Combining action with critique, this urban thriller engages with social controversies in 21st century Britain: racial prejudice, sexual grooming, populist politics and policing. Its conflicts take place on a human scale, without stereotyped heroes and villains. Everybody makes mistakes and nobody is innocent. Elli is greedy for the attention she gets from her boyfriend, Amir, but that’s not how he sees their relationship at all. Ayesha is determined to establish her British Muslim identity but does not know the extent to which she will be tested. The Great Whites talk about pride in history and community, but their actions are crudely racist and conceal other, unspoken motives. DI Mason and DS Bent carry their own experiences of abuse and discrimination into this minefield of exploitation and manipulation. So much anger, so many people looking for their own satisfaction, creating ever more victims. And yet, following an escalating spiral of arson, kidnap and murder, an alliance between two very different young women provides a glimpse of a different path.

My latest (2021) novel is “Loving Country: An English Girl in Austin TX.” It’s a Romance, featuring lots of Country Music, fast cars, jealousy and false accounts. Oh, and a happy ending, because, round about now, I think we all deserve one.

If you compare that to “Blindsided” (2020), an international thriller, and “Satisfaction in Times of Anger" (2017), a UK-based crime story, you’ll see that I like to write in different genres.

As an author, I am intrigued by the way characters emerge to take control of what was just an idea and turn it into a story. I want readers to care about those characters, about what happens to them, and perhaps about an underlying issue, too. Those elements are common to all genres.

The background issue in “Loving Story” is where individuals see the borderline between caring for someone and controlling them. “Satisfaction in Times of Anger” asks how, when people hurt you, you can avoid simply being reduced to a victim. “Blindsided” wonders what lengths a character will go to, or not, in order to be the hero of their own story. Most important, of course, is to have a cracking tale that makes you care about what happens to the people in it.

Previously, I was involved in English language teacher education and personal/professional development. I see "Continuing Cooperative Development" (2002) and "The Reflexive Teacher Educator" (2011) as my main contributions to those fields. From now on, however, it's the truths of fiction that motivate me to keep writing. What happens just beyond what we know? I mean, out there where you can imagine yourself …

I read this in one sitting on a long haul flight. I couldn’t put it down. A definite page turner that makes you want to read to the end to find out what happens to the characters. Hopefully, this will be made into a movie with Idris Elba as Bent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous read

A terrific read. As well as being a pacy, well written and engrossing thriller ( actually it is more than just a 'thriller') it is also massively relevant in a period which has seen the murder of Jo Cox, the rise of the nationalistic Right ( fuelled by unscrupulous politicians anxious for Brexit) and the debate over our reaction to terrorism
The characters are well rounded, believable and draw us into their lives.

The dialogue moves along at a cracking speed and the plot never sags.

I look forward to a follow up involving Bent and Mason hopefully -there is much potential in their relationship.

Buy this book - you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

One can engage with this book in many ways: Read as a police novel, it is a fast-paced, thrilling and hard to put down. Read from a psychological perspective, it offers deep insights into how the various characters (victims, criminals and the police officers) experience anger, and the complex ways satisfaction and retribution relate to each other. Read as a social commentary, it is a powerful critique of contemporary Britain, as shaped by ethnic diversity and Brexit. However you choose to read the story, Edge narrates it in a way that is both perceptive and engaging. I very highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex and violence and a moral dilemma
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2017
A rattling good read, a real page turner which leaves the reader anxious to find out what happens next.

But it's much more than an enthralling police investigation into horrific sexual exploitation and far-right thuggery. The story presents us with challenging moral problems which compel us to question our notions of right and wrong. Is "Satisfaction" a cosy euphemism for revenge?

The two scenes of violence carried out by the detectives go well beyond any idea of proportionality or self-defence. There are two (probably four) killings; false evidence is produced to incriminate the chief paedophile while the perpetrator walks away uncharged

"Restorative justice" is one of the themes of the book but we have to ask ourselves whether the concept of extra-judicial "just deserts" ("They 'ad it cummin'" as Elli would no doubt say) is sufficient to warrant acts like those. The author, wisely, leaves it to us to find our answers.

A thought-provoking, troubling work that deserves every success.

A very good first novel: consistently interesting and thought-provoking. A real page-turner, but a lot more than just a thriller. I look forward to his next.
