They were called the Human Marine Corps, but their cause was never humanity’s.

Until the Sleeper awoke…

A century ago, all but two members of Lance Scipio’s unit were executed for bringing dishonor to his regiment.

Now he is woken into a strange new time, and tasked with whipping into shape the worst squad of misfits in the entire Human Marine Corps.

THE PRICE OF FAILURE: DEATH!

2565AD. Tranquility-4 near the frontier of the White Knight Empire. Guided by mysterious orders, the authorities at the Human Marine Corps base of Beta City thaw Lance Scipio. In 2441, an entire Marine company was executed with the exception of Captain Grimgerde and Sergeant Lance Scipio, the usual punishment for running in the face of the enemy. But these two were preserved… as if the future required them.

Scipio is not expected to escape execution for long, but he has been given a slim chance. For a Marine, a chance can be all that’s needed to change the fate of worlds…

J.R. Handley is a pseudonym for a family writing team. He is a veteran infantry sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division and the 28th Infantry Division. His family is the kind of crazy that interprets his insanity into cogent English. He writes the sci-fi while they proofread it. The sergeant is a two-time combat veteran of the late unpleasantness in Mesopotamia where he was wounded, likely doing something stupid. He started writing military science fiction as part of a therapy program suggested by his doctor, and hopes to entertain you while he attempts to excise his demons through these creative endeavors. In addition to being just another dysfunctional veteran, he is a stay-at-home parent, avid reader and all-around nerd. Luckily for him, his family joins him in his fandom nerdalitry.

Just like real life, not everyone survives. There is a certain sense of realism that combat vets put into their writing. This book has it in spades. Everything just works well in an engrossing story that reminds you that real life chores can wait. A good book such as this one is a fantastic way to spend an evening, or a week and a half if you are a slower reader... We won't judge. Enough review, I want to read the next book. You should as well.

I was a bit skeptical that someone else was writing stories about a SciFi series that I enjoyed very much and felt loyal to. I was very pleasantly surprised how very well written it was and have continued reading the other books from JR Handley. I don't know if Tim C Taylor and JR Handley are the same person and I don't care the two series are very entertaining and enjoyable. I am happy to give this book and the series a 5 star rating.

I'm not a sci-fi fan so my review is probably off a bit. I get kind of confused by trying to picture the realities in the story. I'll try the next book to see if I have adjusted to the medium.

You get to be there as the Legion slowly comes to life in this gripping story! I admit that I love military SciFi, and this book really kept me excited to get back to it whenever I had to put it down. Feed the dogs? “Just one more page!” Get to bed? “One more chapter and I’ll close my eyes!” Get rolling in the morning? “Now THIS is why I’m getting up an hour early!” I can’t believe that I took so long to get this book. I’m going to Amazon right now to get the next one in this series... (Hahahahaha, my alarm just went off to feed the dogs. “2 more minutes, I promise. I’ve got to get a book first!”

I picked up the first book in the Sleeping Legion series on a recomndation from a friend and was pleasently surprised by the book. I enjoyed how well the Author managed to convey military life as well as what combat situations would be like in the future. Moreover, I greatly appreciated how he showed, not only the use of battlefield tactics, but how soldiers and leaders develop them. I couldn't put the book down and I am looking forward to cracking the second book.

This book is on a parallel time line with Human Legion. It follows the human legion universe but is created by a different author(s). This book is well written. The lead characters richly developed with many layers. I have yet to find an error, in editing so it’s hardly worth mentioning. I enjoyed every second of this book and eagerly await the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut Book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 29, 2016
Having read the 5 books in the Human Legion series and become aware that a spin-off series was to be written by another author I didn’t know what to expect. Further that this is the first book written by J.R. Handley, a veteran infantry sergeant of 101st airborne division injured during 2 tours in Iraq, as a therapy to combat the demons in his head. I was not expecting a first class story. How wrong could I have been! With his practical military training and experience on the ground, the action has a real feel to it. We have left behind the shoot up and wiz of the earlier space battles and got down close to realism. I did enjoy the reaction of Sgt Scipio to the announcement that there is a rebellion in progress. He concentrates on the safety of his cadets rather than obeying orders. The delightful inclusion of a cadet sergeant wearing frilly underwear for her 16th birthday is brilliant. The story of how Sgt Scipio tackled the role of bringing a very poor squad of cadets up to standard will bring back memories of our own military training to all veterans, it certainly made my memory jump back over 60 years. This is a thoroughly good story written by someone who knows what he is writing about.
