brother to his fellow Marines. Years later, at a Memorial get together for a fallen Marine, I met that former XO and his lovely wife. We became close and I would stop in to visit enroute to see my family out of state. After years of working, I retired and looking for busy work, while I was pumping gas into my vehicle, I was asked by a Marine if my cover (hat) was a real Marine one. He asked me to his VFW Post, 1008. I liked what I saw and joined. A month later I also joined the Marine Corps League. I served as the Post Service Officer for seven years. I've been the CO of my League Detachment, 570, for 1 having done so for three previously. It's been 53 years since I joined the Corps and I, like all my fellow Marines, still serve. Some are in better condition, some have family issues, but when any of us meet up, we are brothers and sisters. That was the goal of Boot Camp. This short story got me going, I couldn't put it down. Extremely well one and a good read.
    Semper Fi.

This is a great book that gives the user a little bit of insight into the main character of the series at the beginning of the 2nd half of his life.

I would like to see this portion of Cal's life expanded to further "flesh out" the character as he grows into the person he is in the rest of the Corps Justice series.

Like all of the Corps Justice books, this is a fun, easy to read book with a good story line and believable characters.

The more of these Corps Justice books I read, the better they are getting.

If you enjoyed this book, then you need to check out the rest of the Corps Justice series!

Mr Cooper has a winner in The Corps Justice series. I have never served myself but have been a dependant growing up a "Navy Brat". My dad served 30 years and we lived all over the world in that 30 years and he was stationed aboard the Missouri when the "Peace Treaty" was signed with Japan in Pearl Harbor ending the war. After being a Navy Brat I became a Navy wife. I say that only to let you know that the dependant serve our country too and deserve our thanks and support too.

Having been there and done that, Mr. Cooper has been there too. Wonderful story and wonderful writing. Don't pass this one or the next one because they are short stories because they lay the groundwork for the series. Mr. Cooper told me that this is Book 1 and God Speed is Book 2, also a short story that takes place on 9-11.
Every page leaves me wanting more.

In RUNNING, we find Recruit Calvin Stokes, Jr. in the third week of Marine Corps boot camp at MCRD Parris Island, S.C. just over a month after the loss of his parents on Flight 77 on September 11, 2001.
Recruit Stokes, as might be expected, is on a mission, highly motivated, laser focused, and looking toward a bright future in The Corps. Except he's going about it all wrong.
Cal fully expects to be chosen for Force Recon shortly after boot camp, and is not shy about saying so. But Cal has forgotten he cardinal rule of being a Marine. 'Marines take care of their own.' And his fellow recruits have had enough of his bullying and bravado.
And this is where things take a turn. Cal's bright future begins to dim, and things in general begin to go a wee bit sideways for the current crop of recruits at Parris Island.
But it's all good. And, whether such things occurred post-911 or not, it's a stroke of genius on the part of author C.G. Cooper.

I had finished reading Cooper's Adrift and LOVED IT! In checking out what other books he had written in the Corp Justice Series I came across God-Speed and this book Running. Both short stories and both about Cal prior to Back to War. I read God-Speed first and just finished Running. I'm getting ready to delve into Back to War. Both books give you some background and a glimpse into what drives Cal to do what he does and what helped shape him into the person he became. This book brought back many memories of my days in the military at boot camp and how you had to be a team player. There was no way you could get through boot camp by being a loner. My heart was breaking for this vulnerable young man who seemed to have so many conflicting emotions that he kept bottled up inside. It makes me wonder how many of the young men and women who signed up after 9/11 did so because of losing a loved one that day.

A great short story, no one really knows what has happened in another's life, unless they choose to share. Sometimes we act out of character, due to our baggage. Really would love to read the next Corp Justice short, but not available in the UK.
