About the author

J.R. Handley is a pseudonym for a family writing team. He is a veteran infantry sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division and the 28th Infantry Division. His family is the kind of crazy that interprets his insanity into cogent English. He writes the sci-fi while they proofread it. The sergeant is a two-time combat veteran of the late unpleasantness in Mesopotamia where he was wounded, likely doing something stupid. He started writing military science fiction as part of a therapy program suggested by his doctor, and hopes to entertain you while he attempts to excise his demons through these creative endeavors. In addition to being just another dysfunctional veteran, he is a stay-at-home parent, avid reader and all-around nerd. Luckily for him, his family joins him in his fandom nerdalitry.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2017Gripping story and riveting characters. I couldn't put either of the books down and stayed up two nights reading both stories. A great addition to the Human Legion universe. There is lots of action and love the detailed character (human and nonhuman) motivations to make these stories a compelling read. Waiting (im)patiently for the next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017First, as a fellow vet, the writing therapy works. Been there, done that. Stay at it. It helps. 'Nuff said. I've got both novels but waited til finishing the 2nd before reviewing. Really dig the SciFi "grunt" perspective as killer, leadership aspects/complexities, heroes don't always find a way to survive regardless and the brotherhood of fellow warriors, regardless of stupidities like race, sex, etc., can be honorable. If only reality reflected the same. Yes, I noticed a few grammatical and spelling errors but frankly, keep writing 'em and I'll keep buying them. Keep the wife, too. She helps. Good stuff from a Ranger, I'm guessing. Finally, thanks for recognizing Tim for his initial contribution. He rocks.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020This is a brilliantly told story of hard working military men and women, fighting for what’s right against human and alien foes who have rampaged and run amok in their small piece of a much wider universe.
We get to keep an eye on key figures, as they prove their worth, time and again, leading to well earned promotions in rank. At first doubting themselves, they rise to embrace the chaos that seems to surround their new appointments.
Surrounded by well wishers as well as detractors, they feel that they must work harder to take what they feel is correct path for themselves and their units.
If you like solid, well thought out military Science Fiction, this is the place for you! Mr. Handley has the background and turn of mind, together with the sense of humor to keep you fully engaged.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2017A good read. Good pace and interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2017Its been quite a long time since a book has affected me the way this one did. As a former participant in the unpleasantness in Southeast Asia, 50 years ago, 50 frakkin' years? My head is STILL frakked and body is getting worse. It brought back memories that I am not sure I wanted brought back. Its amazing how things can hang around in your head that long but I cant remember my zip code sometimes. I'm sorry, I cant say much more without giving away parts of this wonderful book, but believe me sir, I know about your ghosts and demons.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2017Not bad reading. But I didn't find it compelling.
Interesting ideas but it needed some more twists to make really interesting and captivating

3.0 out of 5 stars Left wondering if I'll read the next book
Okay read with lots of well described action. Main problem I have with it is that I'm not sure if I'll read the next book after reading the overly melodramatic final chapter of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read the good stuff continues
It's still still a joy to come across an author who just seems to have written a book in the style and pace that draws you in keeps you so interested that you want to read more yet are sad as you get closer to the end of the book. I can't wait for the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars You have to run to keep up so pay attention
Great read. The authenticity of the writers own experience surfaces every so often which sets this trilogy apart from many 'space marines' operas. The milion mile stare stares back at you even on a different planet at a different time.
