Eyes On Books

It has been over a year since Kaori took the throne, and he and Hunter are at last ready to become married under Kazurian law. However, a brutal attack against Hunter just days before the wedding suggests that not all of Kazure is in favor of the alliance. Kaori goes on a desperate quest to save Hunter's life even as a new enemy arises, slaughtering the priests and priestesses inside the Summer Temple for unknown reasons. Finding a solution to these two mysteries will decide whether or not Hunter manages to survive, and if Kaori will be able to continue as the High Lord of Kazure at all.

Sacred Guardian series by J.A. Jaken

Imagine a world where magic is real, where ruling lords plot to overthrow the crown and a kingdom is left to flounder with a young and untried High Lord having recently been awarded the throne. Imagine a world of armored and sword-wielding soldiers, of stealthy assassins, of plots and betrayals, romance and mystery, of wars and battles both at home and abroad.

This is the kingdom of Kazure, where the threat of civil war between the various ruling factions looms ever present even as enemies press from outside the country's borders, threatening everything its people hold dear. High Lord Kaori Sansa has to find a way to overcome the trials facing both him and Kazure or else risk losing it all—his country, his life, and quite possibly his soul.

Genres: Fantasy, Adventure, M/M Romance

Will he be able to hold the kingdom together despite the odds that are stacked against it, and somehow unlock the buried powers of Shinja, the Sacred Beast of Kazure?

This series is (quite loosely) inspired by Japan, and I a sucker for anything Japanese. While this isn't my favorite m/m series (and I suspected the identity of one of the culprits from early on), it is still a decent read. It was cool to finally see some of Shinja's backstory. I do wish there had been more world-building, as there were some cool concepts I would have liked to have seen expanded, but I guess you only get so much world-building when the primary genre of the book is a romance.

The author noted that this is probably the end of Hunter and Kaori's story, as it left off in a good place. I agree with this, however I would love to see a story set in the future about Rin and Malo when they are older!

JA Jaken has created a wonderfully complex magical world here with some really cool Japanese vibes and characters. I’ve loved this whole series and love it how I’m still really into the main characters after 4 books of them! I highly recommend this series for all fans of m/m stories or fantasy.
