About the author

J.R. Handley is a pseudonym for a family writing team. He is a veteran infantry sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division and the 28th Infantry Division. His family is the kind of crazy that interprets his insanity into cogent English. He writes the sci-fi while they proofread it. The sergeant is a two-time combat veteran of the late unpleasantness in Mesopotamia where he was wounded, likely doing something stupid. He started writing military science fiction as part of a therapy program suggested by his doctor, and hopes to entertain you while he attempts to excise his demons through these creative endeavors. In addition to being just another dysfunctional veteran, he is a stay-at-home parent, avid reader and all-around nerd. Luckily for him, his family joins him in his fandom nerdalitry.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2020Here’s a great Military Sci-Fi story by an author who loves to go deep into the mind of combat officers and personnel! You’ll find that in the future, the mostly elusive answer to a common grunt’s question (“Why are we doing this” or “... doing it this way?”) is because many Officers are only watching out for themselves, looking forward to the next leg up. In this story, it’s true except for a very few officers, who’s nature and training won’t let them put off taking care of their responsibility to the crew that they are assigned to protect. You will love going into the minds of those officers.
Delving into the thinking of various people on both sides of these battles, to me, is like watching a great Olympic sports event. Not only are points awarded for specifics tactics, (such as using time outs to your advantage, or placing players in an unusual spot that you’ve practiced, unknown to the opposing side), but the game is awarded to the team who uses the most effective tactics.
To me, it’s refreshing to go into the Strategy (End Game) and Tactics (different methods of fulfilling the Strategy) of every story, and how this is to be accomplished by both sides. I was very happy to do a “ride along” with these characters.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2017I've come to expect fast paced sci-fi/space marine action from this series, this book turned the action up a notch. My two biggest gripes with the last book were that the main character (Lance) disappeared and there was A LOT of planning. This book jumped back in time to follow Lance, my fav character, and gave me a TON of action. At first I was confused about the time jumping backwards, but the author did a good job of weaving the two timelines together. Great and fast read, I'm ready for the next.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2018Man, give me a minute to collect my thoughts. Read this book in 2 days! This is the best book oh the Series yet. Non-stop action from the very beginning! You won't want to put this book down! If you're like me, if you haven't started from the beginning of the Series, I suggest you do, but starting anywhere is better than not starting at all. You're crazy if you don't rate this one a 5 stars....
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2017Coulda been a 4. Author uses a common Military Historical approach, technique in this story -- think S.L.A. Marshal, Nolan, Hammel (many, many more) and Pork Chop Hill, Hue, Khe Sahn. I'm good w that but technique works better if you take a little time developing the other characters before using their POV and killing them off within a small chapter.
I have to admit being lost at times. Slang was used and I had no idea what it meant, referred to. I guess you have to read all 7(?) Human Legion books to get it. I looked on web site but no answers there.
I think some sort of synopsis, explanation -- cleverly done or just plain spit it out -- in beginning would be extremely helpful. I don't know where this series falls in from timeline + in respect to other series and revolt.
Last, TO&E ? I think I read twice where squad is 40 or so? USMC has 13, Army 11 in squad with 2,3 fire tms respectively. The buzz words are there but flesh it out some. Fire Tm, squad, platoon, etc. I'm aware of only 2 infantry weapons -- SR 71(?) n mini cannon. Oh, n grenade launcher of sorts n some kind of artillery. I admit that I am semi fanatical w minutia, nuances of TO and weapons -- who has what, where and how many and distance and effects.
When authors make sense w TO&E, adds credibility, realism from just another RPG gamer to someone who at least does the research.
I know author is vet from my online search, so I know he can do in sleep. Other author who 'owns' universe -- don't recall anything that he's a vet but that's ok as long as you take time n trouble to understand what you're writing about and not on an Xbox or Saving Private Ryan. Between that and Platoon, everybody is an expert of nothing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2017A nice story but a little to slow in places but I still would recommend this book and series to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Action Packed Gem
This book has everything to keep the reader awake and desperate for the next chapter. It is packed with more action than sardines in a can. It is very well written in a way to satisfy the reader who just wants lots of battles but also to the discerning types who love to study the strategy. Every page had me on a knife edge. It has successes, failures, spies, traitors, rebellion, heroes, even the re-use of prisoners. Unfortunately for me my favourite character was killed in action. When I served in the armed forces, I was only aware of the action taking place in front of me, I didn’t know what was happening beyond a hundred metres on either side. Like many of us at the sharp end we knew nothing about the planning and strategy that controlled the action. Here the author builds up the campaign in steps from all angles so we can anticipate the problems if say the air-cover arrives late or two armies fail to meet up where and when expected. I found it a bit difficult to comprehend the whole scenario so I took to drawing maps and moving toy soldiers over the battlefield. This led me to wonder if the author could publish large-scale maps of Tranquillity on boards, or even build a war-game based on the Human Legion exploits.
A thoroughly enjoyable book, worth every cent and I would award it more than 5 * if I could. Well done JR Hartley!

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep the books coming
A great read takes you in to the heart of battle. One thing I would like to know given the Times and technology of the book why so many frontal assaults. Still I have enjoyed the series and look forward to reading the next chapter

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant novel
Right from the first pages JR Handley, who is from a military background, places you straight into the action. This is a fast paced novel with realistic battlefield scenarios and very strong lead male and female characters. The authors personal experience mixed with obvious meticulous research and whit make this a must read novel. If you haven't read this series yet then I urge you to start, military sci fi at its very best.
